Mid Canterbury’s school<br />

communities, scouting<br />

groups, organisationsand<br />

businesses may have got<br />

behindthe collection of<br />

bread tags to raise money<br />

for wheelchairsin South<br />

Africa,but so too have<br />

pupils from Fox Glacier<br />

School.<br />

Abag of bread tags<br />

(weighing around 2kg) from<br />

the school,atthe southern<br />

endofthe West Coast, was<br />

dropped into the <strong>Courier</strong><br />

office this week.<br />

The pupils,and their<br />

schoolcommunity, had<br />

been savingthe bread tags<br />

for the past six months for<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> ecowarrior<br />

Nicci Glanville.<br />

Mrs Glanville, amother<br />

of six,who is also aKea<br />

leader and abusiness<br />

woman, is collecting the<br />

district’s bread tags, andis<br />

alsogetting bread tags from<br />

all of the South Island’s<br />

collection points.<br />

The <strong>Courier</strong> office is a<br />

collection point.<br />

The recycling of the<br />

plastic pieces is part of a<br />

global recycling effort,<br />

which was setupinNew<br />

Zealand last yeartocollect<br />

anything that looks likea<br />

bread tag ­whetherits on<br />

fruit, or potatoes ­can be<br />

recycled.<br />

polystyrenehasagood<br />

recycling value in South<br />

Africa; 200kg ­or200bread<br />

bags full of tags ­isneeded<br />

to buy one wheelchair.<br />

boxes, which once filled,<br />

are collected by the<br />

national co­ordinator of<br />

Bread Tags for<br />

WheelchairsNZ.<br />

Visas extended<br />

DairyNZ and FederatedFarmers are<br />

pleased the government has announced it is<br />

extending employer assisted temporary work<br />

visas duetoexpire by the end of <strong>2020</strong>.<br />

DairyNZ people teamleader Jane Muir<br />

said thesix month extension was excellent<br />

news for farmers and the estimated 3000<br />

dairy farm employees on temporaryvisas<br />

thatweredue to expire.<br />

Now wasabusy time andthe certainty was<br />

welcomed by thedairy sector.<br />
