THE NEXT 12 MONTHS are going to be massive for<br />

surf lifesaving in New Zealand and beyond.<br />

With the world championships on our doorstep in<br />

Adelaide next year, a lot of the progress our athletes<br />

can make on the beach or in the pool this summer will<br />

define how well we do at the worlds.<br />

It all starts now. We’ve got teams going to the German<br />

Cup pool competition and also a couple of beach<br />

carnivals in Australia.<br />

The German Cup is the strongest pool competition<br />

outside of worlds, if not a little bit stronger because of<br />

the athlete depth.<br />

It’s a long way to go to Europe but we just can’t<br />

replicate that sort of competition in the Southern<br />

Hemisphere – from that perspective, the value of<br />

the German Cup is just massive and it’s also a great<br />

opportunity to test our athletes in an international<br />

environment.<br />

That’s also the case for our 12 athletes heading to<br />

Australia. We would normally have sent a team to<br />

the Sanyo Bussan competition in Japan but it was<br />

cancelled this year because of the Japanese tsunami.<br />

When we looked around, there were a few options<br />

available to us. With a bit more research, the Coffs<br />

Harbour carnival turned out to be just craft racing<br />

which a lot of the Queensland clubs go to.<br />

It also coincides with one of the rounds of the Fastest<br />

Man on Sand series up in Redcliffe so eight athletes<br />

will compete on both Saturday and Sunday in Coffs<br />

Harbour, while four will do the first day at Coffs Harbour<br />

and then head to the Fastest Man on Sand carnival on<br />

the Sunday.<br />

From an exposure point of view, the likes of beach<br />

sprinters Kodi Harman, Chanel Hickman and Paul<br />

Cracroft-Wilson will get a lot of benefit out of it.
