Oxford men’sshed set to expand By DAVID HILL TheOxford’s men’s shed is readytoexpand. The OxfordOhoka Community Board recently backedplans for the McIver’s OxfordCommunityMen’s Shed to build a10metre extensionon itsbuildingatthePearson Park oval. Men’sshedchairman Raymon Charlessaystheextension will create ametalworkshop. ‘‘Thebuildingconsent is going through at the moment. It will complement the existing shop, which is for woodwork and a little bit of metal.’’ The project is expected to cost $25,000 to $30,000, withthe men’s shedhaving raised onethirdofthe cost already. It will nowseekacommunity grant. To boost itscoffers, asales area hasbeenestablished at the shed where the volunteerssell their wares, and therewillbea men’s shed stallbackatthe Oxford Farmers’Marketin the warmer spring weather. Last year, the men’s shed made abatterypowered toy which was raffled off just before Christmas, and asimilar project is in the pipeline this year,Mr Charlessays. Sale itemsincludechopping boards, trays and birdfeeders, which have been made by shed members and make ideal gifts. The men’s shed has more than 40 members and regularly works on communityprojects, including making picnic tables. The shed is open on Tuesdays ❛The evenings are popular, but we find the older chaps struggle with the cold nights in the winter.❜ —Raymon Charles from 7pm to 9pm, Thursdays from 10am to 12pm and 7pm to 9pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. The Tuesday evening session is open to women and the evening and Saturday sessions tend to be the most popular, as severalmembers work during the day, MrCharlessays. ‘‘We aretoyingwiththe ideaof openingwithanother daytime session during the week. ‘‘The evenings are popular, but we find the older chaps struggle with the coldnights in the winter.’’ Mr Charles says the strength of the men’sshedsissupporting oldermen who may otherwise becomeisolated in their retirementyears. ‘‘Youcomealong and start a project and talk it through and go through theprocess. PHOTO: SUPPLIED OXFORD &CUST North Canterbury News, July 30, 2020 17 Telescope due soon The OxfordArea School Observatory’s view of the cosmos is about to get bigger. Anew computerised 12inch telescope has been ordered to complement the existing 10inch telescope. The observatory’s volunteers can’t wait. VolunteerErik Vermaat says the new telescope will give the observatory more flexibility as well as aclearer view of the heavens. ‘‘We’ve alwaysbeen thinking about a16inchtelescope,but we’vehad to revise our funding expectations. But the 12inch has very good optics and it’s computerised, so it will be much easier to point the telescope. ‘‘We will have it soon, which is fantastic news as the whole team will be able to operateitand we’re not just dependent on one person.’’ While the observatory had alate start to the seasonbecause of the lockdown, it has held two successful open nights so far, with others planned for August14and September 18. Anew booking system has been introduced this year, with two onehoursessions at 7pm and 8pm offered each open night, with numbers limited to 15 asession. Night classes are also resuming next week.
