Weedkiller
stance
By SHELLEY TOPP
Apublic backlash has forced the
Christchurch CityCouncil to scrap plans
to reintroduce glyphosate use, but the
Waimakariri DistrictCouncilsays the
herbicide,commonly known as
Roundup,can be usedsafely.
‘‘When used correctly we haveno
concernsabout using it,’’ the council’s
GreenSpace manager GrantMacLeod
says.‘‘Wemake surethat in Waimakariri
we use Roundup in the safest way we
can, follow the manufacturer’s
guidelines for its use, aswell as requiring
contractorstouse PPE (personal
protectiveequipment) and puttingup
signage saying spraying is occurring
when it is in use.’’
The GreenSpace team also uses weed
eaters and handpicking methods. ‘‘We
only use Roundup in areaswherewe
have to, andtry and reduce use by applying
mulchtoshrub bedstosuppress
weeds. It is mostly used aroundhard surfacessuch
as footpathsand pathways.’’
Kaiapoi Community Board
chairwoman Chris Greengrass recalls
the concerns raised in 2016over council
use of glyphosate to control weeds near
the KaiapoiRiver and other waterways.
‘‘Theboard,onawhole, did not support
the use of chemical weed control.
‘‘I don’t recall thistopicbeing brought
to the tableagain for the board’s
consideration but in my opinion, and
because of casual conversationswith
members of the community, most are
concerned aboutthe wellbeing of both
people and wildlife. In saying that, Ido
believe council staff are very responsible
and have high expectations from contractorsthat
they willtake utmost care.’’
