Ashley stays in semi-final hunt

Ashley keptits hopes of asemi­final berth
aliveafteraspirited 26­19 winagainst
Hurunui in the latest round of North
Canterbury rugbylastSaturday.
The game, played at Ashley’s impressive
home ground, liveduptoits billing, with
both sides playingpositive rugby.
Ashley scored first in the opening
quarter and never relinquishedthe lead.
However, Hurunui stayed in contention
throughoutand was stillinwinning
contention in the finalquarter.
Ashley lostakey figure in halfback
BrentCameronwith an injury in the
opening exchanges. His replacement,
Luke Gold, did not let the side down.
Afterasustained early attack,Naaria
Wilson­Bairds crashed over in awall of
jerseys to score Ashley’s firsttry.
ScottBarberstretched this to 12­0 after
13 minutes, following ablindsidemove.
Hurunui got itselfinto the game in the
second quarter and, after aswarm of
attacks,Luke Shanks finally scored.
Perhaps the outcome was sealed in
Ashley’s favour in the opening momentsof
the second half whenKorbynGray seized
an intercept while Hurunuiwas hot on
attack. Gray backed himself for 75 metres
and, after convertinghis own try, Ashley
had extendedits leadto19­5.
Hurunui immediately returned to attack
and Simon Northcote evaded many
tacklersfrom 30 metres outtoscore.
The seesaw nature of the gamecontinued
and Ashley thenscored its thirdtry
afteraseries of mauls on the Hurunui line,
before Hurunui again returned in kind.
Hurunui did mostofthe attacking in the
finalexchanges, but asolid Ashleydefence
held firm to protect its seven­point
advantage.

Oxford victorious
In perfect conditions at Mandeville,
Oxford had to work hardtogain the upper
hand over atenacious Ohoka side.
Afterleading 26­20 at half­time,Oxford
came away in the secondspelltoregister
a34­25 victory thatcatapultsitinto third
on the points table. It securesthe side a
placeinthe semi­finals.

that he was there to play, with asuperb

apenalty goal to put Ohoka ahead 10­0.
It was not until the 15th minute that
Oxford workedits way on to attackand,
after asustained build­up,fullback Angus
Mitchelldived over for atry. Three
minutes later, halfbackMattRoberts, who
had an impressive all­roundgame,crossed
for the first of his two first­half tries.
As half­time approached,McCallum
scored an opportunist try which he
converted for Ohokatoregain the lead,but
it was short­lived as Mako Prescott
immediately scored for Oxford.
Bothteams tightenedtheirdefensive
workinthe secondhalf, limitingeach
side’s scoring to one try each.
NickInch scored for Oxford while
Taylor capped an industriouseffortfor
Ohoka by scoring his secondtry.
Oxford’s loose forward trio of Stew
Dalzell,who always seemed to be on hand
to make the vital tackle, Danny Brooker
and Logan Telfer got through apower of
workand kept their team going forward.
Oxford’s backs alsoperformed
honourably. It is ayoungbackline, but they
showed they had improvedconsiderably
on their form from earlier in the season.
Anotherwin
Glenmark­Cheviot’s unbeaten run since
May 2018 continued when it comfortably
accounted for an injury­dogged Saracens
unit37­21. The win alsonotchedupa
record defence of the DeansShield for the
combined side.
Saracens’ fortunes were dealt aseries of
blows before kick­off, withcaptain Josh
Maynardruledout with abrokenfinger
and Mark Smithand Pete Manahe pulling
out before the start.
Saracens drew first blood whenNathan
Goodwin controlled acharge­down and
scored. Glenmarkthen settled intoits
efficientand clinical execution of the
simple things and before half timethe side
had scoredthreetriesand led 18­7.
Saracens fought back in the second half
with two MarkSmith pushover tries, but
any hopes of awin wereextinguished
when Glenmark scored again.
WhileGlenmark is assured of ahome
semi­final, Saracens face afinal round
must­win match against third­placed
Oxford, or rely on Ohoka to beatAshley.

Kaiapoi shines
Kaiapoi kept its spot at the top of the
tablewhen it outclassed Woodend 61­10.
Woodend went into half­timewith
considerable enthusiasmafter postinga
try and apenalty, but Kaiapoi effectively
extinguished anyhope in the secondhalf.
The boot of Lance Taylor,who kicked
eightofnine conversion attempts, assisted
the Kaiapoi try­scoring effort.
