Göteborg is situated in the heart of Scandinavia, between the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian
capitals. The strategic location makes Göteborg a true gateway to Scandinavia.
Brief History
Trade, shipping and international contacts have characterised Göteborg ever since it was founded
in 16 1. In 1731, the Swedish East India Company began trading with the East. In the 19th century,
Göteborg became industrialised, largely thanks to the arrival of Scottish and English businessmen.
Modern-day Göteborg with its stone-built buildings, wide boulevards and parks was built towards
the end of the 19th century. The shipyards grew large in the 0th century, but declined at the end
of the 1970’s and are now transformed into residential areas and offices for people to enjoy the
harbour atmosphere.
The Friendly City
Sweden enjoys a stable political, economic and social environment. Göteborg is a friendly city with
an open and hospitable atmosphere. Experiences of large international events have given the police
the know-how required to work professionally with security issues. Environmental thinking is a
key concept for local authorities, trade and industry in order to keep the archipelago unspoilt and
to ensure the region remains one of the most popular summer resorts in the country. Adding to the
feeling of security is also the fact that the general population speaks English, so visitors can rely on
being understood in most situations.

Göteborg is a big city, with a large business community, universities, culture, sports and events.
However, there is a small-town atmosphere with a unique cooperation and joint vision between
politicians, the business community and the universities. This is known as the “Spirit of Göteborg”.
The decision-making process is easy and agreements can be reached without any great difficulties
– a feature of great importance, especially when it comes to arranging large-scale events.
Visibility and Forum for Informal Networking
A congress in Göteborg enjoys high visibility. Since the city centre is compact and the Göteborg
Convention Centre is located close by hotels, restaurants and shops, the majority of the delegates
stay within a relatively small area of the city. This also means that the meeting is extended to the city
in a pleasant way and the delegates meet spontaneously and naturally in the streets at restaurants
and cafés.

Göteborg is the hometown of world-famous companies such as AstraZeneca, Volvo, Hasselblad
cameras, SKF ball bearings, Ericsson Microwave Systems and Nobel Biocare. The telecommunications
network in the Göteborg region is one of the most sophisticated in the world. Many foreign
companies base their Nordic operations in Göteborg. Some 500 foreign companies operating on
the international market are represented here. Being the home of the University of Gothenburg,
Chalmers University of Technology and the IT Faculty of Göteborg makes Göteborg the largest
university city in Sweden with a total of 61,000 students.
