winter and knew he was lurking in
the bushes somewhere," she said. "I
remember it was kind of nerve-wracking
knowing there was so much pressure in
not wanting to disappoint anyone.
"Obviously I was disappointed, but
when it was over, it was over. Barbara
played really well that day, she was
phenomenal. It seemed like on the
back nine, she seemed to get all the
right bounces. We all joked that she'd
hit it over here, and then it would
bounce magically over there."

Hurton, who lost in the quarterfinals
to Cronin, said she remembered
how hard it was for Brophy going up
against Thorner on her home course.
"I felt sorry for Paula as it seemed
as though everyone was rooting for
Barbara and she was considered the
underdog even though it was her
home course," said Hurton. "It was a
great match. Honestly, I don't think
many people gave Barbara a chance,
but in the end, she earned it."
Brophy had the last word.
"It was a Cinderella story and it's
just incredible to think it was 50
years ago."
