Electoral
process
review
under way

THE FIRST meeting to begin
the review of the district
council’s electoral process ahead
of the next local body election
was held last week.
The next district council
election will take place in 2022.
All councils must undertake a
review every six years.
“The purpose of the meeting
is for subcommittee members
to gain further understanding
of the process that council is
statutorily bound to follow in a
representation review process,”
chief executive David Ward said
in a report.
A meeting schedule for the
subcommittee going forward
will now be prepared.
The aim of the review is to
consider matters such as the
electoral system and whether to
use first past the post or single
transferable vote and effective
representation of all people in
the district.
A potential change in the
electoral system could be made
under the review.
Treatment plant upgrades
will improve water quality
FOUR WATER treatment
plants have been upgraded
as part of a wider project to
improve the district’s water
systems.
Upgrades have been completed
on treatment plants at Rakaia
Huts, Tai Tapu, Claremont,
Veuve Drive in Lincoln and
Gallipoli St in Leeston adding
treatment options such as ultra
violet light.
UV treatment is an effective
method of disinfecting bacteria
and is widely used around the
world.
The UV rays attack the
genetic code of harmful
pathogens rendering them
unable to reproduce.
As well as improving water
quality, the plants will also
provide additional storage as the
district’s population grows.
The work is part of a $23 million
district-wide programme of
59 projects to build and upgrade
pump stations and water treatment
plants, to increase capacity
and improve water quality and
safety.
Work is also under way
on treatment plant upgrades
at Arthur’s Pass, Castle Hill,
Dalethorpe, Springston, West
Melton and Te Pirita.

plant has been
completed.
A further seven upgrades are
planned over the next two years
in Kirwee, Lincoln, Hororata,
Darfield, Prebbleton, Springfield
and Taumutu.
District council group

Washington said it is a part
of a significant long-term
commitment to keep improving
the service to keep up with
growth and health requirements.
“Clean, safe drinking water
is an essential service and we’re
committed to providing the best
service possible to make sure
that people have access to a safe
and sufficient supply.”
Drive-in
movie night
at Ellesmere
College
THE ELLESMERE College
student council is planning a
drive-in movie night at the
school to raise money for future
activities.
The event in September will be
Disney movie Up playing first for
the younger audience followed by
a screening of Grease.
Said student council member
Margarida Diaz: “The movies
will be projected on to a large
screen set up on a truck, and
audio will be heard on your car
radio through a supplied radio
frequency.
“Food and drink will be
available for purchase.”
Spaces for stalls to be set up will
be available.
The cost per car for one or
both movies is $35 and tickets
can be purchased through
