and we are celebrating all of the ways
a Library card can work for you

A Note from the Director
September is Library Card Month, and with all the change and chaos in the world right now,
we hope you feel your Burbank Public Library card is one thing you can count on. As we
continue to establish the new normal of service in a COVID world, your Library card can
provide an escape, an avenue toward a new future, a support for the school year, and a
source for entertainment.

Library cards give you access to a physical collection of almost half a million items, from
books to DVDs to music CDs. While we await word from public health officials as to our
ability to restore in-person use of the Library and browsing, many of you are taking advantage of our curbside pickup
service. Use of that service doubled from its launch in June to July and increased further in August.
Recognizing that people are still being cautious about outings or may not find print books convenient, we have been
working to expand our eBook and online offerings over the summer. Your Library card gives you access to an
ever-increasing collection of hundreds of thousands of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, and streaming music,
movies and TV shows. There’s no time like the present to watch that show you never had time for or study a language
for that dream trip you’re planning for when life gets back to normal.
One of the Library’s core roles is to level the playing field and provide access and opportunity to all, regardless of formal
education or life status. Your Library card can help you achieve your goals as you work through an online course, take a
practice test, brush up your resume or work with a tutor. All of these resources and more are freely available at
burbanklibrary.org. And if you need help, don’t hesitate to ask – staff are available by phone to guide you to the reading,
viewing or study material that’s just right for you.

TEENS Online Book Talk
Come talk about what you’ve read recently, and what you’re excited to read!
We want to hear about books, comic books, movies, TV shows,
and anything else you’re interested in.
Middle School

Burbank Book Club
Our online book club was formed to connect to the reading community. Over 80 people have joined
and it’s not too late for you to join int. Log into hoopla and download a copy to start reading.
On September 5 we will meet on Zoom to discuss The Stranger Diaries by Elly Griffiths, winner of the
Edgar Award for Best Novel.
Next, we will begin reading The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas, as part of our
one-city one-book program. We will host a book discussion on October 17.

Our one-city one-book program, Burbank Reads, is
returning in October 2020!
This program brings the community together reading and
discussing the same book, with supporting programs,

and government offices, or request one from your county elections office
• To receive a voter registration application by mail from the Secretary of
State, call the toll-free Voter Hotline at (800) 345-VOTE (8683).

State ballot measures and the Presidential election are covered
in the 16-page Easy Voter Guide offering unbiased, easy-to-read
ballot measure and election information. Easy Voter Guides will

School Help from the Library
As the new school year begins, our goal is to help kids and teens succeed
in school despite the challenges that demand so much of them and their
parents. With that in mind, our Library staff have been working hard to
find new and creative solutions to support our families during this time.
Highlighted in this newsletter are the programs and resources we have
recently launched to provide that extra help.
• BConnectED program has been expanded to include all BUSD
students, giving them access to our many online resources with
their student ID numbers.
• Online homework help is available through our website via
HelpNow, which allows students to connect with tutors virtually
for extra help every day of the week.
• We also have new online programming aimed to support reading,
learning, and socializing for kids of all ages.
All of this information can feel overwhelming and we welcome any
questions you might have. Please don’t hesitate to call, email, or reach
out to us on social media! We will be more than happy to guide you
through or further explain any of our services.
The Library hasn’t been the same since the pandemic hit. We all miss
the in-person interaction. However, even in this difficult time our staff is
here, energized and ready, to help you and your loved ones take on the
challenges of this situation until we can all be together again!

Free Library Access for All BUSD Students
Through our BConnectED program, all BUSD middle and high school students
can use their student ID numbers to login to the Burbank Public Library.
The program is expanding this year to include all elementary students who will be issued
BConnectED Library cards that will be made available through their schools.

Tutors are available every day from 1-10 pm
HelpNow (powered by Brainfuse) is a FREE
all-in-one suite of tutoring services designed
for a wide range of academic needs whether
it’s tackling a tough homework problem,
mastering a particular topic, or writing a paper.
• HelpNow services include expert academic
tutoring and self-study tools to empower
users to study at their own pace or
collaborate with peers and teachers
• Students access live, on-demand academic
help and state-aligned skills building
lessons from expert tutors
• With HelpNow, tutors and students
communicate in real time in our online
classroom by typing, drawing, and
marking-up lessons and web content
• Plus, students can use our secure file
sharing feature in the writing lab to submit
writing assignments to our writing tutors
any time of the day
• The full-service test center offers practice
tests for all levels in math, reading, and
writing as well as college preparatory tests.
