When my commander was promoted to captain,
he continued his lunchtime ritual of returning
to our office to do crossword puzzles with
his former staff. I started to notice that my new
commander and his captain would allow me not
only to take an hour for lunch, they allowed me
an additional hour to participate in the office
puzzle session. Of course, if some task arose
that needed immediate attention, Iʼd stop playing
and get back to work. The commanding officer
(captain) let me have my free time, and I
got several promotions. (In the military a promotion
is also a pay raise.)
Fred Blackbum rewarded my productivity with
an offer to form a partnership, with me as managing
partner. In contrast, my employer at the
months later. After six months, I had learned all
the shortcuts – all the editing tools and backup
systems that the computerʼs software was designed
to give me. My assistant, Charlene, did
a lot of backspacing and retyping. So I had
more free time.
