BACKYARD CRITTERS<br />

Inconspicuous pasture fly<br />
THE BLACK pasture<br />
fly (Hydrellia tritici) is<br />
an inconspicuous little<br />
fly only 2-3mm in<br />
length.<br />
Its eyes are purple<br />
and the body is blackish<br />
with a metallic lustre. It<br />
has distinctive yellow to<br />
cream-coloured halteres<br />
– a pair of dumbbell-like<br />
appendages that the hind<br />
wings of flies have evolved<br />
into.<br />
Hydrellia tritici was<br />
originally described<br />
from Australia where<br />
it is widespread in the<br />
south-eastern region. It<br />
is now found throughout<br />
New Zealand and can be<br />
observed all year, but most<br />
