Watson achieves world record
Arable farmer Eric Watson from
Ashburton produced a new Guinness
World Record in February this year for
the highest wheat yield of 17.398 tonnes
per hectare.
Eric already held the record since 2017
with 16.791 tonnes per hectare/ha.
“Beating my previous record by almost
600kg/ha exceeded even my highest
hopes. It was great being able to achieve
another incredible result,” he says.
“While we were thrilled with the record
result in 2017, we saw ways in which we
could make improvements and achieve an
even higher yield.”
Key contributors to the increased
yield were switching to liquid nitrogen,
using new cultivars and continuing to
monitor plant health closely.
“The Guinness World Record is
recognition of our hard work, the
assistance given by David Weith of
Bayer Crop Science and Paul Johnston
of Yara,” says Eric.
Canterbury arable farms have had
considerable success growing wheat
in the region. The reasons include a
moderate climate and good soils, along
with irrigation.
“We also have very good farmers.”
Canterbury’s climate, particularly in
coastal areas where his farm is located,
does not get too hot and dewy nights
means the crop can recover if it is hot.
Eric’s world record
wheat crop was
planted in April 2019
and harvested on 17
February 2020, the
wheat variety is Kerrin,
bred by KWS and
supplied by Carrfields
Grain & Seed.
On average, irrigated
wheat yields in New
Zealand produce around
12t/ha, demonstrating
how remarkable the
new record is – an
achievement providing
insights into innovations
for future growth.
Watson, who previously
farmed a mixed sheep
and crop farm at Ealing,
moved to the solely
cropping farm on the
good soils of Wakanui 27
years ago.
“It’s all about attention
to detail, and getting
things done at the right
time.”
