Selwyn Times Wednesday September 2 2020 4 NEWS MORE THAN a hundred Selwyn community members have been recognised for their selfless acts of kindness and professionalism during the Covid-19 lockdown. A special ceremony was held at the district council chambers to recognise those who received awards through the council-organised ‘Selwyn’s Covid Heroes’ campaign. The district council teamed up with Te Taumutu Rūnanga and the Selwyn Times to launch the campaign in June, inviting the public to nominate their Covid heroes in response to the overwhelming number of stories about individuals, companies, charities and essential service workers going the extra mile to help their local communities. Said Mayor Sam Broughton: “It was important for us to recognise the amazing work in our communities. The people of Selwyn really had each other’s back. At the same time we wanted to give people the chance to say a public thank you to the person, shop, school or organisation that made a difference for them.” Broughton, Te Taumutu chairperson Liz Brown, and Selwyn Times editor Barry Clarke presented certificates to five notable nominations. Each of the hundred nominated people and organisations will all receive an identical certificate by post. “I wish it would have been possible to give each and every person their certificates personally,” Broughton said. Rachael Inch, from the Selwyn Creative Network, who received her certificate from Broughton was nominated for her community service. “Often when we volunteer we do it without recognition or thanks so to be recognised like this is humbling,” she said. Rachael Inch was the coordinator of information for the Malvern Response Covid-19 group. Using her IT skills, she documented information and lists of volunteers and vulnerable residents in the Malvern area. Jane Potts is a St John volunteer ambulance officer. Police and fire crews from Rolleston were called to the incident at the intersection of Bethels and Corbetts Rds in Springston about 11.35am on Saturday. Rolleston chief fire officer Cam Kenyon said the crash involved a milk tanker and a car. He said a woman was trapped in the car and had to be extricated. Cam Kenyon “All I can see is, the car must have come out of the road and got taken on the right hand corner. That is where the damage is.” A St John spokesman said the woman suffered serious injuries and was transported to Christchurch Hospital. The crash comes after a fatal three-car crash at a Prebbleton intersection on August 18. DANGER: A recent crash at the Ellesmere/Tancreds Rds intersection highlights the need for drivers to be aware. PHOTO: BARRY CLARKE The motorist who died was 90-year-old Zelma Estelle Waghorn, of Little Akaloa. The crash happened at the intersection of Birchs Rd and Robinsons Rd, at about 3.40pm. Two others had serious injuries and all three people were taken to Christchurch Hospital. Senior Sergeant Dean Harker said the Bethels and Corbetts Rds intersection is uncontrolled, meaning there are no signs. “Obviously someone has still failed to give way at that intersection but it is not a situation of them failing to stop at a stop sign.” Harker said there will be an investigation into exactly what happened. Earlier this year, police began a campaign to make the district’s intersections safer following two other fatal crashes at intersections. About 150 drivers were fined for failing to stop throughout the two-month long campaign.
