YOUR ROUTE TO SUCCESS

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE

RIGHT COURSE FOR ME?

We often get asked this question by students who are unsure which course to take. We understand

it can be daunting deciding what course to do after finishing school, but there’s plenty of advice

available from careers advisers in school and college, tutors, and your parents/carers. Have a look at

these tips for picking the right course for you:

DO WHAT

YOU LOVE

You need to be passionate about the course you are going

to take - you will be dedicating the next few years of your life

to it so it needs to be something you enjoy.

What subjects do you enjoy doing at school?

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy in your spare time?

Could any of these interests point you towards a

particular course?

LOOK TO

THE FUTURE

Have you thought about what career you would like to follow

in the future? If so, there may be courses which will open

doors into the career you want.

If you are thinking about university, you can check the entry

requirements for degree courses using the search facility at

www.ucas.com

Be careful: if you find you are going to need a subject you

do not enjoy, you may need to reconsider your ambition!

WHAT IS YOUR

LEARNING STYLE?

Do you enjoy working in a classroom setting? Perhaps you

prefer a practical, hands-on course?

Look closely at how you will study a course and how it is

assessed. For instance, are there any exams to complete?

Do you need to submit coursework or essays? Or is the

course assessed through observations and practical work?

EXPLORE

YOUR OPTIONS

The college offers a wide range of vocational courses which

provide an excellent route to employment, as well as university.

We are also the largest local provider of apprenticeships,

with apprenticeships in a wide range of subjects.

The college website also has lots of resources available

for you to search by career options. You can also access

support from our college Careers Advisers Service before

you join us.

Give our Learner Services Team a call to book an

appointment.

APPRENTICESHIPS

APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships allow you to work and study at the same time. You will combine practical training in

your workplace with studying at college so that you can earn while you learn.

We like to call it ‘the best of both worlds!’

Why study an apprenticeship with us?

• We have a dedicated matching service, so will help to match your skills to a suitable vacancy with an employer

• Our experienced team will work with you and guide you through your apprenticeship

• More than 90% of our apprentices continue in employment or receive a promotion following their apprenticeship completion

• We will monitor your progress and keep in close contact with you and your employer.

Apprenticeship levels

No matter what level of apprenticeship you are on, you will receive

both ‘on the job’ and ‘off the job’ training from your employer.

On the job training refers to what you will learn when completing

practical tasks. Off the job training refers to training you will receive

outside of your usual tasks, such as coaching and mentoring,

work shadowing, online learning, and completing project work.

Apprenticeships lead to industry recognised standards or

qualifications. Some apprenticeships require an assessment

at the end of the programme to assess your ability and

competence in the job role.

Apprenticeship entry requirements

Entry requirements vary depending on your apprenticeship level. It is certainly advantageous to have a minimum of grade 4

in English and Maths, although in most cases this is not essential. If you have not already achieved a grade 4 in English and

Maths, you will need to study towards these as part of your apprenticeship. In some courses, you will have to achieve a certain

level of English and Maths to be able to complete your apprenticeship. A number of courses also require you to study ICT if you

have not previously achieved a grade 4 or above.

It is not essential to have had previous work experience, although this is definitely beneficial and could boost your chances

of securing an apprenticeship.

Please speak to our Learner Services or Apprenticeship Team to find out about the entry requirements for individual

apprenticeships.

“Vocational qualifications aren’t as good as A Levels.”

Level 3 vocational qualifications are equivalent to A Levels. Distinction* is equal to A* at A Level.

“Vocational qualifications are easier than A Levels.”

Vocational qualifications are not an ‘easy’ option, you will need to be just as organised and

committed. To secure a great work placement, students need to demonstrate their work ethic

and show a willingness to learn.

“I cannot apply to university with a vocational qualification.”

False! A quarter of university students studied a BTEC rather than A Levels and this route is
