YOUR ROUTE TO SUCCESS
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE
RIGHT COURSE FOR ME?
We often get asked this question by students who are unsure which course to take. We understand
it can be daunting deciding what course to do after finishing school, but there’s plenty of advice
available from careers advisers in school and college, tutors, and your parents/carers. Have a look at
these tips for picking the right course for you:
DO WHAT
YOU LOVE
You need to be passionate about the course you are going
to take - you will be dedicating the next few years of your life
to it so it needs to be something you enjoy.
What subjects do you enjoy doing at school?
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy in your spare time?
Could any of these interests point you towards a
particular course?
LOOK TO
THE FUTURE
Have you thought about what career you would like to follow
in the future? If so, there may be courses which will open
doors into the career you want.
If you are thinking about university, you can check the entry
requirements for degree courses using the search facility at
www.ucas.com
Be careful: if you find you are going to need a subject you
do not enjoy, you may need to reconsider your ambition!
WHAT IS YOUR
LEARNING STYLE?
Do you enjoy working in a classroom setting? Perhaps you
prefer a practical, hands-on course?
Look closely at how you will study a course and how it is
assessed. For instance, are there any exams to complete?
Do you need to submit coursework or essays? Or is the
course assessed through observations and practical work?
