Porsche, It’s not just a car, it’s the experience!by Pier BurgessNo other car has such a tumultuous history, racing spirit, artistic craftsmanship, and innovation as the Porsche. Thisis what has drawn us to love and learn about these iconiccars, and this is what also led my husband and me to findand join the Maverick Region PCA Club.In 2008 my husband Glenn and I bought our firstPorsche, a Carrera S. But it was not until we purchasedour 2013 911 Carrera S that we really began to appreciatethe cultural significance of these cars. Our fascination andlove of Porsches has grown ever since. Since Glenn and Ihave become members of the Maverick Region of PCA,we have met so many wonderful people. It has been such apositive influence in both our lives. Its members are diversein their interests and personalities, and the passion for theircars resonates on and off the roadways. Maverick Regionmembers will never hesitate to pass along their experiences, history, and knowledge they have gained while being caretakers of their fabulous cars. Their enthusiasm is contagious. If not for the Mavericks, we would never have participatedin the local car shows and Concours events. We neverwould have experienced the excitement of the Hill CountryRallye in Kerrville, or spied Wayne Carini at the Concoursat Amelia Island. It felt great to be confident enough totalk with car owners about their vehicles, and we learnedso much more. Our Maverick friends did not hesitate insharing tips or warning us about areas that might lead usastray in our searches for that special car. For that we arevery grateful. I never imagined I would want to crawl underthe belly of a car with a flashlight looking for rust or theexcessive use of bondo, or even checking out door gaps ordeciphering engines. I did buy a miniature engine kit just tolearn about the parts of a motor and how it all works. Yes, Idid make it run! We traveled from one end of the country tothe other visiting sellers and dealers and watching auctions, looking at cars, enjoying our time together in anticipationof what we might find. Imagine my surprise as I watchedmy husband using the translator to speak with a technicianfrom Stuttgart, Germany, and researching parts from the UKand leathers from Italy! This all due to the friendships andcomradery of the Mavericks. We are still the proud owners of our 2013 911 CarreraS. I love those spirited drives. There are also times when welike to slow down and smell the flowers. For those times,we love to drive our iconic 356s: our ‘61 T5 and our ‘62T6 D’Ieteren Roadster, and we can’t forget our steady andsturdy ‘64 356 SC. We are always ready to hit the road. Ourkids and grandkids love the cars as well. Many a weekendis spent rubbing little fingerprints from the car doors, thesteering wheel, and windows from the grandchildren whobeg for rides and want to hear the engine roar and imaginethemselves as Speed Racer!Even now in these unusual times, our Mavericks leadershiphas kept our spirits high. We still enjoy the comradery ofvirtual happy hours, weekend rallies, and Mavs & Mochas.Smaller gatherings for Pop Ups add relief to those feeling pentup. But most of all, in times where there are many people inneed, or people must quarantine themselves, the Maverickscommunity service activities are so critical. The continuousfood and advocacy donation drives help ease much neededvoids in our community. The Mavericks also support thefight against Breast Cancer, which holds a special place inmy heart. I lost my sister in such a battle. With all of this, the coming together to support each other renews our faithin the goodness in people’s hearts. It is an honor to be a partof a membership such as this. We’re looking forward to the continued love of Porschecars and newfound friendships that make the Mavericksso special.8 September
