Rotary book fair pulls the crowds<br />

Along queueofbook lovers<br />
waitedfor the Rangiora<br />
RotaryClub’s35th annual<br />
book fairtoopen last Friday.<br />
There was also aqueue of<br />
customers waiting at the door<br />
the following morning, keen<br />
to peruse the books,<br />
magazines,CDs, DVDs<br />
jigsaws and vinyl LPs on offer.<br />
Recordsales were<br />
achieved duringthe two days,<br />
with all proceeds going to<br />
worthylocal causes.<br />
‘‘It was one of the bestfairs<br />
we have had,’’ said organiser<br />
Bruce Walker, aRangiora<br />
Rotarian.<br />
“Everyone seems to have<br />
used the lockdown period to<br />
sort theirbooks and we had a<br />
great selection of different<br />
titlesthat appealedtoawide<br />
audience.<br />
‘‘The strong support from<br />
the community makes the<br />
effortinmounting the book<br />
fair very worthwhile.”<br />

the clubappreciatedthe high<br />
level of community support.<br />

The Hartley School of PerformingArts<br />
25th anniversary production finally took<br />
centrestage at the Rangiora TownHall<br />
last weekafter uncertainty over Covid<br />
19.<br />
AlertLevel 2restrictions in the leadup<br />
made rehearsalsachallenge, but it<br />
didn’t show as the cast rose to the<br />
occasion.<br />
School director Dale HartleyBrown<br />
says it has been close to asellout season,<br />
with more than300 people watching<br />
each of the six performances.<br />
‘‘I’mvery happy and muchrelieved. I<br />
couldnot have imagined it would sell<br />
this well.Ithoughtpeople would be abit<br />
reluctanttocome out, but Ithinkpeople<br />
are just desperate to be out doing things<br />
and they want to support localwhichis<br />
really nice.’’<br />
The show itselftook the audience to<br />
faraway places,with the opening<br />
prologue catching the fear of wartime<br />
London duringthe blitz.<br />
Soon after,the audiencewas<br />
introduced to the magicalland of Narnia<br />
with adanceperformance to the Queen<br />
classic It’s AKind Of Magic,while<br />
another Queen number, UnderPressure<br />
kicked things off after the interval.<br />
The musical score wasanappropriate<br />
mix fromwartime classicstoold<br />
favouritesand more modern songs.<br />
The loveable lion Aslan, playedbySian<br />
Hassan, provedtobeacrowd favourite<br />
as she faced off againstthe White Witch,<br />
played by MichelleO’Brien.<br />
