Rubbish haul
disappointing
By SHELLEY TOPP
Volunteers taking part in the annual
Foothills Honey Ashley/Rakahuri
River Cleanup collected 980kg of
rubbish.
‘‘It was so disappointing,’’ said
Laura Malcolm, one of the owners of
Foothills Honey.
‘‘The Ashley River has areputation
for beautiful picnic and swimming
spots, as well as walking trails.
‘‘But, unfortunately, for others it is
better known as adumping ground.
‘‘It is heartbreaking to see our
beautiful rivers that we all love to
enjoy being used as adumping
ground when we all know it is illegal
to dump rubbish this way.’’
The Waimakariri District Council’s
environmental services unit
manager, Tracy Boundy, says the
council does not want people
dumping rubbish on public, private
or reserve land and those caught will
be fined.
‘‘If people find dumped rubbish
they can either ring the council or
raise aSnap, Send, Solve request and
we will respond and look into it.’’
Compliance officers are warranted
under the Litter Act to investigate
dumped rubbish.
‘‘If people are caught dumping
rubbish, or we can prove who has
dumped it, we will and do fine the
person responsible. This has
happened several times this year.’’
The cleanup took place last
Sunday.
vision is important in dealings
with the Government.
“We know we have benefited
from significant postquake
Central Government investment.
‘‘However, we now need to shift
our engagement and ensure we
are also attracting and receiving
the share of investment and the
