Work of community volunteers recognised<br />

Hard workand exceptionalservice to the<br />
Hurunui District were rewardedrecently<br />
when several citizens received awards at a<br />
special ceremony in Rotherham.<br />
MayorMarie Blacksaid volunteers<br />
enriched the livesofmany in the district,<br />
and did not seek acknowledgement. ‘‘It is<br />
through celebrations likethese thatweget<br />
achance to recognisethe efforts of many.’’<br />
Recipients of Community Services Awards<br />
were:<br />
Sue Harris (Amuri),for her servicestothe<br />
Waiau communitythrough Plunket, the<br />
School PTA andplay centre, the AmuriA&P<br />
Association, the Women’s Farm Discussion<br />
group, the localGardenClub andthe Amuri<br />
ArtsCouncil. She is alongstanding member<br />
of theAmuri Historical Societyand the<br />
Waiau Citizens Association, and has been<br />
involved in theAmuri Golf Club, the Waiau<br />
Cricket Club,and Waiau Tennis Club.Sue<br />
initiated the Waiau StoryBoard, recording<br />
thehistory of thecommunity.<br />
Trevor StanleyJoblin (Amberley),for<br />
showcasing localbusinesses andthe Hurunui<br />
throughclassiccar ralliesheorganisedafter<br />
moving to Amberleyfollowing the 2010<br />
Christchurchquakes. In doing so he raised<br />
thousands of dollars for local charities and<br />
groups. Trevor, who recentlyturned 80, is<br />
retiring from organising future rallies.<br />
Debbie Anderson (Cheviot), for<br />
involvement in many organisations in the<br />
Cheviot community.She has held positions<br />
on the PromotionsGroup, the Knox<br />
CommunityCentre,the CommunityCar<br />
committee,the Golf Club, the GardenClub,<br />
theFloral Group andthe Community Trust.<br />
Debbie hasbeen aboard member of<br />
Enterprise <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> for eight years,<br />
and is amember of the HurunuiGarden<br />
Festivalcommittee. She has been involved<br />
withPlunket and theCheviot AreaSchool<br />
Board of Trusteesand various sports groups.<br />
AlexBaxter(Glenmark), who took over the<br />
position of trusteefor the OmihiHall<br />
committee from hisfather in 1983, stepping<br />
in to thesecretary’s role, whichhestill holds.<br />
When the hall was devastatedbyfire in 20<strong>15</strong>,<br />
Alex became chair of the newly formed<br />
committee —the Omihi Community and<br />
Sport Hall Inc, whichopenedadebtfree<br />
replacementfacility in 2018. Alexhas also<br />
served as chair of the KateValley Community<br />
Liaison committee for 18 years.<br />
RichardTapper (HanmerSprings), has<br />
been the publisherofthe Village<strong>News</strong>,‘‘The<br />
Pinkie’’ as it isaffectionately known, for 13<br />
years. In thattimeithas grown from asheet<br />
of 200 copies to its currentelectronic<br />
circulationofjust over 700 subscribers.<br />
During lockdown, his ‘‘cyberPinkie’’became<br />
the gluethat held the community together<br />
during atimeofisolation andloneliness for<br />
many.Healso raised theidea of alocal<br />
foodbankand the needfor assistancefor<br />
people who losttheirjobs —aconcept taken<br />
up and administered by the HanmerSprings<br />
Business Association.<br />
Mel Ruck(Hurunui) has beeninvolved<br />
withthe Waikari Hall and Reserve Advisory<br />
Group for<strong>15</strong>years and held the chair<br />
position of the group for nine years.She took<br />
over as caretaker of the campingground, has<br />
been amember ofthe HawardenWaikari<br />
Civil Defencegroup for the past fiveyears,<br />
and nowleads the group. She often givesup<br />
her Saturdays to supervise aperiodic<br />
detentiongroup, and is alwayhelping in the<br />
community withgardening or cleaning up<br />
rubbish.She has held many positionson<br />
community groups, is amember of the<br />
HawardenA&P Association,areliefschool<br />
bus driver,and recently joinedthe Friendsof<br />
the WaikariHospital as avolunteer.<br />
Mayors Community Service Award: Former<br />
MayorWintonDalley and his wife Jean<br />
received the Mayor’saward.MrDalley was<br />
Hurunuimayor for threeterms whenhe<br />
retired,bringing thecurtain down on 26<br />
years in localgovernment —nine as mayor,<br />
six as acouncillor and the restonofhis local<br />
Waikari community ward committee.<br />

help withanew displaysystem in the Cheviot<br />

The Port RobinsonReserve AdvisoryGroup<br />
was awarded $2000for wilding pine<br />

The Lottery Bush Conservation group<br />
received $1100tobuy and set up predator<br />
monitors in theLotteryBushScenic<br />
Reserve. The HurunuiCommunity<br />
Committeewas awarded $1000 to further<br />
develop the Village GreenDistrictReserve<br />
in Princes Street,Waikari.<br />
