A Note from the Director

As the pandemic rolls on, its impact continues to affect people differently. While everyone
has had to adjust routines, work and schools setups, and social contact, many individuals
and families in Burbank are lucky still to have their jobs and income, providing some sense
of stability. With the unemployment rate in Los Angeles County over 15 percent, many others
are struggling. They may find themselves looking for work for the first time in many years or
re-entering a job market where different skills are required. Along with other agencies,
including the City of Burbank’s WorkForce Connection, Burbank Public Library is working to
ensure we can support job seekers in finding gainful employment.
The first in-person programs to return to the Library this fall have been focused on developing basic technology skills
and utilizing Library resources that can help craft a professional resume and use online application sites. Job seeking
continues to change and become more automated. For many positions, there are several layers of software reviews
before a human looks at an applicant’s qualifications. Being successful in this landscape requires more than the classic
job-finding skill set, and Library staff can help people navigate this.
For additional help, the California State Library has funded access for all Californians to two online resources, JobNow
and VetNow, which provide assistance with finding work and applying for benefits. This includes the option to submit
a cover letter or resume for review by a trained professional who can advise on how to present your skills in the best
possible light. These resources, along with the resume assistance and practice tests of TERC (Testing & Education
Resource Center) and the over 500 continuing education courses of Universal Class, are available for free with a
Burbank Library card at burbanklibrary.org
The Library also partners with the City Economic Development Department and SCORE to offer free one-on-one small
business counseling to entrepreneurs. Some of our most admired companies started during times of economic hardship,
and maybe yours will be next.

During the month of October everyone in the community was encouraged to read the same
book and participate in discussion and learning surrounding the subject matter. Our selection
for 2020 was chosen to encourage Burbank to engage in conversation about racial equity and
the Black experience in America. Activities and discussion helped to create a
foundation of ideas to build on for the future. Thank you to all who participated!

Geared toward those who need to learn basic skills for finding
a job in today’s online world. Laptops will be provided and you
will be given a flashdrive to save any work from class.

Introduction to Excel
Learn how Microsoft Excel easily allows users to calculate
manipulate, and format numbers and other types of data.
Topics covered include: Opening a worksheet, identifying
its components, entering data, and performing basic
mathematical formulas.

Testing & Education Reference
Center (TERC) contains a handy
resume builder. Simply hover your mouse
over CAREER in the top menu and select
Resume Writing. In TERC’s Virtual Career
Library there are tips for writing cover
letters as well.
JobNow (by BrainFuse) is a site that will
provide help with searching for available
positions in your area, preparing for an
interview, or creating a resume. They
offer live assistance and feedback on your
resume and cover letter.
Universal Class offers a course in using
Microsoft Word templates for resumes
under Computer Training.
Creating an account allows you to pick up
where you left off each time you log in.

SCORE provides small business mentoring and education. Burbank Public Library,
in partnership with City of Burbank Economic Development Department, provides
free one-hour Zoom appointments with mentors from SCORE, who will provide assistance in developing business plans,
identifying seed funding and more. Reservations can be made on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Library event calendar.

Our online book club was formed to connect to the reading community. Over 80 people have joined

Would you like to help an adult improve their reading skills?

Attend this orientation on Zoom and learn more about becoming a literacy
tutor for the Library. Volunteer literacy tutors help adults become more
confident by developing and improving their literacy skills, including basic reading, writing,
and comprehension. The Library offers FREE one-to-one tutoring to adults, 18 or older, who speak
and understand English, but read and write below 8th grade level. Burbank Public Library has provided
literacy services since 1992. You can be part of this great service to our community. Following this orientation
