20 Selwyn Times Wednesday November 11 2020 Term 4 Update Principal’s Message 2020 will be remembered for many things - perhaps overall it will be remembered by our school and wider community as one that tested our resilience and ability to navigate through the very tricky situations presented by Covid 19. As a college community we also acknowledge our wider community for their support and aroha following the death of our Senior Leader Brad Milne due to an unexpected medical event during the term three holidays. Despite difficulty and tragedy, 2020 has been a very successful year for the College as we build to 2021 where we become a full school of over 1300 learners. For those who have walked this journey with us from the beginning we thank you for your support. It seems such a short time ago that we opened our doors to 225 learners in 2017. Over the coming months you will see modification to our existing buildings and Rolleston College Leadership The aim of the Leadership Programme at Rolleston College is to create a positive environment where all students can flourish. It also provides opportunities for learners who wish to enhance their experience at College, by contributing to various areas of school life and embracing the Rolleston College Spirit. Leadership offers challenges – intellectually, organisationally and socially. Learning leadership skills helps you develop potential. It gives you the opportunity to make choices, experience decision making, and accept responsibility. There are many different Leadership opportunities at Rolleston College and these reflect the many different ways in which someone can show leadership and give back to the College. We have recently gone through a vigorous process to elect the first of our leadership positions for 2021. This process involved applications, speeches, group interviews and individual interviews to select our Year 13 leadership positions. The next step is to select our Year 10 - 12 Whanau Ambassadors and this will be completed by the end of Term 4. some significant extension to our current physical footprint to accommodate this growth and further enhance our state of the art facilities. Our successes in all domains be it academic, sporting, cultural and arts have been impressive at all year levels. We showcased some of our success in these areas at our CASE evening last Thursday and will further celebrate success through our prize givings in the coming weeks. Our gifted name from Taumutu Horoeka Haemata means the The Flourishing Lancewood and our learners continue to grow from strength to strength during their time with us from the young sampling to the mature tree. They flourish and lead with confidence and we are very proud of the Yr 13 leaders who will represent our college in 2021. Wednesday November 11 2020 Selwyn Times 21 We are extremely excited to announce the following learners as our 2021 Head Students Ella Jarvis Alessandra Ward Anika Gates-Thorn Caleb Smith Avelima Loua Sport Rolleston College has had some amazing results in the sporting arena recently: Highlights include our Senior Boys Basketball Team winning the Thomson & Whelan Division Two Basketball Competition in 2020 in their first year in the competition. Hopefully the team will get the opportunity to play in Division one in 2021. They also played in the College Park Invitational Tournament having wins over Christ College, Christchurch Boys and Rangiora High School. The Junior Girls Netball Tournament Team went unbeaten in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Tournament and won the Mixed Grade for 2020. They had some big wins against Hillmorton High School, Ellesmere College and Mt Hutt College. Nick Rush competed in the National Mountain Biking Champs in Wellington and finished 4th in the U16 Boys category. We would also like to wish our Senior Mixed Touch Team all the best as they prepare for the National Touch Tournament held in Rotorua in December. Performing Arts Rolleston College Junior and Senior Theatresports teams have competed this year in the Court Theatre’s Theatresports Competition. The Senior team of Bella Newcombe, Sydney Tupou, Lydia Hawes, Rachel Cook and Micaiah Pitkethley came second in their heat. The Junior team of Yana Chernova, Emelia Newman and Hannah Nolan won their heat and are due to compete on the Court Theatre stage at the end of November. We wish them all the best! During Term 4 a group of year 9 learners have been studying Children’s theatre and are creating a show to take into the Rolleston Community. Students are going to visit the local preschool ‘Paradise for little Angels’ and perform to the children there. The learners are incorporating audience involvement and a positive message in their shows. We are really looking forward to their performance at the end of week 5. Culture This term Rolleston College joined the Selwyn Combined Kapa Haka group (Te Kahui Whetu o Waihora). This meant the coming together of four schools, Rolleston College, Lincoln High School, Ellesmere College & Darfield High School. The group has been meeting throughout the term for practises. This is an awesome opportunity for our learners and will provide a pathway for those learners that wish to compete at Kapa Haka Regionals in years to come. RC’s Got Talent 2020 The talent was more evident than ever in this year’s RC’s Got Talent. The audience numbers were well up from the heats with the Covid level having just been dropped back to level 1 the day before the final. This year the final coincided with our first Exhibition of the year and this proved to be a hit with the local community getting in to support all of our performers. 3rd place went to Alyssa, Cam and Lin for their rendition of Vanessa Carlton’s A Thousand Miles, 2nd place went to Benjamin Pienaar for his flawless drum solo and 1st place was awarded to Keith Chiwara for his self composed rap in which he also created the backing music for. This year we also had an emerging talent award with the prize being donated by Rollestons Robert Harris, this went to Taylor, Donny, Tim and Jabob for their rocked up cover of Oasis’s Don’t Look Back in Anger. Thanks to all those who came and supported and also to those who helped out in one way or another. Special thanks to Hamish for his tireless tech work, Will and Mitchell for their work with the lights, George for being our MC and finally, thank you to our Judges for the final: Mrs Skelton, Mrs Shaw and Mr Dean. School Formal On Saturday 26th September, we held the inaugural Year 12 Ball at Larcombs Vineyard, Rolleston. Our learners looked absolutely incredible, and there was some fantastic dancing by all. We had some incredible entrances by our learners - our friendly local community constable kindly transported a group via police car complete with sirens, there were numerous limousines and one learner arrived on the back of a motorcycle, with their entire family escorting them as a motorcade.
