Martin Dowson had a<br />
whirlwind visit to <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
this week meeting hierarchy<br />
from the district’s squash clubs<br />
and seeking feedbackfrom<br />
grassroots level.<br />
Mr Dowson took over his<br />
“dream role” as Squash New<br />
Zealandchief executive officer<br />
role just three weeksago. He<br />
was previously involvedwith<br />
High Performance SportNew<br />
Zealand.<br />
Squash New Zealand has<br />
18,000 squash players<br />
nationwide under its umbrella<br />
and he is keen for feedbackon<br />
the sport from the regions.<br />

Mid Canterbury squash clubs<br />
come under the Midlands<br />
district, whichruns from<br />
RakaiatoOamaruand has 16<br />
affiliated clubs; seven are in<br />
Mid Canterbury.<br />

national affiliation fees,<br />

interclub competitions, grading<br />
systems, socialmedia platforms<br />
and updating the national<br />
iSquash system.<br />
There were plans in the<br />
district for amultimedia<br />
campaign earlynext year,Ms<br />
Rae said.<br />
“We wanttoremind people<br />
that squash is here,” she said,<br />
although Squash Midlands had<br />
seen asurge in players boasting<br />
1000 throughout the district.<br />
As part of his information<br />
gathering he was asking club<br />
members what was working<br />
well for them, what challenges<br />
they faced and asking them<br />
what advice they wanted to pass<br />
to him to guide him in his role.<br />
Mr Dowsonhas played<br />
squash since studying at Otago<br />
University and is amember of<br />
Browns Bay, in Auckland.He<br />
has continued to play interclub<br />
for 30 years and describes<br />
himself as an average Bgrader.<br />
“I understand the challenges<br />
that many clubsface financially<br />
and how to grow or simply<br />
maintain memberships. Ialso<br />
am awareofhow much asquash<br />
club can be partofthe local<br />
community, it is agame that so<br />
simply connects all typesof<br />
New Zealanders socially<br />
together thatcan lead to so<br />
much health and happiness.”<br />
The information gatheredso<br />
far had created alot of<br />
discussionbut there were still<br />
districts to visit, he said.<br />

Bovis cluster<br />
under control<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>districthas a<br />
growing numberofconfirmed<br />
Mycoplasma bovis (Mbovis)<br />
casesbut officialssay it'snot<br />
widespread, justanisolated<br />
cluster connected by animal<br />
movements.<br />
Thedistrict has six<br />
confirmedproperties<br />
infected with Mbovis,a<br />
further 13 under notice of<br />
direction and 16 under active<br />
surveillance. There are seven<br />
confirmedcasesin<br />
Canterbury.<br />

Stuart Anderson saidtwo of<br />
the confirmed propertiesin<br />
Canterbury andone in<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>were directly<br />
linked by animalmovements<br />
to oneof three infected<br />
dairies detectedfrom August<br />
bulk tankmilk screening.<br />

Canterbury was confirmed<br />
following adetect resultfrom<br />
September screening.<br />
“We are workingclosely<br />
with all affectedfarmers,<br />
theirstaffand whanauto<br />
ensurethings run as smoothly<br />
as possible, andthatthey are<br />
wellsupported,” he said.<br />
“It’s important to notethis<br />
is notanoutbreak –the<br />
Mbovis programmeisactively<br />
looking for those finalpockets<br />
of infected properties and<br />
fullyexpected to find more<br />
over spring,” he said.<br />

“It’s atimewehavemore<br />
samplestotest, animals are<br />
under stress from calving and<br />
we have 2018 heifersentering<br />
the milking platform for the<br />
firsttime.”<br />
It wasalso not believed to<br />
be widespread.<br />
“No additionalfarmsinMid<br />
Canterbury,otherthan those<br />
threedairies originally<br />
detected inAugust, were<br />
detectedinSeptember or<br />
Octoberbulk tank milk<br />
screening,giving us<br />
confidencethis is an isolated<br />
clusterconnectedbyanimal<br />
movements.”<br />
Programme staffwould<br />
continuetotrace the<br />
movementsofcattle until all<br />
those of interestwere<br />
investigated. Theywere<br />
helpedbygood Nait records.<br />
The <strong>Ashburton</strong> district has<br />
had34cleared confirmed<br />
properties withmore than<br />
$44mpaid across 307 claims<br />
fromthe district, but there<br />
were still 24 financial claims<br />
being processedrelating to<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> farms; somefarms<br />
withmultiple claims.<br />
Mr Anderson said 13 were<br />
being assessed,two claims<br />
are loss of milkincomebeing<br />
paid on amonthly basis and<br />
nineclaimsare acrossthree<br />
farms whichare subjectto<br />
ongoinglegal action/<br />
negotiation.<br />
