Students’ hard work rewarded<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>College has named<br />
its dux and runnerup to dux<br />
and both havebeentop<br />
academic performers since<br />
Year 9.<br />

the recent Year13awards<br />
ceremony held at the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>Trust Event Centre.<br />
Bothgirls are currently<br />
revisinghard for final school<br />
exams andbothwillstart<br />
university next February.<br />
Lily said she was surprised<br />
and veryhappy to be given the<br />
award for thebestoverall<br />
academic student.<br />
Shehad worked hard over<br />
the pastyear and waspleased<br />
that that work hadpaid off.<br />
Her parents had attended the<br />
awards ceremonyand were<br />
very proudofher efforts.<br />
Shewill continueher<br />
education at Otago andwill<br />
study for afouryear bachelor<br />
of law degree.She has been<br />
awardedaUniversity of Otago<br />
ViceChancellor’sscholarship,<br />
worth $10,000, that will go<br />
towardsher first yeartuition<br />
fees.<br />
Lily is also interestedin<br />
economicsand is currently<br />
studyingfor ascholarship<br />
exam in that subject.<br />

Penny is off to Lincoln<br />
University next year andwill<br />
study agricultural science for<br />
the nextfour years.<br />
‘‘I’m interested in plant and<br />
animal science, so that might<br />
be apath Ipursue.<br />
‘‘I’m also interested in<br />
business management on the<br />
farm, so Ihave afew potential<br />
future options in mind at this<br />
stage.’’<br />
Penny lives on alifestyle<br />
blockatWillowby andhas<br />
been the top academic<br />
performer every year since<br />
starting at <strong>Ashburton</strong>College.<br />
Alongwith her younger<br />
sister andmum, sheisa<br />
volunteer with the Willowby<br />
RuralFire Force.<br />
She has been heavily<br />
involved with TeenAgwhileat<br />
college.<br />
Penny will be driving<br />
tractors for Drummond<br />
Contracting overthe summer<br />
holidays and has also received<br />
anumberofscholarships to<br />
helpwith thecosts of her<br />
higher education.<br />

Armistice Day service held at RSA<br />

Armistice Day was<br />
commemorated with a<br />
service at the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
RSA on Wednesday.<br />
The armistice was signed<br />
signed on theeleventh hour<br />
of the eleventh dayofthe<br />
eleventh month 1918 and<br />
ended hostilities on the<br />
Western Front between the<br />
Allies of World War1 and<br />
Germany.<br />
Atwominute silence was<br />
held following the11th<br />
chime of the town clock at<br />
11am andwreaths were<br />
laid.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> mayor Neil<br />
Brown told the gathering<br />
that the <strong>Ashburton</strong> district<br />
had lost 500peopleinWorld<br />
War 1.<br />
Some 10 per cent of New<br />
Zealand’s population had<br />
been deployed and over<br />
18,000 had been killed and<br />
40,000wounded in the<br />
conflict.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> RSA president<br />
MervBrenton said the<br />
signing of the Armisticewas<br />
atime of relief and atime to<br />
celebrate the end of war.<br />
We needed to reflect on<br />
the affects of all wars and to<br />
learnfromthe past and to<br />
move forwardinanonconfrontational<br />
way.<br />
The Armistice service<br />
was heldnexttothe Lone<br />
Pine remembrance tree at<br />
the RSA this year.<br />
The tree, aTurkishred<br />
pine, wasgrown from seeds<br />
sourced from Gallipoliand<br />
planted in May 2016.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> armyand air<br />
cadets carried out point<br />
duties and the service also<br />
included the Last Post, the<br />
Ode of Remembrance,<br />
reveille and prayer.<br />

Hospice<br />
kicks off<br />
campaign<br />
for home<br />

Hospice Mid Canterbury has<br />
movedinto its forever home, at<br />
the sametime as its fundraising<br />
machine embarksonan<br />
importantcampaign to pay for<br />
the building.<br />
The hospice has movedfrom<br />
Park Streettothe former Sealy<br />
StreetMedical Centre rooms on<br />
the corner of Havelock and<br />
Sealy Streets.<br />
The organisation needs to<br />
raise $500,000 to buy the<br />
building.<br />
‘‘We’rehopeful to cover a<br />
portionofthisthrough<br />
generous community grants,<br />
howeverour committee hasa<br />
target of $250,000 to generate<br />
throughfundraisingactivities,’’<br />
said fundraising committee<br />
spokesperson Pam McCormick.<br />
‘‘This equatestoabout $7 for<br />
every person in ourdistrict,<br />
something we believe is an<br />
achievable target with our<br />
community’s support.’’<br />
Mrs McCormick said there<br />
were several projectsinthe<br />
pipeline, including an open day<br />
at the new hospice home on<br />
December6. The facility will be<br />
open for people to look around,<br />
learn about whathospice does<br />
in Mid Canterbury,and give a<br />
donation if they want.<br />
Thereisgogovernment<br />
funding for hospice.<br />
Pam said three eventswere<br />
plannednext yeartohelp raise<br />
money for thehouse and<br />
ongoing hospiceservices, and<br />
the lastevent was aChristmas<br />
homes tour in December.<br />
