Angela’s book,AChange is Gonna Come, is astoryabout farming and community, told through the eyes of an endangered native bird, the Australasian bittern Bernard Raupo BitternIII, or Boomer to his friends. Angela said the McDonalds had done some amazingwork on their farm and their wetland featured in the book, which was launched last week at agathering of about80 people at the Ashburton Art Gallery. Thecommittee was set up a decade agotohelp address the district’s waterquality and quantity issues. In the early stages,working together seemed like an impossible goal but changehas happened. She said she hoped thebook would encourageothers to get involved in makingchangefor the environment. Boomerthebittern came to life through theartistictalent of Barbara Jaine; the family histories of both women are subtly woven through the book. Angela said the book was aimed at children but would be enjoyed by adults;copies are already selling at Paper Plus Ashburtonand onlinevia Facebook. She said it had been great to have feedback fromthose who had read the storyand she spokentomany people busy doing planting projects themselves. ‘‘Hearing about their progress and what is being donerather thanwhat is not being donewas so inspiring and is abig part of why I decided to write the story in the firstplace.’’ Sensory toys assist Holly’s learning MICK.JENSEN @ashburtoncourier.co.nz Holly BeaumontSmithisabig user of the sensory equipment at Ashburton Toy Library. The 21monthold has Turner’s Syndrome, a condition that can cause a varietyofmedical and developmental problems, including short height. Holly also has some hearing loss, but loves nothing better than gettingtogrips with the hedgehog balancepods, sensory light tubes, colour changing touch board and other itemsinthe toy library’s large collection. The sensoryequipment was generously funded by Advance Ashburton at the beginning of the year. Holly’s mum Kate, who is a formertoy library committee member, has been bringing Holly and her older brothers to the toy library for the past four years. She says Hollygets alot out of sensory toys. The tactile equipment stimulated her daughter’s senses,helped with recognition skills and with fingereye coordination. Holly was on growth hormones, she said, but was super happyand making good progress. The Ashburton Toy Library has over 900 toys available to 135 member familiesthat includesover 200 children. Current board member Stacey Stewartisonthe Toy LibraryFederation of NZ national committee, which supports the 180 toy libraries around the country. The Ashburton Toy Library shifted to its cosy roomsat106 VictoriaStreetin2017 and is on the look out for more spacious premises. It is open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.30am until 12.30pm. NEWS Ashburton Courier, November 12, 2020 9 Anew team and pay equity too! It has been awhirlwind few weeks since the election with flights to Wellington for caucus meetings, anew Labour cabinet announced, and various meetings and events being held all over the Rangitata electorate. You may have seen the final results of the election following the release of the special votes last week. I’m pleased to have had my majority extend to 4400 votes, and thank the people of this electorate again. New Zealanders have given us astrong mandate to recover and rebuild from Covid19, and we have formed astrong team to deliver. Jacinda Ardern has announced the new ministers for our Labour Government and it is acaucus with awealth of experience, and also new talent with first hand experience in their portfolio areas. Our ministers will focus on two key priorities; to continue our health response to keep New Zealanders safe from Covid19, and to drive our economic recovery to build back better. The lineup reflects these priorities, with an enhanced health team and asenior economic team. We know New Zealand continues to respond to some enormous challenges, but we are in the best position possible to get on with the job. Ialso know that Ashburton and Mid Canterbury is faced with our own challenges –particularly when it comes to our available workforce. Our local and pressing issues will be heard in Wellington. Iamespecially pleased for my good friend and colleague (and now minister!) Jan Tinetti. A member of our Class of 2017, Jan is now the Minister for Women, Internal Affairs and Associate Minister of Education. Jan is passionate, dedicated and has an absolute wealth of knowledge, particularly when it comes to education, as aformer principal. Her first job as anew minister was to announce that employees in femaledominated occupations now have aclearer pathway to pay equity, with changes to New Zealand’s Equal Pay Act having come into force. Currently there are more than 86,000 New Zealanders progressing 15 pay equity claims in education, health and the public sector. The act creates an accessible process to work through pay equity claims and had unanimous support from Parliament, showing us just how important achieving pay equity is. Covid19 has highlighted the many workers who do important work but who are not well or fairly paid for it. By working towards pay equity for women and increasing wages, we are helping everyone to share in the benefits of our economic plan as we recover and rebuild. Achieving pay equity and putting more money in the hands of our lowest paid workers has significant positive impact on their lives, and is likely to have flowon benefits to their whanau and the wider community.
