ASHBURTON ALTRUSA
We welcomed Danae McConnell,
the incoming governor of Altrusa International
ofNew Zealand, for the biennium
of 2021-2023 to our last meeting.
The replacement for the pre-historic
Australian Wollemi pine in the Ashburton
Domain stolen not long after being
planted, should by now have aplaque
recording the donation by Altrusa of the
tree, placed with it.
It is hoped that the tree in its new
position and secured behind a steel
structure will be safer this time.
We have reminded the Ashburton
District Council of our millennium gift to
Ashburton of the two statues of women
carved in Mt Somers stone, placed on
the Ashburton green opposite the Town
Clock.
As we move towards the end of the
year, we celebrate Christmas in the
community with our annual Christmas
Tree of Remembrance in the arcade.
This will be in place from the middle
of December.
It allows people to remember those
who won't be with us this year, by
purchasing astar and placing it on the
tree.
This is particularly poignant for all of
us who have family overseas, whom we
can't physically give them ahug.
We have collected books for children
of all ages, to be given in Christmas
hampers distributed by local charities.
On November 12 the Foot Clinic
celebrates its third birthday with a
celebratory lunch, with the 30 plus
clients and the six cutters.
Catering opportunities have
includedthe Creative Fibres celebration,
and the coming afternoon tea at Trott's
Gardens for representatives from the 10
rest homes in the area.
We will be assisting Rotary in
Ashburton with their potato sales. Plans
and dates for the coming year are
coming together as anticipate continued
good health in New Zealand.
ASHBURTON
COUNTY
LIONS
The October tea meeting of the
Ashburton County Lions was held at
Hotel Ashburton on Wednesday the
28th. President Lynette Lovett welcomed
agood turnout of members and
16 visitors from other Lions clubs in the
Ashburton area.
The speaker for the night was Sandi
Wood the executive officer of the
Advance Ashburton Community Foundation.
Sandi explained the workings of
the foundation in gathering together
donations from the community, investing
the money and returning the income
back to the community in the form of
grants and scholarships.
One of the special aspects to the
foundation is that donors are able to
specify the causes that they would like to
provide ongoing support to, meaning
that it is not just aone off donation but
something that will continue for years to
come.
Donations of toiletries were collected
to be given to Community House
for redistribution tothose in need.
Thank you letters were read from
several Ashburton youth organisations
that had recently received support from
the club.
Preparations were discussed for the
next two major events tobeheld before
the end of the year. The annual Toot for
Tucker collection on November 16 and a
new event for the County Lions Club in
the form of aChristmas Tree Festival to
be held in December.
We again look forward to the generous
support we always receive from the
community to help make these such
successful events.
The meeting then concluded with
pleasant social time, the drawing of the
raffle and some entertaining fines from
our tail twisters.
