New citizens sworn in at ceremony<br />
Nineteennew citizens have<br />
pledged allegiance by oath or<br />
affirmation at aceremony in<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> last week.<br />
The new citizens hail from<br />
India, thePhilippines,USA,<br />
Australia, Argentinaand<br />
France.<br />
Supportedbyfamily and<br />
friends, they attended the<br />
ceremony at theevent centre.<br />
They included Mt Hutt Lodge<br />
owners Butch and Jo Stern.<br />
Mr Stern is an American by<br />
birth and his wifeAustralian<br />
and they’velivedinMid<br />
Canterbury for around 15 years.<br />
Mayor Brown told the Sterns<br />
and theother new citizens that<br />
their journey to become New<br />
Zealanders was nowcomplete.<br />
He saidcultureand<br />
traditions of this country were<br />
wovenintothe fabric of New<br />
Zealanders and they, as new<br />
citizens, now shared that<br />
common bond.<br />
He saidthe new citizens<br />
brought all of the history and<br />
traditions of their homeland,<br />
which enriched thiscountry.<br />

Another award for Min Kim work<br />
Min Kim’s impressive artwork Poet of Spring (pictured) has won the<br />
People’s Choice award at this year’s <strong>Ashburton</strong> Society of Arts annual<br />
exhibition. The oil on canvas work was chosen as the premier award<br />
winner by judge Michael Eaton ahead of the exhibition opening last<br />
month. Min Kim is awellestablished artist and based in Ohoka. She<br />
received 28 votes from the public ,ahead of anumber of other works that<br />
received around 20. Some 400 votes were cast by visitors to the<br />
exhibition over the last three weeks. The popular exhibition runs until<br />
tomorrow.<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>County Lionsis<br />
aiming to bring some festive<br />
cheertothe district and to<br />
put smiles on faces at the<br />
inaugural Christmas Festive<br />
Forest event in early<br />
December.<br />
Held in conjunction with<br />
the event centre, theservice<br />
club is calling for groups,<br />
businesses,organisations,<br />
schools and individuals to<br />
book aChristmas treesite.<br />
Artificial trees will be set<br />
up anddecorated on<br />
December3and willthen be<br />
judged, beforebeing opened<br />
to viewingfrom the public,<br />
schools and rest homesfrom<br />
2pm until 5pm.<br />
The followingday the<br />
festiveforest is open from<br />
10am until 8pm.<br />
Entertainment will be laid<br />
on from6.30pm and there<br />
will also be atree lighting<br />
show.<br />
The festive forestisopen<br />
from10amuntil 3pm on the<br />
final day.<br />

the new event was about<br />
bringing the community<br />
together and spreading some<br />
cheer.<br />
It was seen as community a<br />
gestureby the serviceclub<br />
rather than alucrative<br />
fundraiser.<br />
Any profits raised would<br />
be giventoalocal youth<br />
project.<br />
Mrs McAnulty said Covid<br />
19 had caused alot of stress,<br />
both financially and<br />
emotionally forfamilies this<br />
year, andthe festiveforest<br />
was about relaxing and<br />
celebratingChristmas.<br />
Tree sites in the<br />
auditoriumand other areas<br />
of the event centre cost $10 ,<br />
while stall sites in the foyer<br />
cost $30for all days.<br />
Entry cost has been<br />
deliberatelykeptlow,says<br />
Mrs McAnulty, andis$2per<br />
person or $5 for afamily.<br />
She hoped the event would<br />
attract more than 40 trees on<br />
displayand anumber of<br />
stalls.<br />
