Resiliencefundsupportslocalsports<br />
Sixteen play, active recreation and<br />
sports groups in Mid Canterbury are in<br />
the money and will share $135,332.16<br />
from Sport NZ’s community resilience<br />
fund.<br />
Some $15 million has now been<br />
distributed nationally in phase two of<br />
the fund, established to alleviate the<br />
financial impact of Covid19.<br />
The fund was increased by $5m due to<br />
the volume of applications received and<br />
2070 organisations have received money<br />
to assist with fixed and operational costs<br />
for the period July 1toSeptember 30.<br />
Sports sharing the funds locally<br />
include rugby, netball, rowing, croquet,<br />
hockey and softball.<br />
The <strong>Ashburton</strong> Rowing Club received<br />
$11,394 to cover insurance and audit<br />
costs for the year.<br />
The funding was important to the<br />
club as it neededtofollow Rowing NZ<br />
guidelinesprovided by Sport NZ that<br />
were based on Government guidelines<br />
specific to sporting environments,<br />
including on water, said <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
RowingClub treasurer Bruce Welch.<br />
Not following guidelines would limit<br />
the club’s abilitytohold regattas and<br />
would limit registrations and fees<br />
which the club reliedonfor its income,<br />
he said.<br />
Mid CanterburyNetball received<br />
$7283 from the fund,which will be used<br />
to cover fixed costs.<br />
Spokesperson Karla Newlands said<br />
the fundingwas ahuge relief to netball.<br />
‘‘With the shortened season our<br />
income from subscriptionsand various<br />
other funding platforms was reduced<br />
considerably, so this money relieved<br />
financialpressure on our overall<br />
operations.’’<br />
She said local netball was very<br />
grateful to the support from Sport<br />
Canterbury and nationally from the<br />
Government'sNZSport Recovery<br />
Package.<br />
Waireka Croquet Club received $1000<br />
in phaseone and $2<strong>12</strong>1.88 in phase two<br />
of the resilience funding.<br />

Allenton club saidthe fundingwouldbe<br />
usedtopay power, lawn maintenance<br />
and rent costs.<br />
The club was grateful because it had<br />
beenunable to do its usual fundraising<br />
due to the Covid19 lockdown.<br />
To help save costs going forward, the<br />
clubhad purchased its own mower and<br />
no longer paid the council to cut the<br />
croquet lawns, said Mrs Leath.<br />

Saturday.<br />
The fourman team has a<br />
combined age of 340George Crack<br />
is the oldest at 91, HaroldKemp is 90,<br />
Reg Diamond is 86 and Allan(Benny)<br />
Hillis73.<br />
They were out to settle ascore<br />
against afourthatincluded Murray<br />
Anderson, AlastairMackenzie, John<br />
Kewishand Min Hill; they said they<br />
were the young ones by comparison.<br />
The teams were taking part in the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>club’schampionship<br />
fours andhopingthe rain would stay<br />
awaylong enoughfor one to emerge<br />
the winner.<br />
Skip Benny wasbuying the beer if<br />
his Young Guns were victorious, but<br />
it wasn’t to be the YoungGuns went<br />
down<strong>12</strong>15.<br />
He said the fourenjoyed the<br />
camaraderie but were still serious<br />
about their bowls. Harold, as lead,<br />
bowled first, followed by George,Reg<br />
and Benny.Bennyhas the most<br />
bowls experience at 28 years, while<br />
the othershave all beenbowling for<br />
15 years.<br />
Benny said they were united by<br />
their sporting pasts andstillrelished<br />
the opportunity to practise their<br />
sporting skills.<br />
