Sixteen play, active recreation and
sports groups in Mid Canterbury are in
the money and will share $135,332.16
from Sport NZ’s community resilience
fund.
Some $15 million has now been
distributed nationally in phase two of
the fund, established to alleviate the
financial impact of Covid19.
The fund was increased by $5m due to
the volume of applications received and
2070 organisations have received money
to assist with fixed and operational costs
for the period July 1toSeptember 30.
Sports sharing the funds locally
include rugby, netball, rowing, croquet,
hockey and softball.
The Ashburton Rowing Club received
$11,394 to cover insurance and audit
costs for the year.
The funding was important to the
club as it neededtofollow Rowing NZ
guidelinesprovided by Sport NZ that
were based on Government guidelines
specific to sporting environments,
including on water, said Ashburton
RowingClub treasurer Bruce Welch.
Not following guidelines would limit
the club’s abilitytohold regattas and
would limit registrations and fees
which the club reliedonfor its income,
he said.
Mid CanterburyNetball received
$7283 from the fund, which will be used
to cover fixed costs.
Spokesperson Karla Newlands said
the fundingwas ahuge relief to netball.
‘‘With the shortened season our
income from subscriptionsand various
other funding platforms was reduced
considerably, so this money relieved
financialpressure on our overall
operations.’’
She said local netball was very
grateful to the support from Sport
Canterbury and nationally from the
Government'sNZSport Recovery
Package.
Waireka Croquet Club received $1000
in phaseone and $2121.88 in phase two
of the resilience funding.
Audrey Leathfrom the 55member
Allenton club saidthe fundingwouldbe
usedtopay power, lawn maintenance
and rent costs.
The club was grateful because it had
beenunable to do its usual fundraising
due to the Covid19 lockdown.
To help save costs going forward, the
clubhad purchased its own mower and
no longer paid the council to cut the
croquet lawns, said Mrs Leath.
