Exhibition showcases
district’s artists
THE ANNUAL Selwyn
Arts Heart Exhibition
sprung to life earlier this
month at the Rolleston
Community Centre.
It was attended by 280
people who visited from all
over Selwyn and Canterbury.
On display were 250
pieces of art made by artists
from the district.
The exhibition – supported
by the district council’s
Creative Communities
Fund – was open to artists
of any style and age.
It has hosted Canterbury
artist Henry Turner’s art
since he was 12, musical
instruments made out of
cake tins and the Selwyn
Embroiderer’s group.
Scheduled for April
next year, Selwyn Arts
Heart chairwoman Wendy
Rockhouse said she will
apply for the creative communities
fund again to
help cover the venue hire
and advertising expenses,
as she does every year.
“Without their funding,
we couldn’t run an exhibition.
Our exhibitions aren’t
money making exhibitions,
they’re held to give emerging
artists the opportunity
to participate in an exhibition,”
she said.
CREATIVE: Selwyn Arts Heart Exhibition
showcased 250 pieces created by artists in the
district.
Rockhouse has been
involved with Arts Heart
for 16 years. She is a firm
believer in art being good
for the soul.
Said Rockhouse: “I enjoy
seeing the new artists that
enter and the expression on
their face when they’ve sold
a piece of work. It brings
the community together,
it gives them a sense of
NEWS 19
well being. Art gives them
an avenue to express
themselves, they otherwise
might not have.”
To help with that, Arts
Heart only take 15 per cent
of the commission made
from the exhibition.
BACKYARD CRITTERS
A DELICATE little
moth endemic to Japan
is the azalea leaf miner
(Caloptilia azaleella).
Found almost worldwide
where its azalea host
is found, this brown
and yellow moth has a
wingspan of 10-13mm.
Moths often sit on their
posterior with front legs
stretched out beneath their
head. Adults lay eggs on
the underside of leaves by
the midrib.
When hatched, the
caterpillars are leaf miners
for the first half of their
larval life which creates a
blister on the underside
of the leaf. These mined
areas eventually turn a
characteristic brown. Once
mid-sized, larvae migrate
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a
new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims
to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living
things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found at
Moth from Japan found
almost around the globe
to the top of leaves, folding
them using silk to make a
refuge.
Foraging by larger larvae
create holes in leaves until
pupation occurs, with
adults emerging a week
later.
