Weedons back on track
with hard-fought win
WEEDONS have bounced
back after their quest for a
perfect Canterbury County
premier one-day season
was undone, by beating
Southbrook with form
bowler Sam Clarke snaring
another four-wicket haul.
Clarke’s 4/39 in the previous
round against Cheviot
proved immaterial but
his 4/20 on Saturday was
pivotal as Weedons won by
four wickets at Southbrook
Park.
Opting to bowl first on a
tricky wicket was justified
as the hosts were unable to
gain any traction through
their innings before being
dismissed for 130 in the
penultimate over; opener
Sam Bing top-scored with a
brisk 27 from 28 balls.
Weedons made a solid
start to their chase with
Todd Inness making a
well-timed 41 while fellow
opener Jayden McIntyre
played the anchor role with
a patient 17 from 75 deliveries
to guide the innings
into triple figures before he
exited in the 26th over.
Southbrook then claimed
three wickets for five runs
but Arnav Deb eased
Weedons’ nerves with an
unbeaten 19, featuring four
boundaries.
Teams were often depleted
by frontliners absent on
representative duty, though
Cheviot were able to fill any
voids comfortably thanks to
a stunning senior debut by
Ronan Dillon.
The 15-year-old claimed
5/38 from his maximum
allocation of nine overs
to help Cheviot secure a
14-run victory over winless
Lincoln during seventh
round action.
Dillon’s emergence
enabled the hosts to defend
214/8 at Cheviot Domain, as
Lincoln could only muster
200/6 from their 45 overs.
Weedons’ Sam Clarke bowls a quick delivery to
Southbrook’s Damian Hansen.
Earlier, Jack Hyde (46 off
67) and Ryan Ellis (55 off
87) set a strong foundation
for Cheviot before Scott
Burnett (42 off 27) round
off the innings.
Lincoln’s chase was built
around a 107-run opening
partnership between Hugh
Paterson (80 off 108) and
Cameron Powell (31 off 61)
before tight bowling escalated
the asking rate.
Sefton ground out a
tough 13-run win over
North Canterbury rivals
Oxford-Rangiora at Pearson
Park on the back of
quality batting by two club
stalwarts – Tim Harrison
and Nigel Granger.
Batting in the unfamiliar
position of second drop,
Harrison anchored Sefton’s
207/7 with an unbeaten
85, a knock that dovetailed
with a 125-run partnership
with Granger (59) for the
sixth wicket.
Oxford-Rangiora had
solid contributions from
Lachie Stove (67) and Luke
Waghorn (33) but tight
bowling – personified by
Todd Waller’s concession of
20 runs from nine overs –
left the target out of reach.
A depleted Leeston-
Southbridge were unable
to compensate for the
unavailability of rep players
as Darfield eclipsed the visitors’
103/9 inside 16 overs.
Liam Foulkes set the tone
for a dominant triumph
with 6/14 from nine overs
as a makeshift line-up were
rolled in 27.1 overs though
Leeston-Southbridge were
still second on the competition
ladder behind
Weedons on net run rate.
Ohoka had the bye.
METRO
Look out for
Metro changes
Next week, Metro passengers will see
some timetable changes and different buses
on some routes.
New public transport contracts coming
into effect on Sunday 29 November bring
with them a host of benefits. Passengers in
the western and eastern suburbs will enjoy
increased frequency on Route 3 (previously
the Purple Line), while new electric and low
emission vehicles are gradually coming into
service across the network in the coming
months.
Buses may look different
The change in contracts sees many
services change to a different operator. The
consequence for passengers is that different
buses will be used on many routes from
Sunday 29 November.
If you are used to seeing a Red Bus
branded vehicle on your route, it may now
be a Go Bus branded vehicle instead, and
vice versa. Your bus might also be in the new
teal livery as it continues to roll out across
the network.
Timetables changes from Sunday
Environment Canterbury senior manager
public transport Stewart Gibbon says this
is the second of three stages of timetable
changes.
“We’ve phased the changes to reduce the
impact on our customers,” says Gibbon.
“The majority of changes being made this
month are necessary to implement the new
operator contracts and to ensure compliance
with changes to the Employment Relations
Act.”
Gibbon advises passengers to check now if
their timetable or operator is changing on 29
November, and plan ahead.
“Our Journey Planner tool allows you to
forward plan – you can plan your trip for 29
November onwards to see if the timetable
changes impact your usual journey,” he says.
A full list of all changes, including the
operator for each service and the timetable
from 29 November onwards, is available at
