What’s the big deal?
It’s not just about living the dream. Families are
looking for space to custom-build their ideal lifestyle,
and many are doing it with help. Janelle Pritchard,
Marketing Manager for Verdeco Park, says: “There
are plenty of multi-generational homes going in. In
some cases, older parents are helping young families
to fund the build and then living in a second flat on
the property. They then have company as they grow
older. The bonus here, is that changes earmarked in
the Selwyn District Council plan mean these flats can
soon be rented out, creating a revenue stream for the
family.
85% of buyers in Verdeco Park are from the Selwyn
area, and are usually those who are onto their 3rd or
4th homes. There are also some overseas returnees,
and rural farmers who are looking to downsize but
aren’t prepared for a full city move.
What to look out for
Whether you’re using a home build company on
a smaller lifestyle section or using an architect and
private builder for your custom dream home, there
are things you still need to consider. Most important
are the services available to your boundary—power,
water, and waste. Lifestyle blocks typically have a
longer distance from house to boundary as well, so
you may need to budget for eco pumps to remove
your waste. In Verdeco Park, you’ll also get broadband
whereas other developments might only offer the
copper network. If you’re making the jump, you’ll
already have a good idea of what you want, just
make sure you check what’s already there and what
you still need. And be sure to keep adequate budget
for landscaping—there will likely be rules around
completion that you need to follow—and adhere to
