$8000 bollards makes shops safer
• By Matt Slaughter
LINCOLN Convenience Store
owners Holly and Murray have
had two cars crash through their
store in the last few years.
It has come as a big relief for
the couple that bollards have
now been installed to protect
their store and others in the
Gerald St block of shops.
The 10 bollards, which cost
$8000, were jointly funded.
The block of shops’ landlord
John Giltrap put $4000 of his
own money towards them
and the other $4000 came
from the Lincoln Community
Committee’s discretionary
response fund.
Murray said the first crash
happened about three years ago
when a man in a four-wheeldrive
hit the gutter outside of the
store, got a fright and stepped
on the accelerator instead of the
break.
No one was hurt but said Murray:
“He buried his four-wheeldrive
right up in the back of
the shop. He could have wound
down the window and we could
have served him.
“It made an absolute mess and
it was scary,” he said
The second incident last year
was when a car was left in gear
and travelled forward through
the shop’s entrance. The damage
was not as bad this time but he
said both crashes forced the store
to close for a few days, leading to
loss of income.
Murray said it was lucky that
no one in the shop was injured
on both occasions and a relief
that no one at the block of shops
will be in future thanks to the
bollards.
“We’re just so pleased to have
them because it’s dangerous for
us.
“It’s safety, of course, for us
and people who work here and
for our customers,” he said.
Said Holly: “That’s a lot of
relief. In both of the accidents,
we were so lucky no one got
hit.”
Giltrap said he wasn’t willing
to wait for another crash to happen
and this is why he decided to
help pay half of the cost for the
bollards.
“There’s been two near misses,
it was time to put a protection
in.”
Community committee
secretary Pauline Hayes said
its decision to put some of its
discretionary funds towards the
DAMAGE: The four-wheel-drive vehicle
that crashed into the store three years
bollards was because “it was an
accident waiting to happen.”
“It was a health a safety issue
and we had been approached by
residents and also some of the
people who had their businesses
there in that block of shops.
“The community committee
took it on board and decided
to allocate some of our
discretionary funds towards it,”
she said.
