Focus on help for the elderly<br />
Supporting older adults was thefocusofa<br />
recentcommunity meeting at Waikuku<br />
Beach Hall.<br />
The meeting was organisedby<br />
Waimakariri Agefriendly community<br />
facilitator Madeleine Burdon in response<br />
to concerns aboutthe health and wellbeing<br />
of older residentsinWaikuku Beach.<br />
‘‘There seemedlittle knowledge of what<br />
services were availableand how to get in<br />
touch with them, whetheritbeamedical<br />
allowance, transport to services or<br />
emergency alarms,’’ Madeleinesays.<br />
‘‘The response from agencies invited<br />
was very positive and anumber of them<br />
have representation on our localaccess,<br />
agefriendly and health advisory groups.’’<br />
Partner agencies which attended the<br />
meeting included staff fromthe Pegasus<br />
Medical Centre,Pegasus Health,<br />
Presbyterian Support, the Ministry of<br />
SocialDevelopment,the police, Grey<br />
Power, Budgeting Services <strong>North</strong><br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong> and Citizens AdviceBureau.<br />
Other organisations such as Age<br />
Concern, SeniorChefand the Waimakariri<br />
librariesstaff sent information about<br />
resources available for older residents.<br />

community, but considered we should<br />
make atime whenthe people<br />
experiencing the difficulties were more<br />
likelyand/or able to attend,’’ Madeleine<br />
says.<br />
‘‘It wasalso important to ask what were<br />
the difficulties being experienced bothin<br />
staying well and in being connected in the<br />
community.’’<br />
A‘‘brightideas box’’ where peoplecould<br />
put in ideas for activities received agood<br />
response, includingsuggestions for a<br />
regular cuppa and apicnic.<br />
