FOUNDATION update Backpack Giveaway in Partnership with Wireless Vision & Community Choice Credit Union On November 4, the Chaldean Community Foundation hosted a backpack giveaway in collaboration with Wireless Vision and Community Choice Credit Union. More than 230 kits of personal protective equipment (PPE) and 500 backpacks were distributed to families with school-aged children. Free Flu Shot Clinic On October 25, CCF hosted a free flu shot clinic at Holy Martyrs Chaldean Catholic Church. More than 70 flu shots were administered during the three Sunday masses. A PPE kit was provided to each of those that received a flu shot. The Ascension Primary Care Clinic at the Chaldean Community Foundation will continue to administer flu shots to both insured and uninsured patients to help fight COVID-19. Through the generosity of w3r Consulting, the Nona Family, Drs. Nathima and Peter Atchoo Family, and the Abdulkarim and Jameela Sesi Memorial Scholarship, 20 students will be awarded with scholarships this year totaling $52,000. The CCF received more than 100 applicants this year! The CCF is committed to developing a continuing scholarship program to benefit students in need for years to come. Over the course of the day, more than 300 bags of PPE and various other goodies were distributed. Celebrating 5 years at 3601 15 Mile Road On November 10, the Chaldean Community Foundation celebrated the 5-year anniversary of the move from 4171 15 Mile Road to 3601 15 Mile Road. The CCF continues to address and serve the needs of the refugee, immigrant and greater community. In less than five years, they’ve added an additional 19,000 square feet to the facility, operating out of a building that is 25 times the size of its original location. Iraq ratifies new election law, paving way for early vote BY QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq’s president ratified on Thursday a new election law aimed at giving political independents a better chance of winning seats in parliament, paving the way for early elections next year. President Barham Saleh stressed the need for free, fair and transparent balloting that would restore the Iraqi citizens’ confidence in the legitimacy of the process. The new law changes each of the country’s 18 provinces into several electoral districts and prevents parties from running on unified lists, which has in the past helped them easily sweep all the seats in a specific province. Instead, the seats would go to whoever gets the most votes in the electoral districts. Drafting a new election law has been a key demand of the hundreds of thousands of protesters who have been taking to the streets in Baghdad and the predominantly Shiite south since last year. The protesters have called for an end to endemic corruption by a political class that is largely seen as having squandered Iraq’s resources through greed and mismanagement over the past years. The protests were met with a heavy military crackdown and hundreds were killed. The Iraqi president said that although the new law was not perfect, it signaled progress and had the potential to enable future reforms. He called for the quick fulfillment of remaining conditions required to hold elections, including biometric voter registration and reforming the electoral commission. The 329-member chamber was elected in May 2018. The vote is held every four years, but the protesters have been demanding early elections. Meanwhile, in Diyala province, north of Baghdad, at least three women were killed and three policemen were wounded in twin blasts on Thursday, according to a security statement. The Security Media Cell, affiliated with the armed forces, said the women died when a motorcycle bomb exploded, while the policemen died in a second explosion that went off when they arrived at the scene of the first blast. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Fighters loyal to the Islamic State group, which was defeated in Iraq in late 2017, have recently stepped up attacks in the area.
