JONO KITT’S mission to get
more people on their bikes has
paid off.
The Inner City East cycles
group facilitator is known for
going the extra mile for the
cycling community. Because
of this, he was nominated as a
Page 6
recipient at the Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community
Service Awards.
The grass roots organisation
aims to get people on
low-incomes to cycle by fixing
up their old bikes for free, and
giving away restored bikes.
The group regularly meet
for repair workshops, where
Described as a smiling, nonjudgemental
Naval Point
development
A $27 million plan to
redevelop Lyttelton’s Naval
Point has been given the
go-ahead by the Banks Peninsula
Community Board.
The Naval Point Development
Plan, which was developed in
partnership with Te Hapū o
Ngāti Wheke (Rāpaki) Rūnanga,
includes an expanded public boat
ramp, reorganised waterfront and
new breakwater.
The board also has requested
city council staff start working
on a leasing plan for all Naval
Point users and recommended
the city council approve the
closure of the Magazine Bay
marina, once existing licences
expire or are terminated according
to their licence terms and
conditions.
This will go to a future council
meeting, with the date still to be
set.
Board chairwoman Tori
Peden said approving the
Naval Point plan, which is an
overall vision for the area and
not detailed design, is a
significant step forward in
improving the area for the
many users of Naval Point
and the wider public.
RECOGNISING OUR COMMUNITY HEROES
SOUTHERN VIEW
People in the Linwood-Central-Heathcote area have been acknowledged for their great service to the
community. Today Southern View profiles who they are.
- Jim Le Comte
Jim Le Comte has been
a member of Canterbury
Neighbourhood Support since
its inception over 20 years ago.
He has been the co-ordinator
of the Suffolk St group for most
of that time. Jim has a strong
community focus and has been
instrumental in making his
street a safe, caring and more
connected place to live in.
He has achieved this by
welcoming new people into the
area; checking the welfare of
neighbours both young (with
children) and elderly, arranging
support if needed, providing
the link between neighbours
and working alongside the local
Neighbourhood Policing Team
to name a few.
- Doug Pratt and Colin
Evans
Doug Pratt has provided
technical support, treasurer role
and president role for Sumner
Theatre Group since 1997.
Former president Colin Evans
has also worked tirelessly both
on and off the stage, as actor,
stage manager and producer.
But in the last two years, they
both poured thousands of hours
into getting the company into
the new Sumner Community
Centre.
WELL-DESERVED: The Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Service Awards
recipients, who were recognised for going the extra mile for their community.
- John Marsh
John volunteers his time,
his effort and his invaluable
life skills to The Duncan
Foundation. John is the
voluntary co-ordinator and is
also key in re-establishing the
Avoca Valley Stream Restoration
Project, and coordinating
volunteers with revegetation
planting in Birdsey Reserve –
Heathcote Valley.
For the last five years, John
has spent two to three days a
week on-site including a regular
weekly working bee on a Friday
(15-25 hrs per week). John’s key
tasks include planting, releasing
around plants (3000 plants),
watering, and track building.
- Tamsin Page
Tamsin has contributed a
huge number of hours to the
Heathcote Valley School’s
Enviro Education projects over
the past six years. She has been
a leader of the recent Grow
Otautahi display, garden to table
initiatives, vegetable garden
projects, and working bees.
She is also a huge supporter
of school sports including
coaching netball teams and
running the Heathcote Valley
Netball club. At the annual
school gala, she leads the food
section, and she was also a part
of the pool fundraising group
and has also been a key member
of the school’s Strategic Finance
Group.
- Rosie Smyth
Rosie has been an active
volunteer at the Christchurch
Vegan Society since the mid
2000s. Since then, she has sat
on countless stalls that have
been set up in the community
and at special events. She has
worked in the kitchen doing
food prep and dishes for cookery
demonstrations and shared
meals.
Rosie has also served on subcommittees
such as the Vegan
Expo sub-committee and the
Vegan Ball subcommittee. She is
a thoughtful and valued member
of such groups and can always be
relied on to do what she says she
will. She always wants to help
and she goes above and beyond
when the need arises.
Bernie has been registered
as a tag spotter volunteer
since February 2012. All
members of the community,
such as residents, visitors, and
tourists and those people that
pass through it, benefit from
having a city that is graffiti-free.
This contributes to the reduction
in the incidence of crime
and improves perceptions of
community safety.
Tracing a lost grandmother
• By Matt Slaughter
HALF A world away in England,
Barbara Hind is on the search
for more information about her
grandmother Annie Spring, who
lived in Woolston.
Hind is 74 and has never been
to New Zealand but wants to
know more about the 30 years
Annie spent here.
Annie moved to New Zealand
from Maryport, Cumberland,
England, some time between
1921 and 1928.
She married John Spring after
arriving.
The couple lived at 8 Ferry Rd
for a period from 1928.
Said Hind: “She obviously met
John Spring sometime before
1928 as the records for that year
show them living together at 8
Ferry Rd, Canterbury. By 1935
they were shown as married,
but I have not been able to find a
record.”
The couple lived in Weedons,
Selwyn from about 1946 until
John’s death in 1957. Annie
moved back to England in 1959.
They had previously also lived
in Timaru and other parts of
Canterbury.
“The records always show
John as a labourer, although
in 1946 when they were living
in Weedons he is shown as a
farmer.
“Annie was always shown as
a housewife. They lived there
[Weedons] until John’s death,
aged 70, in 1957. I have not
been able to find a record of any
children.”
After Annie died in 1961, her
will left everything to Muriel
Feast, the wife of Harry Feast of
Rolleston, and James Lancaster
of Lincoln, Selwyn.
“I came across her will while
doing family history research
but I have no idea who the two
beneficiaries were. I know nothing
of her friends,” said Hind.
FAMILY HISTORY:
Annie Spring lived
on Ferry Rd in the
early-1900s and her
grandaughter in
England Barbara
Hind wants to
know more about
her.
Annie was married in the
United Kingdom, she had children,
one of whom was Hind’s
mother, but the marriage broke
down soon after World War 1.
Hind presumes this was why she
emigrated to New Zealand.
Annie died at the age of 76 in
Keswick, England.
Game to test your bin waste knowledge
PEOPLE ARE being invited to
play an interactive online game
that will test their knowledge
of what items belong in the red,
yellow and green wheelie bins.
The game, which people can
play on their smartphones and
online has been developed by city
council staff and is the latest tool
in the ongoing campaign to help
people bin good.
The game requires players to
drag selected items into either the
red, green or yellow bin.If they
put the item in the right bin, they
earn points. If they put the item in
the wrong bin, the bin shakes and
they get an X on the scoreboard.
The correct bin will light up.
The items used in the game
were selected because they are
ones that people often get confused
about and put in the wrong
bin.
Said council resource recovery
manager Ross Trotter. “The
success of our kerbside rubbish
and recycling service depends on
people putting the right stuff in
the right bin. This new game is
a fun, interactive way of teaching
people about what bin they
should use for different items.
“The contents of the green
wheelie bin get processed and
turned into compost. That cannot
happen if there is too much nonorganic
material in the bin. Likewise,
the contents of the yellow
wheelie bin cannot be recycled if
non-recyclable items are included.
“Our goal is to minimise the
amount of waste going to landfill
so that’s why we need people to
put the right stuff in the right bin.
“If you are confused about what
goes in each of the bins, give the
game a try. I also recommend that
you use our updated wheelie bin
app. It has a great search function
which you can use if you
are uncertain about which bin a
particular items belongs in. All
you have to do is enter the name
of the item you want to dispose
of and it will tell you which bin to
put it in.’’
GREAT NEW READS INSTORE
Meghan Misunderstood
by Sean Smith
Meghan Misunderstood is a pioneering book that sets the
record straight on the most talked about, unfairly vilified and
misrepresented woman in the world. Meghan was eleven when she
first advocated for women’s rights; a teenager when she worked in
a soup kitchen feeding the homeless; a popular actress when she
campaigned for clean water in Africa and passionately championed
gender equality in a speech to a United Nations Women’s
Conference. Even before she met Prince Harry, hers was an
extraordinarily accomplished life. Now, Sean Smith, the UK’s leading
celebrity biographer, pulls no punches as he reveals the remarkable
and powerful story of this self-made, intelligent American woman
with a strong social conscience who has made such an impact on
our lives.
The Untold Story of the British Family Firm that Became
a Global Brand - reebok
By Joe Foster
The remarkable story of how Joe Foster developed Reebok into one of
the world’s most famous sports brands, having started from a small
factory in Bolton.
Since the late 19th century, the Foster family had been hand-making
running shoes, supplying the likes of Eric Liddell and Harold
Abrahams - later immortalised in the film Chariots of Fire - as well
as providing boots to most Football League clubs. But a family feud
between Foster’s father and uncle about the direction of their business
led to Joe and his brother Jeff setting up a new company, inspired by
the success of Adidas and Puma, and so Reebok was born.
No Time Like The Future
An Optimist Considers Mortality
By Michael J Fox
The entire world knows Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage
sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future; as Alex P. Keaton in
Family Ties; as Mike Flaherty in Spin City; and through numerous other
movie roles and guest appearances on shows such as The Good Wife
and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally
engaged in Parkinson’s advocacy work, raising global awareness of the
disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J. Fox Foundation
for Parkinson’s Research, the world’s leading non-profit funder of PD
science. His two previous bestselling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always
Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the
while exhibiting his iconic optimism. His new memoir reassesses this
outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges.
Down South
In Down South, writer Bruce Ansley goes on a journey back to his
beloved South Island.
From Curio Bay to Golden Bay, in Down South writer Bruce Ansley
sets off on a vast expedition across the South Island, Te Waipounamu,
visiting the places and people who hold clues to the south’s famous
character. Not so very long ago, the South Island had most of New
Zealand’s people and just about all of the money. Gold miners found
fortunes in the hills and rivers, sheep barons straddled mountains,
valleys and plains. Wealthy southerners ruled the government. Where
now lies the South Island’s golden fleece? And what is its future.
Speed Kings
Australia and New Zealand’s quest to win the Indy 500,
the world’s greatest motor race. By John Smailes
The fascinating, definitive story of Australia and New Zealand’s quest to
win the world’s greatest motor race. Winning the Indianapolis 500, the
greatest spectacle in motorsport, has been a quest for Australians and
New Zealanders since the first race in 1911. Seventeen have tried and two
have succeeded: Scott Dixon in 2008 and Will Power in 2018. Rupert
Jeffkins, Australia’s original speed king, entered the first Indy 500 and on
his second attempt in 1912 came within five kilometres of victory. He and
Italian Ralph De Palma created legend when they pushed their car to the
finish line after it blew up while leading. Speed Kings tells Jeffkins’ full story
for the first time. it tells the story of the Australian and New Zealand drivers,
team owners, engineers, even commentators who’ve made the Brickyard
ESTUARY MATTERS
Sea captain one of
Woolston’s biggest fans
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust is a non-profit organisation formed to
protect one of New Zealand’s most important coastal wetlands. Each week,
board members will discuss matters regarding the estuary, its rich history and
what makes it unique. This week Bill Simpson writes about the man behind
Charlesworth Wetland Reserve
CHARLESWORTH Wetland
Reserve on the edge of the
estuary is a living memorial
to one of Woolston’s biggest
fans.
Captain William
Charlesworth was a sea
captain trading between
Australia, India and England
but on his first voyage to
Christchurch in the mid-
1850s he instantly fell in love
with the new town.
Within days, he had
purchased land on Ferry Rd
near the steam wharf on the
Heathcote River.
He acquired other properties
including three hotels in
Lyttelton, pastoral land along
the estuary edge and urban
properties on the corner of
Kilmore and Madras Sts.
He named his Ferry Rd
property Saxon Farm (his
trading ship was the Royal
Saxon) and built himself a
grand house which he called
Saxon Villa.
Newspapers referred to him
as a gentleman and he had
local status as a sea captain
but he kept a low profile in local
affairs. His only recorded
public position was as a member
of the Woolston School
Committee.
Across the Tasman,
Charlesworth is known as
the man who first bought
elephants, tigers and bears to
Australia.
He collected the
animals in India and
then sold them to
colonists in Hobart,
Melbourne and Sydney. One
of his elephants, Tommy,
toured widely within
Australia and become quite
famous.
After buying land here,
Charlesworth persuaded siblings
to come to New Zealand
with their families, but his
only child, Frederick Towns
Charlesworth, died at the age
of 23 from diphtheria.
Charlesworth died in 1875
aged 60 of blood poisoning
from an accident while chopping
a tree down near his
house.
Project to improve aircraft
earns student award
REWARDING: Ara
Institute of Canterbury
student Joshua
Bensberg received
the top award at the
institute’s engineering
showcase. He is with
tutor Graeme Harris.
EXPLORING methods to
improve the performance
of aircraft has paid off for
Joshua Bensberg.
The student was surprised
to win both the
best project – mechanical
engineering prize and
industry choice for his
coaxial rotor configuration
project at the Ara Institute
of Canterbury engineering
showcase.
Bensberg will be completing
his bachelor of
engineering technology
this year. His project for
Woolston company, TEK-
MIK, consists of rotor-craft
blade designs to improve
aircraft performance efficiency
He said that the problem
was a tough one.
“Because there’s currently
no definitive design
for rotors. It’s kind of a
matter of what you’re actually
aiming to achieve,”
Bensberg said.
“If you want a certain
diameter of the rotor
blades, you will need to
have certain design characteristics
within its length to
perform better.
“If you prioritise one
criteria, you might have to
sacrifice another.”
Using a drone model of
the company’s “AirScooter”
vehicle, he applied
his knowledge of blade
element and blade element
momentum theory to create
a universal design tool
for TEKMIK.
They can utilise this
when considering optimal
blade parameters for their
vehicles, taking into account
their planned use
and technical specifications.
“The aim of my client is
to create UAVs for multiple
applications, such as for
surveillance, the delivery
of light items, agricultural
purposes and so on,”
Bensberg said.
“I created a design tool
in Excel spreadsheet, so
what my client will be able
to now do is input their
desired specifications -
weight, diameter, speed,
the engine; and the tool
will be able to output a
blade design.
“Then we can compare
all the different designs,
to decide which would be
best.”
While Bensberg “had no
clue” what the outcome of
his study would be when
he first arrived at Ara, he
now hoped to continue
working with TEKMIK.
“That would make me
happy. I’ll be delivering my
findings to them, and I’ll
definitely be answering a
lot of questions for everyone
so that they can understand
it and, you never
SOUTHERN VIEW
know – I could be hired by
them,” he said.
In the years to come,
Bensberg sees his interests
remaining in design.
“I’m particularly interested
in the design process;
designing components and
designing machines. The
overall idea of ‘what can be
made?’ lets the imagination
flow.”
Ara senior lecturer and
project supervisor Graeme
Harris said Bensberg’s
project displayed a high
level of numerical analysis,
modelling and practical
testing to verify data.
“Josh hit the ground
running, came up with
his own ideas and ran a
good project. Josh worked
well with the industry
client and showed a
good understanding of
an unfamiliar area of
engineering,” he said.
Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
Christmas means
dinners, parties &
bbq’s and we can
supply all your
meat needs
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly
cream!
Chantilly
Cream
You will need:
• 1 x bottle of cream
• ½ tsp vanilla essence
• 1 tbsp icing sugar to
sweeten
Method:
Put cream, vanilla essence
and icing sugar in a bowl and
whisk until light and fluffy with
softly formed peaks. Cover and
refrigerate until ready to serve.
This one is not just for the kids – the sweetness of the bananas makes these
pancakes scrumptious and a delicious, healthy breakfast hit for everyone!
• 4-5 bananas (soft enough to mash)
• 4 eggs
• ½ cup rice flour
• 2 tbsp whole linseed
• grated lemon rind
• juice from 1 lemon
1. Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl.
2. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, linseed, salt
and lemon ingredients.
3. Add flour and mix to a smooth batter.
4. Cook pancakes in frypan on one side
Shops bursting with
festive gift ideas
The countdown to the big day is well underway, so making up the
Christmas gift list will now be a top priority… if you haven’t already done so.
Finding those special gifts and stocking fillers as
well as the Christmas treats for the table is so easy at
our city’s malls and shopping centres, where the shops
are bursting with festive merchandise.
Every woman likes to receive body pampering
gifts, and there is a huge selection of these priced
to suit all budgets at the many pharmacies and gift
shops around the city. Perfume is another favourite
and again there is a wide selection to choose from,
ranging from exciting new releases to the well-known
fragrances that have stood the test of time. Lingerie,
jewellery, fashion accessories, homewares and decor
items – there’s no end to the ideas for the women on
the list.
The men are equally well catered for, from the
sophisticated metro-male boyfriends, to the car-crazy
brothers and the DIY enthusiast and keen gardener
husbands and dads. Choose from clothing, books,
tools, personal grooming items and gadgets to put a
smile on their face on Christmas morning.
Speaking of smiles, nothing gives families more joy
than seeing the excitement of the children opening
their presents. Whether they are delivered by Santa
or snuck under the tree by mum and dad, the cuddly
toys, games, dolls and building blocks, the candy
canes, toy trucks and pretty dresses currently filling
the shops will bring squeals of sheer happiness from
the smallest family members.
The tweens and teens usually have their own ideas
about what they want for Christmas, so the gift cards
offered by a wide range of retailers are the perfect way
to please.
