RECOGNISING OUR COMMUNITY HEROES<br />

SOUTHERN VIEW<br />

People in the Linwood-Central-Heathcote area have been acknowledged for their great service to the<br />

community. Today <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>View</strong> profiles who they are.<br />

- Jim Le Comte<br />

Jim Le Comte has been<br />

a member of Canterbury<br />

Neighbourhood Support since<br />

its inception over 20 years ago.<br />

He has been the co-ordinator<br />

of the Suffolk St group for most<br />

of that time. Jim has a strong<br />

community focus and has been<br />

instrumental in making his<br />

street a safe, caring and more<br />

connected place to live in.<br />

He has achieved this by<br />

welcoming new people into the<br />

area; checking the welfare of<br />

neighbours both young (with<br />

children) and elderly, arranging<br />

support if needed, providing<br />

the link between neighbours<br />

and working alongside the local<br />

Neighbourhood Policing Team<br />

to name a few.<br />

- Doug Pratt and Colin<br />

Evans<br />

Doug Pratt has provided<br />

technical support, treasurer role<br />

and president role for Sumner<br />

Theatre Group since 1997.<br />

Former president Colin Evans<br />

has also worked tirelessly both<br />

on and off the stage, as actor,<br />

stage manager and producer.<br />

But in the last two years, they<br />

both poured thousands of hours<br />

into getting the company into<br />

the new Sumner Community<br />

Centre.<br />

recipients, who were recognised for going the extra mile for their community.<br />

- John Marsh<br />

John volunteers his time,<br />

his effort and his invaluable<br />

life skills to The Duncan<br />

Foundation. John is the<br />

voluntary co-ordinator and is<br />

also key in re-establishing the<br />

Avoca Valley Stream Restoration<br />

Project, and coordinating<br />

volunteers with revegetation<br />

planting in Birdsey Reserve –<br />

Heathcote Valley.<br />

For the last five years, John<br />

has spent two to three days a<br />

week on-site including a regular<br />

weekly working bee on a Friday<br />

(15-25 hrs per week). John’s key<br />

tasks include planting, releasing<br />

around plants (3000 plants),<br />

watering, and track building.<br />

- Tamsin Page<br />

Tamsin has contributed a<br />

huge number of hours to the<br />

Heathcote Valley School’s<br />

Enviro Education projects over<br />

the past six years. She has been<br />

a leader of the recent Grow<br />

Otautahi display, garden to table<br />

initiatives, vegetable garden<br />

projects, and working bees.<br />

She is also a huge supporter<br />

of school sports including<br />

coaching netball teams and<br />

running the Heathcote Valley<br />

Netball club. At the annual<br />

school gala, she leads the food<br />

section, and she was also a part<br />

of the pool fundraising group<br />

and has also been a key member<br />

of the school’s Strategic Finance<br />

Group.<br />

- Rosie Smyth<br />

Rosie has been an active<br />

volunteer at the Christchurch<br />

Vegan Society since the mid<br />

2000s. Since then, she has sat<br />

on countless stalls that have<br />

been set up in the community<br />

and at special events. She has<br />

worked in the kitchen doing<br />

food prep and dishes for cookery<br />

demonstrations and shared<br />

meals.<br />

Rosie has also served on subcommittees<br />

such as the Vegan<br />

Expo sub-committee and the<br />

Vegan Ball subcommittee. She is<br />

a thoughtful and valued member<br />

of such groups and can always be<br />

relied on to do what she says she<br />

will. She always wants to help<br />

and she goes above and beyond<br />

when the need arises.<br />
