RECOGNISING OUR COMMUNITY HEROES
SOUTHERN VIEW
People in the Linwood-Central-Heathcote area have been acknowledged for their great service to the
community. Today Southern View profiles who they are.
- Jim Le Comte
Jim Le Comte has been
a member of Canterbury
Neighbourhood Support since
its inception over 20 years ago.
He has been the co-ordinator
of the Suffolk St group for most
of that time. Jim has a strong
community focus and has been
instrumental in making his
street a safe, caring and more
connected place to live in.
He has achieved this by
welcoming new people into the
area; checking the welfare of
neighbours both young (with
children) and elderly, arranging
support if needed, providing
the link between neighbours
and working alongside the local
Neighbourhood Policing Team
to name a few.
- Doug Pratt and Colin
Evans
Doug Pratt has provided
technical support, treasurer role
and president role for Sumner
Theatre Group since 1997.
Former president Colin Evans
has also worked tirelessly both
on and off the stage, as actor,
stage manager and producer.
But in the last two years, they
both poured thousands of hours
into getting the company into
the new Sumner Community
Centre.

recipients, who were recognised for going the extra mile for their community.
- John Marsh
John volunteers his time,
his effort and his invaluable
life skills to The Duncan
Foundation. John is the
voluntary co-ordinator and is
also key in re-establishing the
Avoca Valley Stream Restoration
Project, and coordinating
volunteers with revegetation
planting in Birdsey Reserve –
Heathcote Valley.
For the last five years, John
has spent two to three days a
week on-site including a regular
weekly working bee on a Friday
(15-25 hrs per week). John’s key
tasks include planting, releasing
around plants (3000 plants),
watering, and track building.
- Tamsin Page
Tamsin has contributed a
huge number of hours to the
Heathcote Valley School’s
Enviro Education projects over
the past six years. She has been
a leader of the recent Grow
Otautahi display, garden to table
initiatives, vegetable garden
projects, and working bees.
She is also a huge supporter
of school sports including
coaching netball teams and
running the Heathcote Valley
Netball club. At the annual
school gala, she leads the food
section, and she was also a part
of the pool fundraising group
and has also been a key member
of the school’s Strategic Finance
Group.
- Rosie Smyth
Rosie has been an active
volunteer at the Christchurch
Vegan Society since the mid
2000s. Since then, she has sat
on countless stalls that have
been set up in the community
and at special events. She has
worked in the kitchen doing
food prep and dishes for cookery
demonstrations and shared
meals.
Rosie has also served on subcommittees
such as the Vegan
Expo sub-committee and the
Vegan Ball subcommittee. She is
a thoughtful and valued member
of such groups and can always be
relied on to do what she says she
will. She always wants to help
and she goes above and beyond
when the need arises.
