PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP Funding recipients gather By SHELLEY TOPP This year’s MainPower Community Fund recipients have been treated to morning tea by the North Canterbury communityowned lines company. The morning tea was held at the company’s head office in Fernside last week. All 67 groups that received a donation from the fund during the year were invited. MainPower chief executive Andy Lester said the company could not hold acelebratory event in April for recipients from the first funding round because of Covid19. ‘‘What ayear it has been,’’ he said. ‘‘We play an essential role in keeping the region ticking, by providing asafe, secure supply of electricity to all our homes, schools and businesses. ‘‘But we believe our responsibility extends beyond providing this, to being positive, contributing members of all the communities of North Canterbury, and part of what we do in this area is to provide funding support to arange of initiatives, events and projects in the region.’’ The community fund was established in 2015 and has grown from one annual funding round with $10,000 available to two funding rounds this year, with atotal of $60,000 available. ‘‘In total we have supported around 150 groups and schools, which translates to alot of positives for North Canterbury,’’ Mr Lester said. All of the fund recipients are decided by votes cast by North Canterbury people. ‘‘The great thing about the community fund for us is that it gives our community achance to have their say about where a good portion of our sponsorship funding is directed. ‘‘Here today we have groups aimed at benefiting the region’s youth, supporting our natural environment and looking out for our community’s most vulnerable. ‘‘On behalf of MainPower, I’d like to congratulate you all and acknowledge the efforts behind the work you do and the impact it has.’’ Carols in the Park Join the KaiapoiCombined Churches and the Kaiapoi BrassBandfor aChristmas celebrationfrom 5pm on Sunday,December 13, at TrousselotPark,Kaiapoi.
