Penguins make asplash

The Waimakariri district has
been included in apublic art
trailofcolourful penguins to
raisecash for theCholmondeley
Children’s Centre.
The Wild in Art Trailincludes
50 largepenguins sponsored by
companies and decorated by
established and emerging
artists,along with70smaller
penguins,decorated by school
pupils as part of the Pop Up
Penguins Learning Programme.
The penguins highlight
themes including climate
change, community, Antarctica,
creativity innovation and
exploration.
They are mostly in
Christchurch but fourofthe
penguins,two of the larger
sculptures and two smaller
ones,have been installed in
Waimakariri.
One of the largersculptures,
Kia Manawaroa,byartist
Morgan Mathews­Hale, is on the
frontlawn of the Waimakariri
District Council servicecentre.
The other larger sculpture,
BirdsofaFeather,bymembers
of the NEST Arts Collective in
Amberley,isoutside the Port
and Eagle Brew Pub in Kaiapoi.
The smaller sculptures are
inside the Rangiora and
Kaiapoi libraries,with artwork
by Ashgrove, Rangiora Borough,
Southbrook, Kaiapoi North and
Ohokaschoolpupils.
The birds will be displayed
for nineweeks beforebeing
auctioned forthe children’s
centre in GovernorsBay.

Busy year
for Sallies

The Rangiora Salvation
Army has worked through
abusy year.
Its food bank has seen
steady demandthrough the
year,while its family store
‘‘meets arealneed in the
community’’,says retired
Salvation Army officer
Gordon Daly,who has been
filling in thismonth.
‘‘It’s been abit of a
muddly year, as it has been
for mostpeople.The food
bank was busy during
lockdown and it’s been
pretty steady since.
‘‘We haven’t beenrun off
our feet,but there’s stillan
ongoingneed. Iwould say,
overall,the demand has
been about the same as last
year,except for during
lockdown when it was
really tough for alot of
people.’’
Each year, more than 300
families receive at least
one food parcel from the
Rangiora SalvationArmy.
The communityhas been
getting behind the
Salvation Army as it looks
to providesome Christmas
cheertostruggling
families.

130 bears donated, he says.
