The publicwill get achance to visualise
the potential of Kaikoura’s Wakatu Quay
when the areaopens on Friday,
December 11.
The site willbeopen to the publicfor the
firsttime since the demolition and
removal of three derelict buildings.
The demolition of the buildings is partof
the $10.98 millionKaikoura Marine
Development Project funded by the
government’s Provincial Growth Fund.
The site has beencleared to ground
leveland the design conceptphaseis
readytobegin.
The project team willbeseeking ideas
from the communityearlynext year for
what could be built on the site. Feedback
can be made via the Kaikoura District
Council’s website and Facebook pages,
project leader Chris Sturgeon says.
Two areas still requireremedial work
and will be fencedoff, withwork to be
completedinthe New Year.

place and is avibrantgatheringpoint.”
Once initial feedback has been received,
the council will seek expressionsof
interest. There is not expected to be any
construction on the site until towards the
end of nextyear or earlyin2022.
“We recognisedthat avisit to Wakatu
Quay and walking aroundthe wharf is an
activitythat manyfamilies enjoy over the
Christmas period, so we wantedtoensure
the sitewas open to the public in timefor
this,”MrSturgeonsays.
