“We would go out and feed the homeless. My
big picture idea for this is to have a bunch of
different artists throw concerts or events, and
all proceeds go to just strictly trying to help out
different cities and people in need. God has that
in mind for me to do. Those are big goal pictures.
All these little things are just steppingstones. I
am okay with making people uncomfortable
sharing my love for God. That's fine. I'm going
to stand in my truth.”
2017, she continued to push her efforts in
becoming the star he saw in her. Growing up in
the States and having to overcome having an
accent and being teased as a child, she shied
away from stardom, however her courage and
determination brought her to find her voice and
own style. She found her audience and just ran
with it.
Lisa being a strong and determined woman,
surely paid her dues to the music industry. She
would continue to write songs hoping that her
work would get picked up by a famous artist.
Sometimes you just need that one person to
take you to the next level. However, in this
business there are no guarantees. A record can
go as far as being picked up and recorded yet
would not be selected for an album.
Subsequently this would result in the writer not
being paid. These are lessons learned through
trial and error. But Lisa recounts:“I'm glad that
I went through those obstacles and those
experiences because the person that I am now,
shall not be tried today.”
I don’t want to call this sheer luck, but when
you position yourself in certain situations, that
little bit of luck can turn things around very
quickly. In wanting to pursue acting she had
the opportunity of being in the audience of Dr
Phil, or Judges shows in California. “I was that
enthusiastic member of the audience that was
like, "Oh yeah, whohoooo." I was spelling it.”
LOL. It is safe to say that acting was already
part of her. Having to experience theater in
college, she even caught the eye of film director
Russ Parr during the filming of Something Like
a Business in 2010 starring Kevin Hart, she
even had a few lines recorded even though they
were cut at the final release of the movie.
Though acting was fun, she continued to pursue
her music career knowing how much she has
sacrificed to get there. They usually say that it
takes 10 years to create an overnight sensation.
Well after 10 years of consistent work she
received a Grammy nomination for her work
with the singer Mya as her songwriter, and
made it on the Billboard charts even beating
Taylor Swift.
Listening to her story I can truly say that I can
relate. Having to lose her brother to Cancer in
2020 has proven to be a tough year for everyone,
nevertheless it may have been a blessing for
some. Lisa had the opportunity to travel to
Nigeria and work with some prominent names
in the industry. Upon her return, COVID
happened and all her plans came to a halt. But
God certainly works in mysterious ways, it may
have been a blessing in disguise. The plan was
to release her recent single in April of this year.
Alas, it could be the worse feeling when you
know the marketing company that is supposed
to work on your behalf left you the wolves.
Fortunately, with a little patience she was able
to acquire a team of hard-working individuals
who made the release of her latest single
happen. Leaving AWOL and signing with
Empire Distribution was probably the best
move for her career. Marketing were heavily
done in Nigeria, Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, and the
UK. For Lisa, this was her biggest investment.
Amassing nearly two hundred thousand views
on YouTube alone we can confidently say that
her hard work has paid off.
