WHO'S WHO | Serg Garkus
RENDERED
WORLD
Later, when cable TV became available,
I could watch fashion channels and
programs about photo shoots all day
long.
In 2009 I started to work as a
photojournalist and the adventure
began.
What would you call your style
of photography?
If we compare photography with music,
it would be a crossover - non-stop
experiment, a combination of seemingly
incompatible things to find a new sound.
In my works I pay a lot of attention to
light, color, geometry and emotions.
Even before I go to a photo shoot, I need
to have a clear picture in my head of
things I want to get as a result. Of course,
not everything always goes smoothly, but
improvisation is also an element of
experiment.
We love discovering talent
from outside our borders,
and we have to say that we
are undeniably impressed
with Serg Garkus’ work. His
editorial depicted a bit of a
futuristic touch in the
fashion of our times. We are
delighted to share his
thoughts with you:
When did you first know that you
wanted to be a photographer?
After the collapse of the USSR - society of the
same people dressed in the same way, boring
magazines with gray pages and television with
one propaganda channel - the first fashion
catalogs began to arrive from abroad. I could
look at photos in those catalogs for hours. And
when the girls wanted to have these beautiful
clothes, I realized that I want to take such
photos. But at that time and in that social
environment when people were called
“Photographer” they meant the person who
shoots weddings and school albums. Both these
things did not interest me.
Also I’ve discovered the world of photography
thanks to my father’s passion. He’s not a
professional photographer, just a good
engineer. I loved to spend time with my dad
documenting the day to day life of our family
and then observing the magical process of film
development in our home photo lab.
Do you only plan to stay in the
fashion industry or venture out
in other industries?
Needless to say, in a world that turned
upside down, it is difficult to have
confidence in something, but the fashion
industry is my great love. Working with
beautiful and unique fabrics, prints,
styles and colors makes me happy. This
is the largest field for creativity, that each
time requires a new fresh approach and
where there is no room for
standardization.
What is the most memorable
photography session that you
ever had?
Many of the photo shoots were unique
and memorable, thanks to different
things - interesting places, great teams,
specific clients who needed specific
approaches.
