Over time some of the
messaging had mostly
remained the same – cars
and houses were still getting
broken into as they were not
secure and valuables were in
clear view through windows.
But a major difference today
was the dangers of the internet,
which proved to be a challenge.
“Fraud, scams – that’s really
taken off as it’s all electronic
now, and they are getting
clever,” McGusty said.
The manager’s first year
at CNS has been rocky, to
meeting to
discuss crime
prevention in
the area last
year. • From page 1
say the least. Like “all nonprofits,”
they were facing
financial challenges caused by
Covid-19.
But communities they support,
especially some elderly
people, were still isolated and
struggling.
“There’s still a reluctance,
with older people it’s taken
a while. They’re still very
cautious about mingling and
meeting new people.”
When McGusty was not
tramping or dabbling in a bit
of horticulture, he was thinking
ahead.
His next steps included
organising a crime prevention
study, which examined
different communities
and whether they had
neighbourhood support
groups or not, and if this
affected crime rates.
“There isn’t much crime
going on in an area with
really strong neighbourhood
support, but there will be
other areas with no support
groups, so I just wanted to do
a comparison.”
GARDEN AWARDS
Judging for the city council’s
Community Pride Garden Awards
2021 in the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
area has now started. The awards
acknowledge those who have
contributed to maintaining the
Garden City image of Christchurch
by beautifying their streets and
gardens. No application is required,
as judges view gardens from the
street in participating community
board areas. Gardens can be
residential or commercial, with
judging finishing on February 7,
followed by the presentation of
certificates at award ceremonies
The People’s Choice members Jake
McLellan, Yani Johanson, Michelle
Lomax, Jackie Simons and Sunita
Gautam faced public backlash for
their calls that Davids step down.
They eventually revoked their plans.
Once a new deputy chair is found,
focus will turn to the board’s longterm
plan and setting priorities for
the rest of the year.
“There will be a continued focus on
greening of the east. We have been
pooling together plans from around
the area,” she said.
“We will be providing more seating
as quick wins while we continue to
look at the bigger picture of more
in March and April. Judging for
Christchurch Street and Gardens
Awards will take place at the same
time until February 17.
INTERSECTION UPGRADE
Work to improve safety at the
Marshland, Lower Styx and Hawkins
Rds intersection will start this
culvert, installation of traffic signals
and street lights, road widening
and landscaping. Construction is
expected to be completed by March
next year and will be carried out in
Looking to make tangible changes
native planting in the future.”
The board will be contributing
to a climate change workshop on
February 24.
“This will help us to decide on
where we can best put our efforts to
help make some positive tangible
change,” she said.
An exciting event for young
people based in the Linwood and
Ferrymead area is planned for March.
The board has partnered with Youth
and Cultural Development and the
Eastgate Mall to host the Ball in the
The board is assisting with some
of the financing and staffing of the
event.
