christchurch School of Music
The challenges we have all faced in 2020
have proved to us at the Christchurch School
of Music, just how important music is to
our well-being, a sense of purpose and an
opportunity to communicate and collaborate
with others to create something very special.
It was wonderful for us to see the
excitement and enthusiasm of our students
on the first day back at rehearsals as soon
as we came out of Level 2. “ I didn’t realise
how much I loved orchestra until we went
into lockdown and I missed it so much”
Comments like this were very common
on the first day back. We may have had to
sanitise our hands, sit socially distanced
from our friends in the ensemble, spray our
chairs and stands between groups but it was
all worth it just to have the chance to make
music again.
The Christchurch School of Music is
a family-oriented community aimed at
providing quality music education in
and around Christchurch. We believe
passionately in the power of music to
promote well-being and joy in people’s
lives and we constantly strive to ensure our
kaupapa meets the needs of all the students
in our care.
On a Saturday morning the whole family
can find something to suit. Preschool and
junior school children can start their musical
journey by joining in our “Take Off with
Music” classes while older children and
adults may opt for lessons on a specific
instrument (including voice). Those who
already play are welcome to join in one
of the great ensembles which all take part
in regular concerts. Our students enjoy
ensembles in a wide range of genres from
classical through to choral, jazz, rock and
world music.
Age is no limit - our Late Starters
programme provides the opportunity for
adults to learn an instrument and join an
ensemble with other like-minded adults.
If Saturday isn’t an option, CSM also
offers a range of weekday opportunities
for learning and playing music and, if
affordability is an issue, CSM may be able to
offer a discount through funding provided
by the Rata Foundation and CERT.
Come and join us and start on a musical
journey that will bring joy for a lifetime.
