Mental Health in Uncertain Times is a special event series from Burbank Public Library
As part of the series we’re collecting inspirational quotes for a community activity - find details inside
Elizabeth Goldman
Library Services Director
A Note from the Director
This month marks one year of the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of Burbank’s
libraries and other City facilities. Although all of us have done our best to adapt and
meet the challenges of our times, there is no doubt that the past year has taken a toll
on our health, especially our mental health. As we hopefully emerge from lockdowns
this spring, resume in-person services and see an expansion of our social interactions,
we would all benefit from some time spent checking in on our mental health.
In response to this, we are excited that Burbank Public Library is part of this year’s
Book to Action cohort, a group of libraries from around California who were selected
to participate in activities around themes including mental health. This grant allows us
to offer a series of special programs from March through May, “Mental Health in Uncertain Times.” You can join in
a book club facilitated by licensed therapists at the Family Service Agency of Burbank, learn how mind and body
wellness connect through the practice of yoga, or participate in a community-wide action to identify inspirational
quotes for display on the Chandler Bike Path.
It is one of the Library’s primary goals to build community by bringing people together to discuss challenging issues,
find common ground, and learn about resources available to them. As with so many other organizations, this part of
our mission has been challenged in the past year by the restrictions on our operations. We hope the springtime will
fulfill its promise as a time of rebirth. We look forward to welcoming you back through our doors as soon as possible,
and we hope to you and the larger community as we emerge from our homes and we all work to restore our sense of
normalcy and health.
Together with 110 California libraries, we are participating in Book to Action, a
program of the California Library Association, supported in whole or in part by the
U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library
Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
Our librarians have put together
these recommendations
to offer support and guidance
as we move forward
Throughout the past year we have all been subject to mental health issues, from
small schedule adjustments to major financial issues, from discouraging days to
dealing with depression, and from minor health issues to significant loss. All under
the umbrella of an unknown, undefined future. It’s no wonder we need help.
“While never minimizing the seriousness of Casey’s personal problems, the book is also funny and
romantic and hard to put down, full of well-observed details of restaurant culture and writer’s
workshops. It’s hard to imagine a reader who wouldn’t root for Casey.”
