Boy racers causing
carnage in district
BURNOUTS: The aftermath of boy racers on Ellesmere Junction Rd, Springston.
• By Susan Sandys
BOY RACERS are a problem
in the district again and police
are looking at ways to put the
brakes on them.
Tyre marks from late night
burnouts are becoming common
place on the district’s
roads and intersections.
Selwyn police are liaising
with the Christchurch-based
police anti-social road user
squad, Senior Sergeant Dean
Harker said.
He said gatherings of boy racers
were being held more often.
In a recent incident a boy
Charging
plan for use
of council
reserves
almost
finalised
• By Susan Sandys
THE DISTRICT council is one
step closer to introducing a
consistent charging regime for
sports clubs and groups to use
and occupy council reserves.
The charges are likely to be
hotly debated by clubs throughout
the district, some of which
pay to use and occupy reserves,
and some of which do not.
At a council meeting last week,
councillors recommended the
council support the introduction
of a “fair and
consistent charging
approach”
and endorsed a
draft schedule of
fees and charges.
District council
open space and
strategy manager
Mark Rykers
Mark Rykers said since a districtwide
rating approach for reserves
was introduced when adopting the
2018-2028 Long Term Plan, fees
and rentals had continued to be
charged in some cases, through
various formal lease agreements or
annual rentals.
THERE MUST have been
a lot of intense discussion
and negotiations in Lincoln
on Sunday – all around
whether the district’s now
iconic music festival would
go ahead.
When Jacinda Ardern announced
on Saturday night
Auckland was back in level 3
and the rest of New Zealand
level 2, it signalled the end of
many events.
But Selwyn Sounds promoter
David Parlane had
other ideas and after many
hours on the phone late on
Saturday night and through
Sunday the event was saved
(see page 5).
And that must be good for
all concerned.
Also in today’s issue is the
contentious issue of district
council plans to introduce a
consistent charging regime
for sports clubs and groups
to use and occupy council
reserves (see page 1).
Riders ‘devastated’ by tack theft
• By Susan Sandys
VICTIMS OF a shed burglary
which saw more than $10,000
of horse gear taken believe
the offenders scoped out the
building before striking.
Two Prebbleton families are
devastated after the theft of the
gear from their tack shed.
Kylie Stacey said she
discovered the shed had been
broken into overnight as she
went to feed the horses about
7am on Tuesday last week.
THe first thing she noticed was
the lock to the shed, at a grazing
paddock on Marshs Rd, had
been jemmied off.
“I looked inside, it was empty,
everything was gone.”
THe burglars had also stolen
gear from a nearby horse float.
THe offenders had cut through
a deer fence, then driven in over
a garden to the paddock, before
loading up their vehicle.
She said the shed looked like
a hay shed from the road and
therefore believed the offenders
had scoped out the shed prior
to the burglary. Police were
investigating.
“THe sad thing is the gear isn’t
always down there. Because it
is expensive, valuable gear we
don’t leave it there, but with
competitions occasionally it
spends the night over, so they
just lucked out and got it when it
was there,” Stacey said.
“I definitely would say it is
planned and they have looked
at it beforehand, and they have
known what is going to be
there.”
She urged members of the
riding community to keep an
eye out for the jump saddle,
believing at some point it may be
listed on a buy/sell page. She had
also made saddlery shops and
CLEANED OUT: Hayley Duggan (left) and Emily Heald are
devastated by the theft of all their horse gear, including
an expensive jump saddle, similar to that above.
saddle fitters aware of the theft.
THe gear belonged to Stacey’s
daughter Emily, 16, and Emily’s
friend Hayley, 15, who grazed
their horses at the paddock.
The tally of the missing
gear included three saddles,
including a $6000 jump saddle,
five feed bins, a sack of chaff,
numerous bridles, helmets, back
protectors, grooming brushes,
food supplements and fence
standards.
Stacey was filing an insurance
report, and was hopeful at
least some of the gear would be
covered. However, the loss was
more than monetary.
Emily and Hayley had just
started the eventing season with
their horses, but now would
have to miss competitions in
coming weekends as it would
take time to replace their gear.
For example, they would have to
buy new saddles, but this would
take some time as they had to be
fitted to their horses.
THe girls had worked hard
to get the gear they had, saving
money from jobs and pocket
money. They had been distraught
at the theft and had now moved
their horses from the paddock as
they did not feel safe.
Stacey said the grooming
brushes had been hers when she
was younger and were hard to
replace as they did not make that
type any more.
PLAY WALL INSTALLED
The Selwyn Sports Centre’s
digital play wall has been
installed as the centre tracks
towards opening for the
winter sports season. The
wall is the first digital play
wall in New Zealand using Lü
interactive sports technology,
which projects immersive,
interactive video games onto
the wall. The games can be
played individually, for teams,
or against another opponent.
They range from mathematics
and geography puzzles to hitthe-target
contests. The exact
details are still under discussion,
but there will likely be a small
charge to use the sports wall, in
order to cover the licence fee for
the games.
FIRE AT DOMAIN
Southbridge volunteer brigade
Public urged
Said Harker: “No-one was able
to tell us what happened. It’s quite
hard if people don’t see anything
or don’t want to tell us anything.
“When we arrived, he (the victim)
was conscious and talking,
he wasn’t too forthcoming (with
information) either,” Harker said.
The incident at the Springston
end of Ellesmere Junction Rd
about 2.30am on February 21
was responded
to by firefighters
as a “car versus
The injured
to Christchurch
Dean Harker
Hospital by ambulance.
As police responded
to the incident they saw
about 25 cars on their way to the
boy racer gathering.
Harker urged any members of
the public who may have seen
anything to contact police. Police
were following up on inquires
and continuing to speak to people
from the scene.
Harker urged anyone seeing
incidents under way to get
“This situation has resulted in a
variety of different approaches that
is now confusing, inconsistent and,
in some cases, unfair,” Rykers said.
The draft fee schedule, to come
up for community consultation in
the 2021-31 Long Term Plan, details
charges from zero, for seasonal
users of sports fields and courts,
upwards.
“No charges will apply where
there is a standard non-permanent
(seasonal) use of council land,”
Rykers said.
There would also be no charge
for casual use of a reserve, such as
by schools or for community-based
activities, events and tournaments.
“However, where a club or group,
usually a sports club, gets the benefit
of a premium level of service and
that cost is met by council, then a
charge will be made to recover a
portion of the costs.”
This charge would generally be
applied on a per field/court basis.
Springston Amalgamated Sports
Committee chairman Rupert
Tipples said clubs such as rugby,
cricket, netball and tennis which
used the Springston Reserve and
Errol Tweedy Pavilion had a long
history of volunteer input to the
facilities. While the council was
saying a uniform charge would be
fair, he did not agree.
“What’s the purpose of having
recreation reserves – they were set
up so everyone could play sport.
The original land was probably
donated or given by the Crown for
communities, and now turning
around and making people pay for
it, despite that they are being rated
for it anyway . . . ”
Currently the Springston sports
clubs paid $200 per year to the
committee for membership of
the pavilion bar, but did not pay
anything to use and occupy the
reserve.
$80 per seasonal sports
being cancellation.
A NEW report from GNS
Science has shown Selwyn
is safer from tsunamis than
previously thought.
The district council has
revised the district’s tsunami
zones in response to the report,
commissioned by Environment
Canterbury.
As a result, a smaller number
of households are now in the
evacuation zone.
However, Civil Defence
manager Al Lawn says it is
still important for people to be
prepared in case of tsunamis and
of earthquakes that can cause
tsunamis.
“It’s good news for us because
we’re safer from the wave than
we thought, but it’s still important
that people are ready. If
you’re near the coast and there’s
an earthquake that’s long or
strong, get gone. Get off the
water, get off the beach and get
to higher ground.”
The district council has
started directly informing
residents in the affected coastal
area between the Rakaia River
and Banks Peninsula of the new
zones.
The report is a timely remind-
Grower ordered
to repay wages
ASPARAGUS grower
Christopher Gray has been
fined for under-paying exploited
workers.
The Employment Relations
Authority set the penalty for the
owner of Motukarara Asparagus
at $26,000, after ordering in October
that he repay 13 staff about
$54,000.
Many of the workers were from
Fiji and were vulnerable because
they didn’t know their entitlements,
and English was their
second language.
Workers were paid a piece
rate based on the amount of
asparagus that they picked, and
weren’t paid minimum wages and
holiday entitlements.
It was found some of the
employee’s wages were being
calculated based on how much
asparagus they picked at $2.50 a
kilogram.
According to the ERA, there
are four different types of
breaches by Gray.
A failure to pay minimum wage
for 12 employees, failure to obtain
consent for deductions from
wages for 11 employees, failure to
provide for public holidays and
failure to keep compliant holiday
and leave records.
The ERA found pay was being
deducted for things such as
airfares and accommodation
without the workers’ consent.
Selwyn District Council in partnership with Niche Marketing are hosting a
series of 3 webinars to boost your knowledge and to support your online
marketing. The 1 hour webinar will be delivered via Zoom over 3 consecutive
weeks starting at 10am.
Free resources will also be provided at the end of each webinar.
Zoom in to all 3 or choose which ones you would like to attend.
Why your business needs digital marketing
Running any business is a juggle of time and resources.
The pressure to show-up on-line consistently can feel
overwhelming. Here we discuss how in just 90 minutes
a week you can set-up and run successful digital
marketing. We’ll look at your publishing opportunities
and how to really showcase your expertise on multiple
digital platforms.
Tuesday 16 March
What is working now in digital marketing?
How can you get your business found on google and
social searches? How do you ensure your business
gets seen by the perfect audience? What is the best
‘type’ of digital content to get your business seen and
remembered? We’ll share the best ways to work smart
and get found.
Tuesday 23 March
Email Marketing – why is it so important?
Email marketing is still the NUMBER ONE way to
convert your leads into sales. Emails sit at the heart of
your digital marketing and will help you build long-term
relationships, drive sales, capture lead information and
position you as an expert. Regular, interesting emails
can be a game-changer yet most business owners
rarely, if ever, email their contacts. Email marketing is
the glue that links your digital marketing together. It
keeps existing customers loyal and coming back more
frequently and referring your business; converts leads
into paying customers.

Neighbourhood events
growing in popularity
• By Susan Sandys
SELWYN RESIDENTS are a
sociable lot; they love mingling
with their neighbours.
Growing numbers are celebrating
at Meet Your Street events,
where the district council provides
$75 per event for residents
to host a gathering.
The majority of events have
been street barbecues, while
some have been Christmas parties,
treasure hunts, halloween or
other events.
Figures from the district council
show residents have organised
35 separate events in the six
months from October 2019 to
March 2020.
There were no recorded events
in the following seven months
from March to September last
year, which was no surprise
considering both the time of year
and lockdown and Covid-19 alert
level restrictions.
Residents were quick to begin
socialising with each other again
once the weather warmed up,
and from October 2020 to February
2021 there were 37 events,
with more applications still coming
through.
Group manager community
FRIENDLY: Last year’s event in Flannery St, Leeston.
services and facilities Denise
Kidd said the numbers of people
holding Meet Your Street events
was growing.
“And we are keen to continue
to support more residents in
creating positive connections
within their neighbourhoods,”
Kidd said.
“We encourage alternatives
to barbecues, such as
picnics in neighbourhood
parks and reserves or taking
advantage of occasions such as
Matariki.”
The areas holding events to
date had mostly been within
Rolleston and Lincoln, in new
housing areas, while events had
also been held in Prebbleton,
Leeston, Darfield, Springston,
Greendale, West Melton,
Ladbrooks, Kirwee, Greenpark,
Springfield and Tai Tapu.
Broken River Ski Club celebrated its 70th anniversary
on Saturday with an open day at the skifield. Hamish
Henderson of Springfield (front) on a nutcracker rope
tow was among more than 200 visitors from Darfield,
Christchurch, North Canterbury and as far afield as
Greymouth. The day started with a scenic 4min ride
on the club’s funicular rail – The Tyndall Tramway – up
through mountain beech forest from the skifield car
park, the event also included a scavenger hunt for the
children (below).
THE ROLLESTON Toy Library
has reopened at a temporary
site in the Izone Industrial Park,
but is urgently seeking new
volunteers to keep operating.
Following the sale of Storage
King Rolleston, the toy library
was forced to put their operations
on hold while they sought
alternative premises to house
their toy collection, which
services a growing number of
members.
The district council offered a
lifeline, in the form of a temporary
space on a council-owned
lot on Detroit Drive. Meadow
Mushrooms then helped out by
providing two 40ft containers to
house the collection, delivered by
NZ Express Transport.
“Without this reprieve, we
would have been forced to
indefinitely suspend our service,
which would have been a huge
disappointment to us and all
our members who have come
to value the toy library service,”
Michelle Sim said.
“For many, choosing toys
to hire, then coming to pick
them up has become one of
the highlights of their family’s
week. With 73 member families
now, we can’t afford to let them
down.”
While the committee is
thrilled to be operating their
‘click and collect’ service once
again on site, the ultimate goal
remains to be able to open a
regular, fully-functioning toy
library in permanent premises,
which will provide the muchneeded
space for the collection to
grow, Sim said.
The immediate challenge is
recruiting new volunteers to
keep the toy library operating.
NEWS 13
Premature births tax hospital resources
Neonatal
intensive care
unit running
over capacity
• By Bea Gooding
SHOCK: July and Dave McQueen with their son who was
born eight weeks early, weighing just under 2kg.
WHEN JULY McQueen was
rushed to Christchurch Women’s
Hospital to give birth eight
weeks early, there wasn’t much
time to react to news that she
had to do so in another city.
Midwives advised her and
husband, Dave, that the neonatal
intensive care unit was well over
capacity at the time and could
not accommodate any more
babies.
But as they prepared to transfer
to a hospital in Dunedin
things took a turn at the last
minute and it was deemed no
longer safe for McQueen to
travel.
“We didn’t have time to react.
As if having to deliver our child
eight weeks too early isn’t shocking
enough, we really just dealt
with the news as they gave it to
us,” McQueen said.
“I knew that they had mine
and my baby’s best interests in
mind when they suggested to
move us to another hospital with
a well-equipped neonatal intensive
care unit.”
McQueen was 31 weeks pregnant
when her son decided to
make his entrance into the world
this month, weighing more than
expected for his age at just 4.2
pounds.
She said nothing sudden or
obvious happened that triggered
her water to break. At first, she
thought her bladder was leaking
– until it kept going.
Said McQueen: “I rang my
midwife immediately who instructed
me to go straight to hospital.
It was only when the results
came back from a test after I gave
birth revealing that I developed
an infection in my placenta that
will eventually affect the baby.
“At that point, the baby’s
natural defence mechanism
took its course.”
Midwives tried their best to
medication.
She was told that due to
NICU’s over-capacity, it would
be ideal if she did not go into
labour, “but my baby had other
plans.”
After about eight hours, he was
born.
Canterbury District Health
Board clinical director Dr Nicola
Austin confirmed that NICU
was currently operating over
capacity. However, the hospital
did not characterise this as
“overcrowding.”
Women have not been sent
to different hospitals due to
capacity in the maternity wards,
she said, but it differed if they
were at risk.
“When required, for capacityrelated
reasons, we do need to
transfer mothers with high-risk
pregnancies to other regions with
available NICU beds before they
deliver their baby,” Austin said.
CDHB director of midwifery
Norma Campbell said one moment
of time did not represent
whether the birthing suite was
over capacity.
“Just like ED, it can move very
rapidly, from being manageable
to operating at full capacity, and
vice versa, within the course of a
day,” Campbell said.
Data supplied by CDHB
revealed an average of 418 inpatient
deliveries during the month
of December at Christchurch
Women’s in the past seven years
– excluding home births, and
births at St George’s Hospital.
But last December and January,
the numbers were 426 and
449 respectively.
Maximum resourced capacity
at the Christchurch NICU has
increased from 41 to 44 babies.
Austin said additional nurses
are put on shifts to cover higher
occupancy rates.
McQueen said she received
adequate care in spite of limited
resources.
“Even with limited resources,
I’ve never been made to feel like I
was a nuisance to them,” she said.
Annual water
use charges
If you’ve got a water use consent to take more than five
litres per second, you’ll be receiving an invoice over the
next few months.
Each consent to take water will be charged an annual
fixed fee for data processing. This fee will help to ensure
we use Canterbury’s water resources more sustainably.
Work beginning on
Prebbleton intersections upgrade
Work will begin this week on construction of two new roundabouts near Prebbleton.
Isaac Construction Ltd has been appointed as the contractor to build the two-lane roundabouts
and other road works needed at the Springs Road/Marshs Road and Shands Road/Blakes Road
intersections.
The intersections are planned to be substantially completed by mid-2021. Both intersections will
be kept open in both directions as often as possible during the work, but traffic management will
be in place, including reduced speeds through the work zone.
This follows Council obtaining the land necessary to build the roundabouts to an appropriate size
that will cope with increasing traffic flows and future growth in the area.
The roundabouts are being mainly funded by Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
Under the conditions of the funding from NZTA, both roundabouts must be substantially
completed by mid-2021 and the work schedule, including completing both roundabouts at the
same time, has been set accordingly.
Since funding approval the work to fully design the intersections and obtain the necessary
consents had been fast tracked so that works could be tendered for construction as soon as
possible to meet this requirement.
Council Transportation Asset Manager Andrew Mazey says, “We are very pleased that we are now
in a position to start this work to improve the safety and performance of the Shands and Springs
arterials roads connecting to the Christchurch Southern Motorway and the City’s roading network.
“We are continuing to work with NZTA to provide further intersection safety upgrades on these
arterial roads in the Prebbleton area as part of a comprehensive road safety plan.”
Funding from NZTA for a two-lane roundabout at each intersection was secured in 2019 at an
expected total cost of $9.7 million, with NZTA funding covering 75% of the cost as part of their
national Safe Network Programme. The Council will cover the remaining cost for the Shands
Road/Blakes Road intersection, while the balance for the Springs Road/Marsh Road intersection
will be split between the Selwyn District and Christchurch City Councils.
Confidence growing among
Selwyn businesses
Selwyn businesses are increasingly confident about the future.
The findings come from the second Selwyn Business Survey, a
quarterly survey organised by the Council, which shows businesses
are overwhelmingly more positive about the outlook over the next
six months.
The February survey of 120 businesses from over 17 different
industries shows confidence growing after a year affected by the
COVID-19 global pandemic.
The results showed 28% of businesses were expecting their
profits to increase over the next six months and 9% are expecting
to hire new staff. This compared to 10% of businesses that
reported reduced profits over the previous six months, while 6% of
businesses reduced staff in that time.
Council Group Manager Community Services and Facilities Denise
Kidd says it was good to see the positive outlook despite the
challenges of the pandemic.
“It’s particularly pleasing to see businesses reporting that they’re
planning to hire over the next six months. Especially as autumn and
winter are typically quieter periods for hiring.”
The pandemic led to challenges accessing supplies and finding
skilled and semi-skilled staff. Businesses are also expecting costs
to rise in the next six months.
However, there were also positives for business, with 35% reporting
a closer relationship with customers, while businesses also
reported an increase in use of online services, more flexible work
arrangements, increased use of local suppliers and more efficient
use of staff and resources.
“We know there are still challenges to come, but it’s good to see
businesses and our community working together and adapting well
and that we’re well placed for the long-term,” Denise says.
The results were presented to around 60 business leaders at the
second Council business breakfast on Tuesday (23 February),
organised to support businesses through practical speakers and
encouraging networking.
The guests also heard from the Canterbury Employers Chamber
of Commerce with practical tips on wellbeing and staff retention
and support.
Why risk everything? That’s the question for every drive you make.
The Council is running its latest road safety campaign targeting intersection safety. The campaign is
aimed at bringing awareness to the importance of stopping at stop signs, and questions risk taking of
the driver.
It is reminding drivers to reduce their speed and to always stay alert when approaching intersections.
Road Safety Education Coordinator Jessica Fairbrass says stop signs mean stop for all drivers’ safety.
”Why risk your life and others to save a few seconds?”
Since 2015, failing to stop or give way at intersections has been a factor in 35% of all serious and fatal
crashes in Selwyn. The new campaign features a local police officer from the Strategic Traffic Unit in
OPINION 17
Unacceptable levels of
poverty and inequality
I MET with Rolleston’s
Salvation Army just prior
to Christmas and was
disturbed to learn they’ve
never been so busy, 95
per cent of their clientele
are women, loan sharks
are circling and, most
worryingly, they’re seeing
at least one family harm
incident a week.
Local schools I’ve met
with corroborate that.
It comes as the 14th
annual state of the nation
report from the Salvation
Army makes for some sobering
reading – and we all
should sit up and take note.
It says that while New
Zealand has fared well
compared with other nations,
the economic impact
of Covid-19 is set to further
exacerbate already-unacceptable
levels of poverty
and inequality.
Here in Selwyn, however,
it is heartening to see
the level of awareness and
community-led motivation
to tackle these issues.
Recently, I attended the
Selwyn social well-being
forum. It included sessions
on problem gambling,
alcohol and drug addiction,
elder abuse and family
harm prevention.
Huge credit should go
Nicola Grigg
Selwyn MP
to the Selwyn Parenting
Network who are spearheading
the establishment
of the Selwyn Safer Families
network – a collaboration
between the district
council, police and various
support groups aiming to
eradicate family harm in
the region.
Work is under way
to establish a terms of
reference, and to streamline
existing services, as well
as educating the public
on how to navigate those
services.
We have a fabulous
network of community
organisations and NGOs
here – all who pitch in and
do their bit to support.
We, as a community,
would do well to support
them in return.
Nationally, The Salvation
Army distributed more
than 110,000 food parcels
last year – double the
number in 2019. This is the
highest number in the 14
years of the report.
The number of children
in benefit-dependent
households increased by
more than 23,000 during
2020, and Covid-19 has
impacted more heavily on
students from lower decile
schools. The Salvation
Army’s Lieutenant-Colonel
Ian Hatson describes child
poverty rates as ‘a national
disgrace’.
Statistics from the Ministry
for Social Development
show that even before the
pandemic hit, the number
of people on benefits were
going through the roof,
hardship grants being
handed out were climbing
and the public housing
waiting list is skyrocketing.
And I can’t help but
worry about the impact the
tail of this thing is going to
have here in Selwyn.
Yes, by all accounts
we came out of 2020 in
relatively good shape but
we shouldn’t kid ourselves
that our community is
immune from the social
impact of an economic
downturn.
PETER AND CATHARINE EXCITED
TO BE RICCARTON PARK BOUND
Peter and Catharine Craig are on the
countdown to moving in to Riccarton Park
Retirement Village, and are very excited
by how close they’ll be to the track and
horses. They have both followed gallops
and harness racing around the world and
love the atmosphere around a big day.
They say they will enjoy both the village
community and being able to easily fit their
possessions into their new home.
When Peter and Catharine noticed that
Ryman had bought land to develop near the
Riccarton racecourse, they started thinking
afresh about a move from their home in
Hoon Hay Road.
Then Riccarton Park Sales Advisor Wendy
Kappler showed them the three-bedroom
townhouse floor plan. It included space
and importantly a large garage to meet
their storage and vehicle access needs.
Plus, there are the ‘horses’.
Peter is originally from Auckland and says
he is ‘dual coded’. He has been going
to harness racing and the gallops since
the days of Alexandra Park and Ellerslie
racecourse events in the 1960s. Both his
parents and grandparents were keen on
the sport in those days. His father’s cousin
Thayne Green was a part owner of Sunline,
a horse that went on to earn nearly $14
million in a race career that included two
Cox Plates.
The interest in racing and horse breeding
took place during a long career as an
accountant including seven years with The
Treasury and twenty five with IRD.
In the world of harness racing Peter’s had
ownership interests in several successful
harness horses that he either raced or bred.
He’s also researched and written about
the industry.
Catharine is a gardener, and was brought
up in the Isle of Thanet, Kent, a county also
known as ‘the garden of England’. She says
the couple met while both working for Inland
Revenue in Wellington and she has enjoyed
travelling to meet other horse racing fans.
That has included regular catchups for the
Inter Dominion Pacing Championship that
has been contested since 1936 in locations
including Perth, Adelaide, Christchurch,
Launceston, Melbourne, Auckland and
Sydney. It is fair to say they like travel
and adventure.
Ryman Healthcare’s work on a new
retirement village at the stunning
Riccarton Park location has been
progressing quickly and residents who have
signed up, including Peter and Catharine,
have been excited to see roofs in place and
cladding on the homes.
Peter reckons theirs is the fifth roof on.
“We’ve seen the floor plate go down, we’ve
seen the framing go up, we’ve seen the
roof framing go up... from the racecourse
actually.”
As New Zealand’s largest retirement village
operator, Ryman purchased a 5-hectare site
at Riccarton Park, off Steadman Road, and
is working on the first stage of townhouses
for occupation in 2021.
The facilities include an indoor swimming
pool, a movie theatre, café, hair and beauty
salons, a woodland forest walk as well as
special spectator decks looking out over
Riccarton Racecourse.
The village will provide multiple living
options. The plans includes one, two and
three bedroom apartments and two and
three bedroom townhouses. There will also
be assisted living in serviced apartments
and resthome, hospital and dementia care.
The village will create significant
construction jobs, as well as long-term
sustainable jobs for more than 160 staff.
Helping over-65s get
back into workforce
• By Matt Slaughter
AGE CONCERN Canterbury
has created a new role to help
over 65-year-olds who have lost
jobs because of Covid-19 back
into work.
Its chief executive Simon Templeton
anticipates the pandemic’s
impact on job losses for this age
group will be significant.
He said the new position is
needed to help find new jobs for
those who have become unemployed,
because superannuation
payments are not high enough
for the increasing number of
over-65s renting or having to pay
off mortgages.
Superannuants receive $424 a
week for those living alone and
$652 a week for married couples
who both qualify.
Statistics NZ spokesman James
Weir said about 25 per cent of 65
to 70-year-olds either still have
to work to afford to live, or work
by choice. He said this number
has increased over the last few
years and anticipates it will continue
to grow.
The unemployment rate for
over-65s in New Zealand for December
last year was 2.1 per cent,
HAVE YOUR SAY
your story. Email matt.
0.7 per cent more than the same
time in 2019 (1.4 per cent).
Templeton said the full extent
of Covid-19’s impact on unemployment
for over-65s is not yet
known, but he believes they will
have been hit hard.
Said Templeton: “I haven’t seen
any age breakdowns yet, but it
wouldn’t surprise me if older
people are being let go.
“The real number of over-65s
in the workforce is growing
every day as well and, you know,
we know they face challenges
around ageism in some workplaces.”
Ian Fraser runs Seniors@
Work, a website which helps people
over 50s find employment.
He said of jobs recently listed
for driver fillers for Vector Ltd
across a number of New Zealand
locations on the website, the position
in Christchurch received
the most applications.
“The Christchurch one attracted
easily the most instant
number of job views and applications,
which to me, tells me
that Christchurch is struggling.
I mean, I can’t verify that, but
that’s my sort of gut reading.”
Ministry of Social Development
unemployment statistics
for January show 5.5 per cent
of Canterbury 18 to 64-yearolds
are receiving jobseeker
benefits. This is the fith lowest
unemployment rate of all New
Zealand regions.
New Zealand’s unemployment
rate for this age group as of
December was 4.9 per cent, a 0.8
per cent increase compared to
2019 (4.1 per cent).
City2Surf has history of
overcoming adversity
• By Matt Slaughter
THE CITY2SURF fun run, is
all about helping people achieve
their personal goals, quite oten
against the odds.
The run has also been
challenged in recent years and
has had to overcome adversity in
those times.
The event’s old eastern
suburbs course was devastated
by the February 22, 2011,
earthquake.
It was the first time in 37 years
the event was cancelled but just
one year later, Star Media found
a new course and competitors
flocked to participate again.
Then came the 2019 mosque
shootings.
Rather than let March 15
stop the City2Surf, Star Media
made the difficult decision to
hold the event the following
weekend. This helped lit
community spirits at a time of
grief.
Last year’s event was cancelled
due to Covid-19, like many other
events across
Christchurch
and the rest of
the world.
For this
reason, next
month’s
Les Mills
City2Surf on March 21 is
shaping up to be an extra special
occasion, with thousands of
people already entered to take
part.
Star Media regional manager
Steve McCaughan said: “This
year may be our biggest yet. Star
Media is honouring all entries
bibs held over from last year and
2021 entries appear to also be
very strong.
“The City2Surf is iconic with
Cantabrians and this year we
have another amazing prize
pool for participants to win, plus
we have drinks and giveaways
on the finish line, where you can
pick up your certificate.”
With less than a month to go,
McCaughan said people should
grab a friend or organise a work
group and enter today.
This year’s supporting
charity is the Prostate Cancer
Foundation of New Zealand.
Triathlon stars set to light
up the Sea2Sky Challenge
The Brad Richards Building Sea2Sky
Challenge 2021 will boast a stellar line up
this year with the majority of New Zealands
olympic triathlon hopefuls heading to
Sumner on 14th March.
The annual Challenge offers an end of
summer test for the serious athlete as well
as those that just want to give it a try. The
sixth edition of the challenge has partnered
with local company Brad Richards Building
as this year’s principal race sponsor.
Director and Redcliffs resident Brad
Richards completed the 17km run last year
“we are so lucky to have such an incredible
run right on our door step. The section from
Godley Head back to the clocktower is
stunning but tough on the legs with all the
ups and downs”.
The 2021 event will see Olympic triathlon
hopefuls jostle for bragging rights, as well
as over $5000 prize purse. Hayden Wilde,
a rising star of world triathlon and potential
olympic medalist has confirmed his entry,
along with former world Under 23 years
champion Tayler Reid, top international Sam
Ward and local professional Saxon Morgan.
The women’s field will include former
Under 23 years World Champion Rebecca
Spence up against Nicole Van der Kaay,
Commonwealth Games relay medallist, as
well as highly regarded Ainsley Thorpe and
Sophie Corbidge.
The event was the brainchild of Sumner
resident and triathlon legend Dr John
Hellemans whose grand children are now
amongst the participants in the kids event,
“in the early days of triathlon it was all a
bit of an adventure, this event brings some
of that adventure back to a sport that has
become quite structured - it’s also great to
see all the kids involved”.
As well as the elite racing there are events
for all ages and abilities with a duathlon
option, 17km run, Junior racing and kids
Aquathon. One of the oldest competitors
and a regular on the Christchurch triathlon
scene, John Gordon, 81 years young will
also be out there competing.
THE FIRST major milestone of
Ben Hope’s driving career may
be just the beginning.
But the West Melton-based
21-year-old admits unless he
continues to improve he would
be just as happy to hand the reins
on stable runners to somebody
else.
Hope drove his 100th winner
behind one of his favourite
horses in Midnight Dash at Addington
on Thursday night, the
pair overcoming a 30m handicap
to win easily after Hope handled
the four-year-old a treat.
That Midnight Dash could
overcome the handicap comes
as no surprise as he has been
competitive in a four-year-old
crop that looks full of open class
horses and one of those is stablemate
Muscle Mountain, who
Hope drove to win at Addington
two weeks ago and ultimately
will be Ben’s drive longer term.
“It is almost a shame we have
Muscle Mountain from that
point of view cause I love driving
this horse, he is a corker,” he said.
“But all going well with them
both he will need another driver
soon and that driver could end
up on him at the Jewels, which is
where they both will head.”
It has taken Hope just threeand-a-half
years to get to 100
wins at a time when he is also
part of the training team with
parents Greg and Nina.
Originally he wanted to train
and try his hand at driving but
now he is the stable’s main driver
as he has continued to improve.
“We still have Ricky (May)
driving for us but I am lucky that
I do most of our driving now,
with Ricky still very much part
of the stable as obviously drives
horses like A G’s White Socks.
“But I have had really good
support and being on those
better horses makes you a better
driver. It helps with your confidence.”
While Hope’s confidence is
rightly high he is also realistic
about his driving future.
“I want to keep driving and
I enjoy it but I also realise not
everybody is a Dexter Dunn or
Blair Orange.
“So far it is going well and I am
happy to get to 100 in just over
three years,” he said.
Hope said May has been a big
help but says John Dunn has
had the greatest influence on his
career and driving style.
“Having Ricky around is great
and I like discussing things with
him but John is somebody who
gives me advice and is always
happy to answer my questions so
I am very grateful to him.”
BEN WHALLEY is well aware
of Canterbury’s proud legacy as a
speedway riding mecca, and now
the ambitious history-making
teenager is aiming to emulate
icons Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs
and Ronnie Moore.
The 18-year-old apprentice
mechanic matched the fabled
world championship-winning
trio when he won the New
Zealand Solo Champs at West
Melton’s Moore Park Speedway
on Waitangi Weekend.
He even eclipsed them by becoming
the title’s youngest winner
since it was first contested in
1929.
Whalley, who was granted
dispensation to race in the senior
ranks as a 15-year-old, ended
Bradley Wilson-Dean’s quest for
five successive championships by
winning two races of the threerace
finals series.
“I was an underdog so it pretty
unexpected really,” Whalley said.
“I set out with a goal to make
the final and I ended up coming
away on top.”
Napier’s Wilson-Dean was
blighted by mechanical issues in
the finals, assisting Whalley to
60
win the prestigious crown
%
at the
second attempt. Rival Christchurch
riders Andy Aldridge and
George Congreve completed the
podium.
Whalley also won at
West Melton’s dirt oval,
claiming the Ronnie Moore
Memorial while his next
assignment also plays out on his
home track – the South Island
Solo Championships on March
Taking the chequered flag in a
race to honour Moore – the 1954
and 1959 world champion who
died in Christchurch aged 85 in
2018 – again allowed Whalley to
tip his helmet to history.
SMART
INTEGRATIONS
Ideally, Whalley will eventually
check out the factory first
hand, with racing in Europe a
long-term goal.
“When I’ve got my trade
behind me I’ll look at going to
Aussie first . . . try and build a
bit of a name for myself, see how
far I can push it,” said Whalley,
who has three years left as an
apprentice.
“I just want to build my skill
level up. I’m going pretty fast
but the riders overseas are just
insane. They’ve also got so much
more competition, we just don’t
have numbers any more,” he
said.
Supporting the Community
An exciting, new barbecue trailer has recently been designed and built,
with the Selwyn and Waimakariri communities in mind. Mark Terry
previously worked for PGG Wrightson Real Estate, in Blenheim and
relocated to PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Darfield in July 2020. Being
new to the area, the trailer was a brain wave idea, to help locals in our
community and in turn give Mark’s business some profile. He engaged
with close friend, Glen McKay an engineer based in Oxford, to design
and build the trailer. Shortly after starting the process, Mark entered a
business partnership with Karen Hennessy, (who already works in real
estate, with PGG Wrightson Darfield) offering a unique male/female
team approach to real estate, in the Selwyn/Waimakariri districts.
The trailer is available for use to anybody in the Selwyn or Waimakariri
district – including clubs, individuals, companies, field days, shows, sports
events etc. Bookings must be made via Mark or Karen and a small bond will
need to be paid, which will be refunded upon the trailer returning in the
same condition as it was hired. All parties who make use of the trailer are
able to make a donation; any funds accumulated from donations will then
be distributed back into the local community on a regular basis.
To book the Trailer call
BACKYARD CRITTERS
Hemlock-eating moth doing us a service
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other
invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard
at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the
variety of living things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found
at www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyard-biodiversity-bugs-in-my-lincolnsection
THE HEMLOCK moth
(Agonopterix alstroemaricana)
is a native of Europe which has
extensively naturalised North
America, New Zealand and
southern parts of Australia.
It was first found in Central
Otago in large numbers in
1990 and may have been selfintroduced.
As the moth’s name suggests,
the larvae feed on poison hemlock
and gain protection against
predators from ingested toxic
alkaloids.
In late spring to early summer,
larvae are present on hemlock
and roll leaves into protective
tubes. Larvae grow to a maximum
length of about 10mm after
about two weeks. They are light
green in colour with a darker
head capsule.
Red-brown pupae are found
in soil and are 6mm-7mm long.
After two weeks, adults emerge
from pupae to mate. Moths are
pale brown to tan, with a lighter
coloured head and thorax. Their
wingspan is 17mm-19mm and
they have a reddish-brown spot
in the centre of each forewing.
Females lay around 200 small
pale eggs on the underside of
hemlock which hatch about six
days later.
Given the moth is eating
hemlock, we should be thankful
of the ecosystem service it is
providing.
WINE
• By Mark Henderson
I’VE HAD A soft spot for
Hawke’s Bay syrah since
stumbling upon the Stonecroft
cellar door some 30 years ago
and discovering the 1989 syrah:
the inception wine of our
modern syrah category in New
Zealand.
Thirty vintages later, a combination
of vine age, new clonal
material and a wealth of experience
garnered by the winemakers
is seeing some thrilling
offerings.
The vintage of 2018 was warm,
yet not totally trouble-free, but
these labels have risen to the
occasion with wines of depth,
interest and potential.
2018 Smith & Sheth Cru
Heretaunga syrah
Price: $40
Rating: Excellent to outstanding
Fragrant nose, dusty, riverstones,
white pepper,earth/forest
floor, red fruits.
A cool feel, fresh and
vibrant, ripe yet not over-sweet,
with deceptive tannins that build
up.
Garners a silkiness as it opens;
I could plump for northern
Rhone here.
Complex, interesting, lovely
balance, drinking superbly, yet
potential too. Elegant.
2018 Smith & Sheth Cru
Omahu syrah
Price: $60
Rating: Excellent to outstanding
Subtle yet refined nose with
earthy touches and a herbal
influence, gathering florality as it
grows perceptibly. Fruit richness
(blackberry, boysenberry,
raspberry) along with spices,
earthiness and powerful tannins,
crisp, fresh, the fruit hanging in
the mouth.
For now, this is wound up and
tightly structured and all about
the potential.
www.smithandsheth.com
2018 Stonecroft Gimblett
Gravels Reserve syrah
Price: $60
Rating: Excellent
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Rising to the occasion with depth and potential
Boldly fruited nose, a wisp of
brown paper evolves to fruit,
savoury notes and a musk/
dark flowers nuance. Density
to the dark fruits, adding cedar,
savoury notes, spices and black
pepper.
Chewiness as the tannins
build. With aeration, a tight core
of mineral/iron develops as the
wine becomes tightly coiled.
Excellent carry and great
romise.
www.stonecroft.co.nz
2018 Trinity Hill Homage
Price: $150
Rating: Outstanding
Boldly expressive perfume,
shifting to ink, blood, iron, tar
and savoury elements.
Richness yet refinement, lovely
balance, purity of fruit and layers
of flavour.
Powerful yet rounded, ripe
tannins with a long zesty carry
that is almost cleansing.
Approachable, but gas in the
tank for the future.
Wonderful complexity and
poise. Compelling.
www.trinityhill.com
2018 Vidal Legacy
Gimblett Gravels syrah
Price: $79.99
Rating: Excellent
Wild and funky nose, struck
match, earth, growing perfume,
fruit in support.
Juicy and crunchy, bright
acidity lending a zesty tang to
the close.
This grows with aeration, ripe
fruits mixing with toasty and
savoury nuances before growing
tannins add a lightly chewy note
to the close.
Its approachability makes
this easy to overlook yet there’s
deceptive interest here.
www.vidal.co.nz
2018 Elephant Hill Stone
syrah
Price: $120
Rating: Excellent to outstanding
Vibrantly fragrant nose, herbs,
jam/berry compote, raspberry
and spices evolving.
Powerfully fruited palate adds
gravel, tar, charcuterie/savoury
nuances and a little hint of salinity.
This is a bit of a bruiser for
now, lots of complexity but it is
a big, dense wine crying out for
some age.
Time will be a friend
here.
Prize machinery for Kirwee family
Alan Rowlands is a bit like his old
machinery – lucky to be here.
The Kirwee man fell off a six-metre hay
stack a few years ago, breaking his neck,
both wrists and losing a bit of hearing on
one side. “But I’m still there, that’s the
main thing,” he says.
His latest joy is a 1935 McCormick -
Deering No.31-T combine, restored by
his brother Barry and nephew Gareth.
Alan bought the old beauty from Bill
Winter, from over the other side of the
Waimakariri River at Swannanoa.
After seven years of toil to get the
machine back in working order, Barry
and Gareth showed off their beauty at a
Sunday get-together at a Wrightco Farm
in Sheffield.
Word of the Sunday afternoon gettogether
soon spread, as a crowd checked
out a crank-start 1936 McCormick
- Deering WK-40 tractor pulling the
combine. Then, just to show how far
things have come, Case IH’s largest
combine set to work - an Axial Flow 9250.
Alan Rowlands says his son Murray
kicked off his own interest in old
machines, the difference being that Alan
enjoys early models from the 30s while
Murray tends toward the ‘70s and into the
‘80s.
“We had a bit of stuff at home:
McCormick - Deering had a 15-30 15HP
on the drawbar and probably 30HP on
the belt pulley. Then they brought out
one – a 22-36 which had a water venturi
carburettor and three tanks, petrol for
starting & warm up, kerosene for more
efficient operation and water squirted into
the manifold gave the engine extra power.
For 35 years, from the late 70s till a
decade or so ago, Alan worked with the
fire crew at Christchurch Airport and ran
the family farm. Just like farm machinery
some decades before the American
military stationed there also used water
injection system for added engine power
in the aircraft on take-off.
Alan has his doubts how well the system
worked but enjoyed working with those
early machines.
“The 15-30 was just parked out under
the trees at home and Murray said I’d
better get it out because there were a few
shows on at the time.”
One of Alan’s early favourites was a
McCormick - Deering WD-40, the first
wheeled tractor in North America to run
on diesel. It ran a compression ratio of
18:1 and it started on a crank handle.
In an innovation of the day, the WD-
40 was decompressed to 5:1 and started
on petrol, and then after 700 timed
revolutions the engine automatically
switched to diesel operation.
Alan says those quirks were part of the
fun of the machines – and in some cases,
getting them running again. “You learn as
you go. Quite a few people said to me ‘Oh,
you won’t get that old shitter going’.
Well, he admits, there’s nothing like a
challenge.
More flexibility for farming intensity
Intensive farming in Selwyn could be subject to more
flexible rules that remove absolute limits on stock density
and simplify management of air and odour complaints.
Selwyn District Council (SDC) says its proposed
district plan has a more “permissive” approach to the
establishment and expansion of existing intensive farms.
SDC says there is no specific guidance in its draft plan
as to what an appropriate stock density for an intensive
farm should be.
“The potential and actual effects from a farm are more
complex than a simple density figure. Use of a density
figure could lead to farms which are operating well with
little or no effect being targeted by consent requirements
due to an arbitrary density figure.”
On a council Q&A page, SDC says relying on a simple,
catch-all density figure would “expose the council to
being powerless to address a permitted activity causing
significant effects due to their compliance with a stock
density figure. Having ground cover as a qualifier for
whether or not farming of livestock is intensive, gives the
council the ability to manage actual effects.”
Draft changes to the plan define “intensive farming
defined as a commercial activity which predominantly
occurs indoors, or where the stock density or nature of
the activity doesn’t maintain ground cover”.
The definition of ground cover will be assessed “on a
common sense basis,” a council Q&A page says.
The page also notes that the draft National Planning
Standards includes a definition of ‘intensive primary
production’ that SDC may need to adopt in the new
district plan if this term is confirmed in the final set of
National Planning Standards.
SDC accepts that the draft changes for intensive farming
potentially transfer control of air discharges (odour
and dust) resulting from intensive farm to the regional
council. However, the current dual responsibility can
result in costly duplication of process between the district
and regional councils.
This aspect also potentially extends to compliance and
monitoring when considering which council should be
following up on a complaint.
“Currently the district council is passing the majority
of complaints on to the regional council which has the
technical expertise and equipment to assess odour and
dust discharges while the district council doesn’t.”
The proposed changes to the current Selwyn district
plan would still require an intensive farming activity
to have its air discharge assessed by Environment
Canterbury, while other aspects of the farming would be
controlled by permitted development standards in the
plan. If a standard was breached then consent from the
district council would also be required.
At this stage of the District Plan Review SDC is only
considering whether it should change how air discharges
are controlled from intensive farming and other similar
activities that cause dust and odour on a regular basis, for
example quarrying and mushroom farming. The council
would like to hear community views on this.
GARDENING 31
Plant vegetables before winter arrives
MARCH SIGNALS the start of
autumn, which is a great time
for catching up on garden chores
and planning what to grow
before winter arrives.
For vege lovers, if you haven’t
started already, sow your autumn
crops.
Make sure you still have time
to harvest before winter and sow
again every two to three weeks
for an ongoing supply of produce.
Vegetables you can get in the
ground now include beetroot,
broccoli, carrots, cauliflower,
onions and radishes.
You can also sow fennel and
rocket directly in your garden,
and the others in trays for transplanting
mid-April. In warmer
areas, you may still be able to
transplant until mid-May, but no
later.
Before you plant any vegetables
you must prepare the soil. First,
do a general tidy-up and remove
any remains of old summer crops
such as straggly beans, tomatoes
or courgettes.
Dig over the soil and work in
plenty compost. This will add
nutrients back into the soil and
improve drainage.
Even if you don’t plan to grow
vegetables for winter, don’t leave
your beds empty. Sow a green
manure crop to add nutrients to
the soil and protect the beds over
HEALTHY: For a bumper crop of cabbages make sure you prepare the soil well and add
compost.
winter. Lucerne or phacelia will
give your ground a good break
from brassicas. Let the plants
grow then mow the crop down
before flowering — you don’t
want your green manure crop
to go to seed, filling your garden
next year with ‘‘weeds.’’
If the site of your green manure
crop allows it, run your
lawnmower over it, let the plant
matter dry out then hoe it in.
Autumn is also the best time
to sow a new lawn, fertilise or
tackle any lawn problems. This
is because the soil is warm and
there is enough rainfall for even
germination of grass seed. Give
existing lawns a boost by applying
fertiliser from now to late
next month.
For repairs, oversow a bare
patches. Apply a layer of premium
lawn soil over the area and
sprinkle grass seed on it.
Don’t cover seeds with soil, as
the very fine sort do not germinate
well if covered.
If you are planning to add trees
to your garden, planting during
autumn/early winter is ideal so
your tree has enough time to establish
a good root system before
summer.
Before planting, think about
where you want your trees to
go and what you want them
to achieve, ie, provide shelter,
privacy, decoration or fruit. It is
important to select varieties that
suit your climate, especially with
fruit trees.
To plant your new tree, prepare
the site by digging a hole twice as
wide and as deep as the container
it came in. Add generous
amounts of compost to the hole
and mix in well. At this point it’s
also worth adding some biofungicide
granules, which act as a
living barrier around growing
roots and protect against plant
pathogens.
Improve drainage by creating a
mound at the bottom of the hole,
in the middle where the rootball
will sit. Place the plant in the
hole and replace the soil around
the rootball, so it’s compact and
firm.
The ideal tree position is sitting
in the ground, the base of the
stem slightly higher than ground
level. This prevents water pooling
around the trunk and causing
any rots.
Stake the tree for extra support
and apply a layer of garden mulch
around the top, but not touching
the tree trunk and fertilise.
With a bit of planning and
work now, you will have your
garden, lawns and trees sorted
for the winter months.
Plenty of options in funky Yaris
FROM STARLET to Echo to
Yaris, Toyota’s small car range
has been widely accepted in New
Zealand through the years.
I’d have expected nothing less,
each of those models represented
efficiency, practicality and longevity.
Yaris is still around, just recently
a new-generation model
landed in New Zealand and it
also gets a new three-cylinder
engine that is a bit of a departure
for Toyota.
Nevertheless, in the three drives
I had in that model last year it
quickly charmed me with its
honesty and overall performance.
What’s more, there are also
hybrid options in Yaris, Toyota’s
formidable electric drive system
hooked to the three-potter.
Toyota has now gone one step
further, the Yaris is also available
as Yaris Cross, a funkier car that
is also a little larger all round. Notably,
it is also taller, 30mm added
to the ride height. That might not
seem like much, but it does make
a significant difference to those
who aren’t quite so agile, entry
and egress is much easier, and
ground clearance is just that little
bit more user-friendly. With the
extra length there is more space
inside in which to be comfortable.
Interestingly, Toyota claims
the Yaris Cross sits in the sport
utility vehicle category, I’m a little
ambivalent on that, I’m suggesting
it’s more of a crossover model,
that is also represented in the
name.
The Yaris Cross shares much the
same driveline componentry as its
stablemates, there are three models
and, as you would have guessed,
there are two hybrid options. This
is some indication of where Toyota
sees the use of fossil fuel and its
environmental impacts. Never
before have New Zealand buyers
seen such a prolific array of hybrid
options, and full credit to Toyota,
the drivelines fit the concept of
Yaris, in all forms, well.
Prices for the Yaris Cross start
at a tempting $29,990 for the
GX-specification petrol-only
model, an extra $4000 will get
you into a GX hybrid, while the
range-topping Limited hybrid sits
at $38,990.
This evaluation focuses on the
two hybrids, and just like the car
it is based on the hybrid system
is something rather special.
Firstly, I’m sold on three-cylinder
engines, and the torquey characteristics
of it hooked to the
surge you get from electric power
makes the Yaris Cross feel rather
feisty. Acceleration from all areas
is surprisingly swift, it will make
100km/h from a standstill in
11.4sec and will power through a
highway overtake in around 7sec
(80-120km/h).
Toyota claims outputs of 67kW
and 120Nm from the 1490cc
petrol engine, add in an extra
TRENDY: The Yaris Cross sits on the outer periphery of the
sport utility vehicle market.
TOYOTA YARIS CROSS: Hybrid or petrol-only drivelines.
18kW of electric energy and it
all equates to very respectable
figures.
Of course, we all relate to fuel
efficiency when the term hybrid
is used, and Toyota lists the Yaris
Cross hybrid with a 3.8-litre per
100km/h combined cycle average.
That’s pretty much the same as
the standard Yaris at 3.4l/100km
and sits well with the 5l/100km
figure during my time in both
evaluation cars. At 100km/h there
is a 4l/100km return instantaneously.
When I picked up both
vehicles they were full of fuel,
each registering a 500km distance
before refuelling, that’s quite impressive
and I have no doubt that
would be achievable.
Bear in mind that the hybrid
system is working constantly to
prevent the internal combustion
engine firing. Depending on
throttle application and how you
drive, considerable fuel savings
can be made. It’s the best of both
worlds really, fuel saving and
solid boost when acceleration is
required. That’s something that
Toyota has done well with its
hybrid system, and as further
development comes through that
equation will only be increased
in time.
As it is now I find the system
quite remarkable even to the
point where I’ve said many times
before that I’d be tempted into a
• Price – Toyota Yaris Cross
hybrid GX, $33,990;
Limited, $38,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4180mm; width, 1765mm;
height, 1590mm
• Configuration – Threecylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1490cc, 67kW,
120Nm, continuously
variable automatic.
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 11.4sec
• Fuel usage – 3.8l/100km
hybrid, it’s doing just that little
bit for the environment as well as
getting a purposeful drive.
Of course, the energy from
both drive elements is channelled
through a continuously variable
transmission, it offers a seamless
flow of energy and ratio change.
The Yaris Cross is also a decent
type of handler. Sure, with its
extra height there are gravitational
compromises, but the steering and
overall balance is biased towards
dynamic, there is solid steering
feedback and precise corner turnin
even in the base model which
has tyres significantly smaller in
diameter than the Limited.
My testing time in the Limited
was perfect. A blustery nor’west
wind was belting the Canterbury
Plains, it was a good test of
Toyota’s crosswind assist safety
program. It was quite noticeable
in the way it corrected and
adjusted steering to compensate.
That’s just one part of Toyota’s
extensive suite of safety technologies
finding their way across the
whole product range.
Not only are safety features
extensive in the Yaris Cross, well,
the entire Yaris range actually,
there are high levels of specification
for comfort and convenience.
Even in base model form
there is still plenty to satisfy long
after a purchase. What’s more,
the trim materials and cosmetic
detailing is high quality, adding to
the comfort levels.
I’d be happy with the GX model
at $34k, but for those who do step
up to Limited specification it’s nice
to know you get a few extra goodies
such as satellite navigation,
head-up display, cloth and leather
trim with heated front seats.
Toyota hasn’t stopped there
with Yaris and development of
the three-cylinder concept. I’m
due to drive the GR Yaris soon, as
its nomenclature suggests it gets
treatment from Toyota’s performance
arm Gazoo Racing. The
GR gets hefty turbocharged boost
and a whole host of go-faster
goodies. I can’t wait for that drive.
In the interim, I’m also scheduled
into the petrol-only Cross,
I’m sure the entire range is going
to leave a solid impression on me.
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Trident Homes:
you’re in safe hands
Trident Homes have been building houses in Canterbury for seven years
now, with a skilled sales consultant team who design and draw specific
plans, and a further team of builders. Builder Jason McKenzie, with 30
years of experience behind him, leads the way. At Trident Homes you
need to be trade qualified to become a Franchisee which means all the
franchise owners know their stuff. And it’s no surprise that the franchise is
making waves with locals and residents returning home from overseas.
Knowledge and expertise
With experience comes knowledge. The Trident
Homes team know how the building industry
works, and how to create ideal homes for people.
Jason says the team enjoy working with all the
trades involved in their builds, and seeing a home
move from a basic idea, through the design process
and on to a finished build. They ensure everything
is compliant and to code, along with followthrough
on council approvals. He says it can be a
long process, but working a complete package for
clients and seeing their joy as it all comes together
is priceless.
Custom building homes
Trident Homes have built around 250 homes
across Canterbury. They have a range of designs to
choose from, but around 90% of their customers
choose to use those designs as a starting point
for creating their own unique home with custom
changes. The team will walk you through options
to spark ideas for how your home will function,
even using 3D software to really give you a feel for
it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a first-home
buyer trying to stay under the $550k grant cap,
or a seasoned property mogul investing in house
number nine, Trident homes can build for anyone.
Keeping it simple
When you get good service and great product,
most people talk about it. In that department,
Trident Homes are kicking goals—the word-ofmouth
referrals that enquire about building are
strong. They build very good houses and they
back up what they do with high quality after care,
including maintenance and small fixes that come
up. Customers genuinely enjoy the experience and
rate the final product—their homes—highly.
Trident Homes have showhomes open from
12-4pm in Rolleston (36 Lanner Drive) and
Lincoln (158 Southfield Drive) or you can visit
their website for more information:
