SPORT AND CLASSIFIEDS 32 North Canterbury News, March 25, 2021 Finalists decided in tight matches Sefton and Darfield will compete for country cricket’s premiership this weekend after both won enthralling semifinals on Saturday. Two CRV Ambreed Country Premier One Day 2020/21 competition semifinal matches came down to the wire. At Sefton Domain, visiting Ohoka batted first and made 237/7 thanks to half centuries from opener Daniel Lyons (69 runs off 84 balls) and Harry Fitzpatrick (59 off 83). There were afew late lusty blows from Austin Hamilton, whose unbeaten 36 off just 23 balls meant Ohoka went into the change of innings with adecent total and full confidence. Sefton’s run chase was stuttering at 97/4, before Lance Taylor (49 off 84) and Seals club legend Nigel Granger (51 off 47) put their finals hopes back on track. But Ohoka still held the upper hand going into the final overs, with time running help. Enter Tim Muir to the batting crease, whose big hitting turned the match with the flash of his blade. Muir smashed astaggering 42 runs off just 18 balls, including three sixes, to help Sefton snatch asensational twowicket win on the penultimate delivery, stunning ashocked Ohoka, which appeared to have the game in the bag. Sefton will play this weekend’s final against Darfield, which also came out on the right side of a close and quality match against LeestonSouthbridge. Darfield batted first at Leeston Park and, thanks to contributions throughout its order, made 209 in its allotted 45 overs. Half centuries from brothers Harry and Sam Chamberlain set up LeestonSouthbridge, which appeared to be cruising for victory. But when Harry, a Canterbury Aplayer, was trapped lbw by Zak Foulkes, who grabbed four wickets with the ball, the tide started to turn. Ben Chamberlain then took up the challenge, making arunaball 28 before he was out in the 43rd over, still with 21 runs needed for victory. In the end, Leeston Southbridge fell seven runs short, missing out on achance to add the Canterbury Country T20 title to the season’s achievements. Short scoreboards Ohoka 237/7 (D Lyons 69, H Fitzpatrick 59, AHamilton 36no, PMiller 26; MCampbell 2/54) lost to Sefton 238/8 (N Granger 51, L Taylor 49, TMuir 42no, MSmith 27; AHamilton 4/24, RMariu 2/48). Darfield 209 (N Jenkins 45, L Foulkes 40, ACollins 36, R Foulkes 23; DNeal 3/22, DMunro 3/41) beat LeestonSouthbridge 202/9 (H Chamberlain 59, S Chamberlain 53, BChamberlain 28; ZFoulkes 4/26, RHughes 3/36).
