Tell us what initially sparked your passion for the spa and wellness
industry?
I was born and grew up in Boulder, Colorado, an epicenter for healthy
living, with mountain sports and organic and biodynamic food - before
it was common in other areas. I learned at an early age that good food
was good medicine, that yoga could heal the body and meditation
can heal the mind. I had profound effects from different healing art
therapists, and saw that it worked. With this realization, I decided I
wanted to be a part of helping people with this healing, and I became
a therapist with a focus on craniosacral.
Interview with:
Cord Coen
Life was great and I had my plan. With that said, life had a different plan
for me, as it often does! I was involved in a life changing car accident
that left me with debilitating physical and brain injuries that put me into
full-time physical and cognitive rehabilitation. Unfortunately, my body
and mind were not responding the way we had hoped. I remember
the day when the doctors came to my parents and me to share that
they felt like my healing had plateaued, and it was time to switch from
therapy to acceptance. My daily life was shrouded with both chronic
pain and significant brain injury challenges.
From my upbringing, I knew healing was possible in other ways. It
seemed this moment was going to put this belief to the test! My family
and I decided not to accept this as my lot in life. Instead, we looked
for healing elsewhere. We packed my bags and I moved to India where
I spent time in the mountains of Dharamshala, India, working with an
incredible Tibetan medicine doctor. Then, I continued on to the ancient
city of Varanasi, India next to the Ganges River to work with an amazing
man who was a Western doctor, naturopath, herbalist, and a yogi. I
spent my days and nights in an intense healing practice that included
specific yoga practices to heal my body, as well as meditation and
deep breathing to heal my mind, while continuing with the Tibetan
medicine. Slowly, slowly, I started to feel better. At first it was just a
minute of no pain. This grew to 5-minutes, to 30-minutes, then an hour,
to hours. My body and brain started to heal, including parts they said
would never heal. This continued and I got a second chance at life. It
was out of this deep gratitude that the idea of ZENTS was born.
How have your particular strengths led to the success of the brand?
Practicing gratitude is a strength I’ve been developing my whole
life, and it was inspired by a special person - my grandmother. My
grandmother was a very kind, wise, and happy person. She also had
led a very hard life as a child. When I was young, I asked her one day
why she was so happy when so many hard things had happened to
her. She looked at me and smiled with a twinkle in her eye and said,
“Every day I wake up and I choose to be happy. It’s that simple.”
What do you see for the future of your brands?
For both BESPOKE and ANTARA there will be beautiful line extensions
bringing wellness and filling voids in the spa industry. For BESPOKE
we are excited to be launching our minis this year, great for those new
to the line or those who want to explore more of the collection. We
also have new collections in development, but we don’t want to give
away too much yet!
