Southbrook traffic woes tackled<br />

continuing to work on several<br />
proposals relating to<br />
congestion,pedestrian safety,<br />
access to schools, safe areas for<br />
cyclists, provisions for public<br />
transport, and accessto<br />
businesses in Southbrook.<br />
It is estimated that<br />
SouthbrookRoad experiences<br />
more than 26,000 vehicle<br />
movements aday.<br />
Safety improvements are<br />
being developed in<br />
consultation withthe<br />
RangioraAshleyCommunity<br />
Board and Southbrook and<br />
Rangiora New Life schools, as<br />
well as KindercareLearning<br />
Centre.<br />
‘‘It’s abusy arterial road for<br />
Rangiora,’’MsMcBride says.<br />
‘‘We have been workingon<br />
how best to provide safeaccess<br />
to the schoolsfor pedestrians<br />
as well as vehicles, as the Kea<br />
Crossing on Southbrook Road<br />
is beyond optimum capacity.’’<br />
To helpprovide asafer<br />
crossing pointand improve<br />
access from Torlesse Street,<br />
the council has made an<br />
application to the New<br />
ZealandTransport Agency to<br />
help with funding for a<br />

signalised crossing for the<br />
intersection of Southbrook<br />
Road and TorlesseStreet.<br />
This projecthas alsobeen<br />
included in the draft<strong>2021</strong>/31<br />
Long Term Plan (LTP) for<br />
consideration.<br />
‘‘Council will be continuing<br />
its investigations into future<br />
needsfor the corridor and will<br />
be convening areference<br />
group to provide input into the<br />
issues andsolutions for the<br />
wider corridor,’’ Ms McBride<br />
says.<br />
Workiscontinuing to<br />
upgrade Flaxton Road through<br />
the Southbrookindustrial<br />
area, which hasincluded new<br />
kerbing, parking bays,<br />
footpaths and aroundabout.<br />

next month,with final asphalt<br />
sealing expected to be carried<br />
out later in the year.<br />
Other projects proposed in<br />
the LTP include bypasses for<br />
east and west Rangiora, which<br />
are longterm strategies to<br />
reducetrafficcongestion in<br />
Southbrookasthe region’s<br />
populationgrows.<br />

Long hours put in at rockface<br />
Motorists can expect delays as rockfall<br />
workcontinues south of Kaikoura.<br />
Night closures are continuing on State<br />
Highway 1south of the townascrews<br />
continue to work aroundthe clockto<br />
complete rockfall canopywork between<br />
Peketa and theParititahi road tunnels.<br />
The road willbeclosed for short<br />
periods during the day over the next<br />
month.<br />
Short daytimeclosuresofupto30<br />
minutesallow abseilers to workonthe<br />
canopy mesh above the roadway.<br />
Helicopters will also be used to<br />
remove temporaryrockfall meshfrom<br />
the hillside.<br />
Night closures occur from Sunday to<br />
Thursday, althoughcrewswill take a<br />
threedaybreakfrom FridaytoSunday<br />
for Anzac Weekend.<br />
Theywill resumeonMonday from<br />
8pm to 11.30pm, with closures of up to 30<br />
minutesand the usual night closure<br />
from11.30pm.<br />
