Councillor steps down<br />
Hurunui Districtcouncillor Lynda<br />
Murchisonwill resign at the end of the<br />
month.<br />
Ms Murchison says she has been offered<br />
arole which gives her an opportunity to<br />
havea‘‘real influenceinreshaping<br />
environmental management’’.<br />
Cr Murchisonwas elected to represent<br />
the West WardinOctober 2019.<br />
She brought to the council alongstanding<br />
professional backgroundin<br />
environment management and local<br />
government.<br />
“It has been my privilege to serve my<br />
community,’’ she says. She says,<br />
regrettably, she is unable to fulfil her role<br />
as acouncillor and take on her new job.<br />
‘‘I will miss the people, opportunities<br />
and challenges thatare all part of being on<br />
council. Iwillcontinue to service my local<br />
communityinfarmingand environment<br />
issues where Ican,’’ she says.<br />
She acknowledged thesupport of Mayor<br />
Marie Blackand her fellow councillors.<br />

brought asignificantrange of skillsand<br />
knowledgetothe council table.<br />

Concerns have been expressedabout<br />
the lackofcommunity engagement<br />
followingthe announcement of a<br />
proposal foranaquaplay parkin<br />
Kaiapoi.<br />
The KaiapoiTuahiwiCommunity<br />
Board recently approved forpublic<br />
engagement the proposalfor an aqua<br />
playpark in aformerstormwaterlake<br />
in the NCF Reserve near Courtenay<br />
Drive.<br />
The proposal hasbeensubmittedby<br />
Lynda Murchison<br />
considered in her thinking. Iknow she will<br />
bring success to her new employment<br />
opportunity.<br />
‘‘This highly complexcombination of<br />
skills willbemissed by the council team,<br />
but Idowish her all the very best in her<br />
future endeavours.”<br />
Cr Murchison’s resignationwill spark a<br />
byelection,the details of which are being<br />
advertised today.<br />
Educators come together<br />
Local schools have come together to<br />
celebrate anew initiative aimed at<br />
raising Maori educational<br />
achievement.<br />
Principals of Kaiapoi and<br />
surrounding schools and other <strong>North</strong><br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong> educators gathered at<br />
Tuahiwi recently to celebrate the<br />
launch of the revised Ka Hikitia Maori<br />
education strategy.<br />
Tuahiwi School principal Mel Taite<br />
Pitama says Ka Hikitia is aMinistry of<br />
Education (MOE) strategy which aims<br />
‘‘to raise achievement and success for<br />
Maori students and whanau who<br />
continue to be underserved in our<br />
educational community’’.<br />
‘‘This was aspace where hapu, kura<br />
(schools) and MOE came together to<br />
partner in adirection that is about<br />
Maori enjoying educational success<br />
and how we will all work together to<br />
make this happen.’’<br />
The strategy supports schools to do<br />
better and make amuchneeded<br />
improvement for Maori, she says.<br />
The event was opened by Tuahiwi<br />
Education Team representative Nicole<br />
ManawatuBrennan, while MOE<br />
education manager Fuetanoa Kose<br />
Seinafo spoke on behalf of the ministry.<br />
The refreshed Ka Hikitia strategy is<br />
part of a$200m Maori investment package<br />
announced as part of Budget 2020.<br />

Chris Brownsaysthe council is<br />

consultation as soonaspossibleonce<br />
the testresultsare confirmed.<br />
It is hoped the test results will be<br />
returned by theend of themonth.<br />

Random acts of kindness have been<br />
hitting the rightspot in Rangiora.<br />
The Rangiora LionsClub initiative<br />
involves small white cotton bags<br />
containing afew treats and anote on the<br />
outside saying: ‘‘Please take me Iam<br />
free’’.<br />
The bags are beingplacedonrandom<br />
days in highpedestrian areas such as<br />
park seats, bus shelters, the Rangiora<br />
Library and an arcade.<br />
The note also tells the finder to ‘‘please<br />
take this bag and enjoythem,orpass it on<br />
to someone who needs asmile today’’.<br />
One person who found abag posted a<br />
thankyou note on the RangioraLions<br />
Club Facebook page saying: ‘‘Thank you<br />
from apensioner who came acrossone of<br />
these bags in the library.Your random<br />
act of kindness hit just therightspot that<br />
day.’’<br />
An organiser of the initiative, Kirstyn<br />
Barnett, who is aRangioraLions Club<br />
member and Waimakariri District<br />
councillor, says she hopes themystery<br />
bags will bring asmile to afew faces, and<br />
encourage furtherrandom acts of<br />
kindness in the community.<br />
‘‘These days we recognisethat mental<br />
health is as importantasphysical health<br />
for leading ahappy life.<br />
‘‘Events over the pastyear have taxed<br />
many membersofour community with<br />
uncertainty, financial stress and<br />
challenges in their lives, and the<br />
Rangiora Lions Club wanted to help bring<br />
some fun, good news and positivity to our<br />
local community.”
