appointed Hannah Murphy<br />

Buc, MSN, RN, CNE as<br />

the newest member of the<br />

Center.<br />

Hannah Buc has been<br />

recognized because of<br />

her leadership in the<br />

University of <strong>Maryland</strong><br />

Baltimore (UMB) School Hannah Murphy Buc<br />

of Nursing’s Restorative<br />

Justice Interest Group. In addition to serving as a<br />

UMB faculty member, Hannah is a Ph.D. student at<br />

the Catholic University of America.<br />

The MNA Board revived the Center in <strong>2021</strong>, with<br />

Dr. Nayna Philipsen (District Two) and Dr. Jeannie<br />

Seifarth’s (District One) leadership. MNA members<br />

interested in working with the Center are encouraged<br />

to provide a description of their related experience to<br />

the Center by email to jpatterson@marylandrn.org.<br />

<strong>2021</strong> Virtual Educational Summit Summary<br />

The COVID Pandemic forced the “2020 Year of<br />

the <strong>Nurse</strong>” MNA Education Summit: Educating for<br />

the Future of Nursing to be delayed from <strong>April</strong> 2020<br />

to <strong>April</strong> <strong>2021</strong>, during the extended “2020-<strong>2021</strong> Year<br />

of the <strong>Nurse</strong>,” and then became a Virtual Conference.<br />

Dr. Charlotte Wood, MNA President, opened the<br />

Summit. Co-sponsored and organized by Districts<br />

1, 2, and 9, with District 2 President Dr. Nancy<br />

Goldstein’s leadership, the <strong>2021</strong> version kept the<br />

strengths of the 2020 Agenda and added information.<br />

According to a JAMA Open Network study in March,<br />

the new topics were pandemic epidemiology and<br />

nutrition, which became a particular concern in the<br />

pandemic when the average American gained about<br />

two pounds per week.<br />

Invited American Academy of Nursing Living<br />

Legends shared their advice for mentoring future<br />

nurses and building a successful nursing career. The<br />

Legends were Dr. Diane Billings of the University<br />

of Indiana; Dr. Catherine Alicia Georges, former<br />

AARP Board member from Lehman College of<br />

the City University of New York; Dr. Barbara L.<br />

Nichols, the first black ANA president, and now<br />

the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Center for<br />

Nursing; and Dr. Bernardine Lacey, founding Dean of<br />

the Western Michigan University School of Nursing,<br />

former advisor to the US President. Dr. Lacey is also<br />

credited with adding the care of the underserved<br />

to the nursing curriculum, and she was a founding<br />

member of Bowie State University’s successful<br />

pre-licensure nursing program in <strong>Maryland</strong>. Dr.<br />

Bernardine Lacey’s presentation was taken from<br />

an Oral History interview taped in 2020 by the<br />

American Journal of Nursing (AJN) and is available<br />

in full online at journals.lww.com/ajnonline.<br />

A Panel focusing on support for nursing<br />

education funding administered by the <strong>Maryland</strong><br />

Higher Education Commission (MHEC) featured<br />

Dr. Peg Daw, Administrative Coordinator for the<br />

MHEC Nursing Support Programs, Kimberly Ford,<br />

MHEC Grants Specialist, and Dr. Crystal Day-Black<br />

of Coppin State University, who shared a grantee’s<br />

perspective.<br />

A second Panel on “Assessment: Standardized<br />

Testing to Promote Student Success” included<br />

Rick Cooper and Sandy Clark of Allegany College of<br />

<strong>Maryland</strong>, Dr. Jeffrey Willey of Salisbury University,<br />

and Jane Taylor of The Catholic University of<br />

America, all sharing how their programs found Best<br />

Practices to support student success on the licensure<br />

examination.<br />

Karen E. Evans, Executive Director of the<br />

<strong>Maryland</strong> Board of Nursing, described the Board’s<br />

role in assuring safe, quality nursing graduates in<br />

<strong>Maryland</strong>.<br />

Break-out sessions filled the final hours of the<br />

Summit Agenda. These topics and presenters were:<br />
