Board Botschaft: Your Attention Please

by Bill Kruder, Region President

Well let’s see what’s new since last we spoke in January

right after our Founders Day event? Geez, a quarter of

the year has passed already and suffice to say despite

COVID still on our minds we started the new year

quick with members enjoying all we have to offer from

Autocross and DE to Rallies and Tours to Tech Sessions

not to mention our club sponsored coffee meets each

month; Mavs & Mochas and Motoring Mavs at Mayo.

With all this going on have you ever stopped for

a moment and pondered how the heck does this stuff

happen? Is it all just on auto pilot?

Let me tell you we have the best volunteers and Chairs

of any club in the country. We have about 40 members,

your board, that day after day, work behind the scenes

to bring pleasure to the some 2200 primary and 1100

affiliate members nearly 3300 in total.

Ok that’s impressive and like I said we all do this for YOU!

Now I need your help. Our volunteers go to great

lengths to put on our events from a 15 car popcorn rally,

50 person tech session, 100 car tour, and lastly our All

Member Party with nearly 400 members. Some of these

events are free for the club to put on and some have a

cost associated with it. Some you register for and some

you just show up and we love it when you show up.

Here’s the deal. Our NO shows of late can be 20-30%

of expected attendance. This is a two-fold problem.

First, if you don’t show and it’s limited attendance

you prevent someone from enjoying the experience.

Secondly, a great deal of planning goes into these and

when we anticipate 100 people at a venue and only 70

show . . . well you get it.

Maverick of the Month

Selected by Bill Kruder, Region President

So, while we love putting events on, what we need

from you is to merely show up, barring a family

emergency. We love to see you out with us. If your plans

change and you registered for an event, contact us. We

know stuff happens.

Sound like something we can do? I think so! Remember,

what our Maverick volunteers do is for you, our members.

So till Debi and I see you out at the next event…be kind.

Landon, Corbin and Brady Stogner

sponsored by Autobahn Porsche

If like me, you are a regular at our monthly Mavs & Mochas or our annual “big” social

events (All Member Party and Founders Day), odds are you have met this trio.

This month we would like to celebrate our Mavs of the Month, the Stogner Family! Members

since 2016, Landon and his two sons Corbin and Brady are always out and about driving friendships!

There is nothing these three will not do to help. Landon, aka DAD, is of course our Volunteer

Chair helping many of our other board members get the needed help to pull off their respective events.

So, dad is most often seen, orange cones in hand, directing the parking lot traffic.

Then there’s son number one, Corbin, who is right there, donut and coffee drink in hand,

taking and giving orders.

Lastly there is son number two, Brady, who many of you know from his occasional articles

in Slipstream and as our PCA Juniors Ambassador. It was Brady and Corbin who entertained us

all with the Porsche Experience Center and Raceway, with of course plenty of diecast Porsches

to create the fun at our All Member Party in March.

So with heartfelt gratitude we thank the Stogner crew for all they do to make our events run

so smoothly.

Pairing Porsche Performance with

an Electrifying Experience.

Mavs&Mochas: April in Southlake

by Matt Wilson, Mavs & Mochas Co-Chair

You could speculate that if you wanted to order up a

cool Saturday morning, just schedule a Mavs & Mochas

event and it will for sure be unseasonably cool! That was

definitely this Saturday in April when the cool morning

photos by Scott Scheetz

first event, having just picked up his 2021 Boxster Spyder

finished in a beautiful Gentian Blue Metallic - it looked

fantastic! Seeing 4-door Porsches in some non-standard colors

was also cool, like the Carmine Red Macan and a Frozen Blue

The 2021 Porsche Taycan

The Porsche name has always evoked excitement, style, and performance. And now, with

the latest all-electric Taycan, the icon becomes even more electrifying. Porsche’s heritage of

quality, design and engineering has created an electric vehicle with unparalleled acceleration

and efficiency at higher speeds, quick to charge and practical enough to use every day.

temperature was right

at 50, with a brisk wind

making it feel even

cooler. No matter, as

the Maverick faithful

are not afraid of a cool

morning in April! And

faithful they were, as the

cars started appearing

a good bit early before

the “official” start time.

This month the feature

was the 4-door Porsches,

with several (28 to be

exact) Cayennes, Macans, Panamaras, and even a couple

of Taycans making a special appearance.

This is the first time back to Southlake in 15 months,

and there were some cool cars that I had never seen before.

I spoke with one new member who was attending his very

Taycan. I saw in some pictures later that there was a 997 GT2

in attendance as well, but somehow I missed it.

All in all, over 140 Porsches lined the various streets along

the Square, cementing this location as a fan-favorite. Next

time we won’t wait so long to come back!

Let me start with some background. As I started to write my monthly Coffee, Cars & Conversation four

years ago I always tried to mix up who I talk to. A member I met and interviewed was what I was calling a

LEGEND in our club. Fast forward to last year, we decided we needed to celebrate these legends and would

begin doing so at the All Member Party; we inducted 43 members in our first class. Now as we start the new

year, meet our 2021 inductees of the Crest Club.

What qualifies you to be in this exclusive club? First, you have to be an active member with a minimum

of 20 years of membership in the PCA. Second you have to have held an elected Executive Board position

(President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer) or served as Editor. This select group made our club what

it is today! I am just lucky enough as President to be its current caretaker, doing my best to model what these

people did for some 59 years and ensure I continue it moving forward and stronger than ever. The sign of any

great organization or business is just that.

With that being said, I reached out to our Crest Club inductees and asked them to share a moment during

their leadership period.

So I would like to present to you the class of 2021…..

-Bill Kruder, Region President

“If you meet the criteria for the Crest Club and your name is not listed, please contact President@mrpca.org so we can be sure to recognize you.

Rose Gohlke, Treasurer 1992-93

My husband, Mark, and I joined

the club in 1987. What a ride it has

been! Mark is the car nut and if it

wasn’t for him, I would never have

been a member of this club or have

known how much fun it is to drive

a car to the limit. Thinking back to

those early years, I remember the

regions had annual mini-Parades

that included an autocross, rally,

tech quiz, and Concours. Maverick

Region’s was called Round-Up. One

year the rally was a walking rally.

We had a list of clues that had us

looking for answers on the streets

of downtown Fort Worth. A picture

taken of us during that rally ended up

on the cover of Slipstream. And I still have recipes written

on the colored paper pads with the Round-Up logo that

we got in our goodie bags. We attended a few different

mini-Parades in the area, including the Cajun Classique.

Also, during those early years, we tried a few of the other

driving events put on by other Zone 5 regions like Coastal

Bend (Corpus Christi). And I’ll never forget the thrill of

driving Hallett for the first time. What? There are actual

tracks that are not made on parking lots or old airport

runways! Tracks with elevation changes! I was hooked!

(The picture was taken at Founder’s Day ’92, when our

son was only a few weeks old. Being parents for the first

time, the support from club members was amazing!)

Tom Minella, VP 2012

I’ve been an enthusiast and member for as long as I can

remember, dating back to the ‘70s when I drove a ‘72 914.

Then one year Mike Brodigan, past President of Maverick

Region, who knew me from the track, asked me if I would

run for VP along with

John Hamilton for

President, Madhu Rao

as Secretary, and Jim

Falgout as Treasurer.

Mike said it’s no

trouble at all - you are

in charge of insurance

and may step in to lead

a meeting if John is

out. Well let me tell you

there are a lot of insurance waivers to handle.

I think favorite memories from 2012 as VP would be that I

qualified for Blue Solo at an Eagles Canyon DE, and completed

restoration on our ’71 911T Targa.

And lastly went to Parade – I think it was 2012 not sure of

year; may have been 2010 - but got 2nd place in Concours in

our class.

Emily and Hiram Saunders, Editor 1981

So when we moved to Ft. Worth in 1979 we had been

to several Parades, usually with the family and as nonattendees,

because in those days, my limited vacation

time, finances, and Parade activity planning was not

family-friendly. Jumping right in when we arrived here I,

or I should say WE, became Slipstream Editor.

My claim to fame

with that position is due

to Teri Davis. I upgraded

the newsletter enough to

get Teri Davis, a real pro,

to take the job and turn

Slipstream into a REAL

magazine rather than the

budget rag with a decent

cover that I improved

slightly. So I turned my

attention (along with

folks like the Davises,

Steve Kent, Barry Gibbs,

and others) to create the business-like foundation that

allowed a casual club to grow into today’s enterprise.

The most significant part I played was to get Second

Class certification for Slipstream and to manage mailing

for the next umpteen years as we grew from a club with

a membership centroid near what is now AT&T stadium

(well under 1000 members) to a much larger one with a

centroid further East and North.

In the first years, labeling Slipstream issues for mailing

was a family operation. Club growth turned this into the

labeling party, which later happened at Ussery Printing

until mailing became professional. Through that time

I would go to Ussery (frequently with a mailing list

I printed because I was Membership Chair) and then,

late in the evening, I would load my 914 with mail sacks

(trunk, frunk, and ALL passenger space) and take them

to USPS during my lunch break the next day.

Along the way I held a few New Member parties and

Christmas parties (which means Emily hosted after I

volunteered). Emily made mailing labels and typed lists.

Richard Allan Bradley, Editor 2009

It was under Richard’s watch

that the 32-page magazine in

black and white moved to a

color cover in September of ‘09.

We also took second place in the

newsletter Class V and 3rd place

overall. In ‘09 we mailed nearly

1,100 copies each month.

Lastly in 2012 Richard was

awarded the prestigious Betty

Jo Turner Award for newsletter

excellence, top honor in newsletter publication.

Do It Yourself: X73 Suspension Install, Part 2

by Matt Wilson, Coffee Meets Co-chair

photos by Matt Wilson

As a quick recap, I was in the middle of installing

the X73 Sport suspension kit on my 981 Cayman S.

Last month we left off at the point where we had just

lowered the front subframe and removed the front

swaybar out toward the front.

When putting the front end back together the

process is the reverse of removal.

According to the service manual,

it’s important to use new sub-frame

bolts as they are TTY (torque to

yield) with a specific torque setting

with an additional 90 or 180 degree

turn. I also replaced the three 13mm

nuts for the top of the struts mounts

and tried to tighten them in the same

spots as when removed. (These will

get adjusted later when the alignment

gets completed.) All of the needed

bolts are included in the kit.

The rear is pretty much similar to

the front in that you first disconnect

all the electrical bits (pad wear

sensor, wheel speed sensor, and

parking brake servo). Next remove

the caliper, toe drop arm, diagonal

arm from the lower control arm, and

the lower control arm from the subframe. Finally, use

the M9 triple square bit to loosen the axle from the

transmission flange.

You do have to remove a bit of the rear hatch interior

side trim in order to access the 3 upper strut nuts.. two

pieces of trim pull out from each side. Be sure to find

the little clips and plastic cones that may fall off the

trim panel so you can put them back on before you put

the trim back in place. I think these are to help prevent

squeaks when rubbing together. Just like the front, the

whole wheel carrier assembly comes out together and

at this point is where you swap in the new struts. The

rear sway bar is easypeasy

to swap out at

this point; just remove

the two brackets and

be sure to use new

bushings (these come

with the kit.) One

cautionary note: Don’t

use an impact wrench

on the rear eccentric

suspension bolts like

I did – use hand tools

only. I had to replace

one of bolts that got a

bit banged up from my

aggressive approach to

remove it.

Like the front,

installation is the

reverse of removal. The

rear took much less

time than the fronts.

After all this

suspension work, it is

imperative to get an

alignment. I wanted a

slightly more aggressive

than stock alignment

since I was planning

on taking the car to the

track soon. I gave the

specs to my alignment

shop who has done a lot

of Porsche alignments

before. I ended up with

in the front: zero toe,

-1.5Deg camber; Rear: .1Deg toe, -2.0 Camber.

On the road, it feels only slightly stiffer over uneven

roads and surfaces. Ride height looks good with my

20” wheels. I have already signed up for a HPDE day in

a month, so I’m looking forward to how she performs!

Happy wrenching!

The eccentric bolt in the rear suspension. Take the note and

use hand tools to avoid the need to replace when you button

everything back up.

2021 All Member Party Recap

by Debi Kruder, Special Event Chair photos by Michael Durovick, Scott Scheetz, Kendall Awtry and Paul Moseley

The Maverick Region’s much-awaited All Member Party proved to be worth the wait with a record-setting 350+ new

and longtime members joining us on a beautiful blustery day, March 21! As with most things in the last year, we kept

many of our Maverick favorites while

re-imagining how to keep everyone

safe and healthy. One Preston Event

Venues kindly opened up their entire

property to include their beautiful

Carriage House, Chapel, and the

Maverick Marktpreis is proudly sponsored by:

Maverick Marktpreis: Cayman GT4 (981)

by Peter Wen, Region Merchandise Chair

In 2007 Porsche introduced the Cayman, much

to driving enthusiasts’ delight. Essentially a hardtop

Boxster, the Cayman was a true driver’s car. With the

rigidity of its chassis and the ideal engine placement, the

car handled brilliantly. By the time the 2nd gen Cayman

(981) was launched, it was so good, it legitimately

challenged the flagship 911. Then in 2016, Porsche

did the unthinkable. It gifted the Cayman with Gran

Turismo (GT) treatment and a powerful 911 S engine.

The Cayman GT4 was born.

All Porsche GT cars are special. These street legal race

cars have a loyal following. The one-year only, limited

production GT4 is no exception. Since its introduction,

the GT4 routinely sells at a premium above MSRP. With

the then 991.1 GT3 only available in PDK, and the

991.2 911 going all turbo, people speculated the GT4

may be one of the last Porsche models with a proper

6-speed manual and a naturally aspirated engine.

Today, these concerns have largely subsided. Porsche

once again offers GT3 with manual transmissions. The

next gen, 718 Cayman, GT4 is still powered by flat-six

naturally aspirated engines. As the result, the 981-gen

GT4 price has retracted to a more reasonable level. If

you dream of owning a 911-powered, mid-engine,

2-seat sports car, the timing maybe right to check out a

981 GT4.

Excellence’s Porsche Buyer’s Guide offered these price ranges for the

I sure hope you aren’t tired

of this monthly piece because

everyone I do is as good as the next.

You all have such great stories

and this one will not disappoint.

So, if you have never met her, let

me tell you what you probably do

know of her. Joann, along with

photographer Michael Durovick,

took us by storm in 2019. They

took on what I believe was a

first for our club highlighting

fourteen women behind the

wheel with Joann appearing

on the cover in October 2019.

In addition, she is a frequent

Slipstream contributor. Her

work helped inspire our

October 2020 issue where we

devoted the whole magazine

cover to cover to our female

members.

So here is the next in my

series of “conversations”

I would like to share

with you . . . .

Joann Talty, member since 2016

Owner 2011 Boxster

and 2007 Boxster S

Bill Kruder: I think we talked

briefly once that you or your

husband Pat are from Chicago?

Joann Talty: Just me. I grew up

in Illinois. I was born and raised

in Gurnee, located about 60 minutes

northwest of Chicago and best

known for Six Flags Great America,

where I worked in my teens.

BK: So, those that know me, when

someone mentions they are from

Chicago I can’t help myself; that’s

my town. Matter of fact, I have

friends who lived in Gurnee, and I

spent four years working in the JCP

store in Waukegan.

JT: What a small world (smiling). I

attended Warren Township High School

not far from that JCP in Lakehurst Mall.

20 May

Coffee, Cars & Conversation

photos provided by Michael Durovick and Joann Talty

BK: When did you move from there?

JT: When I went off to college.

BK: Let’s talk about college. I think

you have a cosmetology license?

JT: I studied cosmetology during

the afternoons of my junior and

senior high school years. My

parents pushed me towards college,

so when I graduated high school,

Joann Talty, October 2019 cover-girl with her 2011 Boxster

hair license in hand, I went off

to Western Illinois University in

Macomb, but it only lasted two

years. I didn’t return because I

really didn’t know what I wanted

to be when I grew up. I moved

back home, took seven months off

to work in a salon, and I listened

to my dad call me a dropout daily.

Very much into beauty and fashion,

I thought, “maybe I should write

about it rather than get into the

business of selling it.” With that, I

went off to Mizzou, aka University

of Missouri, and received a dual

degree in journalism and fashion

merchandising. You know the

movie, “The Devil Wears Prada?”

I hoped to be the Meryl Streep

character one day. I graduated in

1989, moved back to the Chicago

suburbs, and worked as a graphic

designer realizing those fashion

editor positions don’t fall from the

sky. I moved into the city in 1993

where a fellow employee with

the Sears Tower engineering

firm I worked at encouraged

me to study fashion design.

I then spent two years at the

International Academy of

Merchandising and Design.

This was located right near

the former Marshall Fields on

State. I lived in the city for four

years near Lincoln Park on the

near north side.

BK: Whoa! That’s where I

lived before moving here in ‘94

shortly after you moved to LP.

BK: So when did you move here?

JT: In 1997. I wanted a better

quality of life and better

weather. I looked at Dallas and

Atlanta hoping to find a job

with an apparel manufacturer.

Dallas felt more like Chicago,

so I landed in the Lovers and

Greenville area.

BK: What about a job?

JT: I found that apparel job and wore

so many hats. I began on the cutting

floor, did some pattern making,

ran a cotton shirting program, and

helped design sweaters to go with

their print bottoms. Somedays,

I did customer service, shipping,

and marketed their warehouse

sales. Wanting out of a warehouse

environment after two years, I then

spent six years in advertising.

BK: Tell me how you and Pat met?

JT: We met at a mutual friend’s

wedding. I was dating someone else

at the time, and we were seated at

the same table. Matter of fact, the

bride was trying to set Pat up with

another friend. Four months later,

in the fall of ‘98, I found his email

address in a joke his sister emailed

me. I sent him an email and things

moved along after assuring him I

was no longer dating the other guy.

We dated four years and married in

2002, not just 2002 but 02/02/02

(laughing).

Joann putting in some laps at COTA

BK: Lets switch gears and talk cars,

first car?

JT: Ha! The oldest of four, my

parents bought us the kid’s car

in 1982 - a Chevy Chevette in a

similar color to my current Beast

(laughing). It had some serious

issues; basically, it was a lemon.

Next, we got a Pontiac T1000,

which is the same car. This time,

however, we got a stick. I believe

my dad gave my brother and I a

30-minute manual driving lesson.

Lets’ just say I didn’t drive a stick

again for 30+ years until Pat taught

me again in his 2007 Boxster S.

BK: So why the

Porsche brand today?

JT: Two words – Pat

Talty. Frankly, I was

never much of a car

person. After being

rear-ended in a threecar

accident on my

birthday in 2000,

I underwent spinal

and wrist surgeries.

I didn’t enjoy driving

for a long time after

that, and I admit I’m

an awful passenger.

BK: On a lighter note

what was your first

Porsche?

JT: Well, that’s easy. It’s what we

have today - Pat’s Carmona Red

2007 and my Aqua Blue 2011. I

told our acquisition story in the

August 2018 Slipstream making

fun of myself.

BK: I would say

you have come

a long way since

2000 as I know

you two are often

on the track.

How did this

happen?

JT: Well, thank

you, and yes, we

are. Pat loves his

car and the track.

In 2017, I went

down to MSR to

watch him and

decided I could do

that. Now, we try

to go out with the

HPDE group 2-3

times a season.

BK: So very often about now I ask

my interviewee to tell me something

you do or have done that most

people would not know.

JT: Well, everyone knows I love to

travel. I fell in love with Europe

after my first trip in 2001, a

wedding prerequisite trip to Spain

and France. After

endlessly listening

to Pat’s post-college

European summer

stories, I put together

a solo trip of my

own. For two years,

I saved, researched,

and assembled a

massive spreadsheet

of places to go,

things to see, and

treats to taste. At the

age of 44, I boarded

a jet with a tiny

rolling backpack,

that spreadsheet of

opportunities, a rail

pass, and only one hostel night

booked. While on my adventure, I

realized I DID have a thing for cars

visiting the Porsche and Mercedes

Museums in Stuttgart. In Italy, I

went to Maranello to see Ferrari

and while in Monaco, I toured

Prince Rainier III’s car collection.

I covered 96 cities in 14 countries

during my 98-day trip! Upon my

return, I opened my own salon

studio and discovered a new passion

for travel writing. I published my

first travel book, Souvenir T-Shirts,

in 2012 and have since added four

more to the series.

Whoa…. now this is driving

friendships!

As an addendum… I recently asked

Joann to spearhead a new regular

series called, “Women Behind the

Wheel” which will feature new and

longtime members of all ages – all

with a story to tell. Check out her

first edition on page 24 of this

Slipstream. Thank you, Joann, for

all you do for our club!

Welcome to the latest Slipstream feature, Women Behind

the Wheel. Here, you’ll meet some of the fascinating women

in our club and hear some of their stories. You may meet them

through my eyes, or they may tell their stories themselves. I

might even find a great story outside our group. I hope to reach

a diverse group from the newest member to the most active

friends we think we know. We’ll just see how this goes.

At the March 31 Porsche Patio Pop-up at Taverna Rossa in

Plano, I sat across from a vibrant young redhead named Amber.

This was her very first PCA event since joining in mid-2019.

Austin-born, but calling College Station her home, Carrollton

resident Amber Ray blew my mind with her Porsche ownership,

knowledge, and experience.

Currently driving a Black

2014 981 Cayman with a manual

transmission, this 26-year-old with

a 2020 Physics degree from Texas

A&M currently owns two other

Porsches and has previously owned

three others. And, she works on

them. I’m not talking oil changes

or replacing brakes and rotors. She

rebuilds them. That’s right, Amber

is not only behind the wheel, she’s

under the hood, too, so to speak.

Amber Ray

Women Behind the Wheel: Amber Ray

by Joann Talty

photos provided by Amber Ray

An interest in building things

began for Amber around the

second or third grade when she broke a remote-controlled car.

Amber cites this incident as igniting her interest in electronics.

She took it apart to see how it worked and ended up using

components from it to build a remote-controlled boat. Amber

admits Radio Shack was her favorite store when she was

young. Around sixth grade, she began learning the basics of

programming making simple video games.

Amber developed a habit of salvaging and gathering broken

or unused electronics in a box, something she

does to this day but on another level. “Sometimes

I go to thrift stores and buy cheap electronics

with the sole purpose of salvaging components

within. This is/was a cheap alternative to buying

new individual components, especially items

like motors or batteries. Today, I sometimes

take electronics off industrial equipment I find

at the scrapyard,” said Amber. Working on these

integrated electro-mechanical systems largely

led her to working on Porsches.

But, before diving into car stuff, jump to 2012

when at age 17 her skills grew considerably.

REPLACE WITH: But, before diving into car

stuff, let’s take note of several useful skills she

acquired beginning at age 17. A friend taught her

to weld, and she built a blacksmith’s forge. She

dove into carpentry to make some spare money with contract

home renovation – add plumbing, soldering, painting, drywall

repair, and reflooring to her skill set. Other jobs contributed

to her knowledge too. While working on a farm, a friend

taught her a few machining basics enabling her to get a job

at a local shop for two years. By the end of her employment

there, she was the primary trainer for new machinists and was

responsible for programming the equipment to cut metal. In

college, she became interested in piloting and building FPV

or video-piloted drones, too, often designing, machining, and

3D-printing parts.

I asked Amber to provide more details about a terrifying

story she shared with our group because this incident takes

us from interest to determination. Concerned that something

was up with one of her wheels on her 2002 Toyota Tacoma,

she had it looked at and was told it was fine. As she tells it, it’s

2017, and she’s driving to Houston from College Station one

late afternoon. While doing about 75 mph, the front, right

wheel fails. While the wheel didn’t fall completely off, it laid

almost flat to the road underneath the wheel well once she

safely brought the car to a stop at the top of an overpass.

We laughed when she shared her cartoon-like reaction of

exiting the car, whipping her hat to the ground, cursing, and

stomping all over it. After parting with nearly $500 to have

it towed to a shop and repaired, she knew she never wanted

to be in that situation again, and she’d be doing all future car

maintenance herself.

So, attracted to cars that are responsive and agile, she

headed to a local dealership in 2018 to buy a Mini Cooper she

found in an ad. She passed on it, not wanting an automatic.

Later, she took a ride in an Orient Red Metallic 2003 986

Boxster S and she was hooked. In full working order, she

didn’t do much to this car other than rebuild a sticky throttle

body, perform routine maintenance, and make a few cosmetic

changes. She replaced the stock spoiler with a newer Cayman

style and re-sprayed the body to give it black accents over the

red. Sadly, she totaled it in less than a year escaping injury

while driving it top-down through a barbed-wire fence when

the brakes failed. She investigated the cost of restoring it,

considered buying it back from the insurance company, but

changed her mind and moved on to Porsche number two.

Out of state, she found what was her favorite Porsche for

quite a while: a Rainforest Green 2001 986 Boxster S. Shelling

out $13,000 in late 2018, she had it shipped to her and drove

it for about two years. Maintenance and adding a piece of

vinyl wrap to the shifter for a bit of teal flair was all she did

to this car. Its current owner is her friend, Reagan Hoffman,

another new club member our small group met that night.

Amber follows auctions like Copart unafraid of picking

up salvage cars locally in Texas. She did just that in early

2019 with a front-end collision Black 1999 986 Boxster. She

bought it for $1,200 plus fees, spent about $600 in parts to

restore it, and sold it after having the title re-branded from

salvage to re-built. She described rebuilding the bumper with

fiberglass fabric reinforcement in the back and epoxy filler in

front before sanding and repainting. Using her blacksmithing

hammers, she reshaped the bodywork on the damaged front

trunk. Only the hood and one headlight required replacement.

Next, in mid-2019, came an Arctic Silver 1997 986 Boxster,

now sitting in Amber’s garage as her current project Porsche.

With this one, she learned a flood car can have everything

to nothing wrong with it often depending on whether it was

running or not during the flood. She replaced the immobilizer/

ECU/lock set and removed all the carpet. Costing $800 plus

$200 in auction fees, she paid $500 for parts to get it running.

Currently, she has sold $700 in parts off of it and plans to

modify it as time permits.

From a Facebook ad in late 2019, she spent $8,000 on a fully

functional Sand White 2008 957 Cayenne to tow home future

project cars. To date, she has put plenty of work into it including

rebuilding the transfer box, a feat she is particularly proud of.

Learn more about Amber in the online June Slipstream

as she shares her Cayenne experience. If you are or know

a female Maverick with a story to share, email me at

joannmt@verizon.net with a brief description and her

contact information to hopefully see her in Women Behind

Sixth Annual Easter Gimmick Rally

by Ginger Heuerman, Rally Co-Chair

photos by Ginger Heuerman

It was a crisp and cool morning and we couldn’t have asked

for better weather - with the sun shining it was beautiful. I

don’t know for most of the participants, but for us it was an

hour-long drive to get to the beginning of the rally checkpoint

to meet all of the other participants. In the end we had 13 cars

and 29 people – a good turnout.

The drive itself was beautiful. All the long stretches were

amazing- just lots of green grasses and tons of cows! We had

one member say that that’s what he was going to remember

the most from this rally: the cows. We were first out so as to

get to the destination restaurant and get set up for arrivals.

We had two people following that didn’t have navigators. We

had a wonderful jaunt through the countryside.

When we arrived at Lazy Dog we were a bit earlier than our

appointment time but they were more than accommodating;

they sat us right away and were fabulous. We chatted and waited

for more to show. As

participants started

arriving at different

intervals we started

hearing of heroic

tales of going across

the countryside and

bailing and just

coming straight to

Lazy Dog, along

with other tales of

trips to Oklahoma

and back.

Apparently, there

was an Easter bunny

that ate a direction to

turn right onto FM

902 while delivering

his eggs and made

everyone miss a

turn. Sooooooo we

are happy that most

of the cars showed

up, and we hope

Alan and Gigi Nusbaum

Thane Hayhurst and Rich Meszaros

that the teams that didn’t show up had a fun time hopping

around the countryside. We hope they weren’t too mad.

The only costume award went to Rich Meszaros. Ironically,

he and Thane Hayhurst won second prize for the questions.

First prize went to Alan and Gigi Nusbaum. All in all we

think it went well in spite of the hiccup. We have fixed the

route instructions, should it be used again. We were happy

that everyone came out to have fun. Looking forward to

seeing our participants on the next one. Happy and Safe

Driving until then!

Porsche Racing Series: Introduction

by “Motorsport Mike” O’Hare

I just can’t help it! I’m a fanatic – a motorsport-racing

fanatic. To be more specific: a SPECTATING motorsport

racing fanatic. I enjoy all forms of open-wheel and

performance

sport car racing.

I was obsessed

ever since I

attended my

first Indy 500

in 1980, where

“Lone Star

JR” (Johnny

Rutherford)

drove his Jim Hall “Yellow Submarine” Pennzoil Chaparral

to victory. It was also my passion for performance sport car

racing that attracted me to the Porsche brand as a young

child living in Europe.

Everyone knows Porsche and auto racing have gone hand

in hand for a very long time and needs no introduction!

However, are you aware of the dominance the brand and

its talented drivers achieved (and still achieve) on the

professional circuits? How about the different races, driver

classifications, Porsche models used in each unique series,

or details behind some of the racing results? How about

listening to a professional Porsche driver’s perspective on

the different tracks, cars, rules, competition and close calls?

At this point you might be wondering where all of this

is going. Consider this an introductory story to a series

of articles that will shine a light on professional Porsche

racing for the Maverick Region! Via our new on-line

version of Slipstream I’ll recap select races, take a few deep

dives into various Porsche racecars, the technology, tracks,

and circuit rules.

And even more exciting: we will introduce you to a new

series of “Meet the Driver” interviews that the Maverick

Region will begin hosting, both live and virtual. At this

moment we are diligently working on a lineup of both

current and former drivers who have raced “our” brand to

the limit across circuits in North America and Europe! Be

on the lookout – you may even recognize or know firsthand

a few of these talented and respected racers!

For my next article, I will begin to look into a few of the

race series Porsche participates in, like the newly-formed

(for NA) one-make Porsche Carrera Cup North America

Series, Porsche Sprint Challenge, IMSA Weathertech

Championship, Le Mans, etc. And for those thriving into

the future: Formula E.

Until my next publication – stay safe, have fun and drive on!

Most memorable Maverick or PCA event

There are so so many. The opportunity to be part of the crew on a 935 race team with mostly

Golden Gate Region members from 1978-1979, which gave me the opportunity to attend many

races including Le Mans. Relocating to Maverick Region and being awarded the Richard F. Selcer

Memorial Award for the work we did with putting on the four Green Valley driving events in

1985. The opportunity to work with Bob Manske and other Maverick Region people putting on

the driving event at our 1987 PCA Parade. Every Parade we attended . . .

Best thing about Porsche ownership

What initially brought me to the club was the car and the competition with the car. I love

tinkering on the cars but even more than that it is the people I have met and the friendships I

still have all over the country, after all these years.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor

by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Hello again loyal readers. Today’s article is sponsored

by the letter “F” and the number 1. However since Porsche

isn’t even rumored to be joining F1 until 2025, I have no

compelling reason to start that way, I’ve just always wanted

to. So I get to check another one off the list and I have you to

thank. So, thank you. But, the letter “F” does remind me of

a conversation I had just the other day, and one that seems

to pop up here and there - the Porsche Flash.

We’ve discussed it here before, if you go back in the

annals of Slipstream history, you might remember the Save

the Flash logos, it’s even on the Maverick website. The flash

or the wave has been a tradition since Porsche’s first started

rolling into dealerships in the 50’s. Many marques share

something similar. I know Mini owners and Jeep owners and

most notably Harley owners have their own versions, but

it seems to be slipping a bit in the Porsche circle. It might

be a global phenomena, but since I don’t run with the Jeep

crowd, I don’t really know.

I’ve heard that Porsche sold its soul when it produced

the Cayenne, and many blame the four-doors for the demise

of the “flash”, but I don’t buy it. It wasn’t that long ago that

the Cayman/Boxster were the culprits of ruining the brand.

I don’t think that’s any more true today than it was in 1996

when the Boxster was introduced. Many four-door owners I

know have some pretty serious hardware in the garage for the

weekends, and have you seen Igor Tuladin’s autocross times?

Do you think it’s necessary to know one model from

another to be a Porsche enthusiast? Or maybe you need to

know Porsche’s racing history by heart to be a true believer.

Maybe, but I’d like to give you a new perspective. It’s true

that there are a fair amount of owners that bought their

Porsche for status and not out of passion, no denying that.

Let’s take famous Porsche owner Janis Joplin for example.

She bought her 1965 356 SC in ‘68 because, as she sang “my

friends all drive Porsche’s” and not because she cared one

whit for the motorsport history of the brand. I’d say it got

under her skin though as it became the most well known

car in San Francisco at the time. It was her daily driver too.

I don’t think she ever got that Mercedes she was asking

for. She likely loved the Porsche too much. And last time I

checked her $3500 purchase was worth a fair bit more today.

I don’t think many Macans are going to go up in value

the way some other Porsches will, but they just might ignite

a latent passion and that’s worth celebrating. Hopefully

we’ll see a few more waves and flashes out there, in the

meantime - Enjoy the drive!
